The work and thought of Hugh of Amiens (c. 1085-1164)

Throughout the course a long life in which he served as a cleric, a Cluniac monk, and an archbishop, Hugh of Amiens (c. 1085-1164) wrote a number of works including poems, biblical exegesis, anti-heretical polemics, and one of the early collections of systematic theology. This dissertation aims to provide an intellectual biography of Hugh which grants a better understanding not only of his motivations and ideals, but also some of those of the wider clerical and monastic world of the twelfth century. It examines each of Hugh's theological and literary compositions with their manuscript distribution, chronology, and contemporary setting, giving an in-depth exegesis of the texts including their concerns, sources of material, and their meaning within the context of their day. So too does it compare him with contemporaries who were writing similar works, from the compilers of sentences to biblical versifiers. Many themes surface in this work. One of these is the influence that both the scholastic and the monastic worlds had on Hugh. His writings show that he, along with many of his contemporaries, was secure in drawing inspiration from the contemplative spirit of the cloister as well as the methodical and disputatious endeavours of the schools. Another key theme is the extensive influence of St. Augustine, not just upon Hugh's thought, but also upon the thought of most of Hugh's contemporaries. The role of Hugh's works in the origin of systematic theology also emerges, as does their relation to events in the larger religious, social, and political scene, such as the rise of popular heresies and new religious movements, the condemnation of Gilbert de la Porree (c. 1076-1154), and the schism under Pope Alexander III (c. 1100-81). It concludes that Hugh was not only an intriguing individual, but also a representative of many of the important and widespread trends of his day.

Jonas of Bobbio and the 'Vita Columbani' : sanctity and community in the seventh century

The seventh century was a formative period in the history of western monasticism. It was during this period that a monastic culture became more entrenched on the Continent with the foundation of new monasteries that were more closely tied to royal and aristocratic power. The catalyst behind this development was the Irish abbot and monastic founder, Columbanus (c. 550-615), and his Frankish disciples, the Columbanians. Columbanus’s ascetical exile to the Continent in 590 and his founding of monasteries in the Vosges forests of Burgundy and at Bobbio in Lombard Italy had a deep impact on Frankish and Lombard societies. Luxeuil in Burgundy became the nexus of the Hiberno-Frankish monastic movement in Merovingian Gaul in the years following Columbanus’s death, while Bobbio became an important centre of Catholic orthodoxy and influence in Lombard Italy. This thesis considers our principal source for Columbanus and the Columbanian familia, Jonas of Bobbio’s Vita Columbani abbatis et discipulorumque eius, written between 639 and 642. This is arguably the most important hagiographical work produced in the seventh century and one of the most significant of the early Middle Ages. I propose that the work was principally a Bobbio production meant to re-vindicate Columbanus’s saintly reputation amongst the Frankish communities and to criticize the dissent and disunity that had led to a change in Columbanian practices a decade after the saint’s death. I also consider whether it was addressed to a wider royal and aristocratic audience in Merovingian Gaul and propose new insights into the structure of the work. In addition to a close textual study of the Vita Columbani and Jonas’s other, lesser-known saints’ Lives, the Vita Vedastis and the Vita Iohannis, I explore the career of Jonas himself, seeing him as an individual whose life reflected many of the changing political, cultural, and religious circumstances of his age.

The dissertation is a study of the origins, development and contemporary manifestations of Christian retreats. It traces origins from the Biblical record until current retreats. Christian retreat is a period of withdrawal from usual activities to experience encounter with God through Christian prayer. Jesus' pattern of engagement in ministry and withdrawal is a vital basis for retreat. Other Biblical descriptions of retreat are studied. There is an examination of retreat experiences in Church history with a particular focus on monasticism, as a major expression of retreat life, and Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the modern retreat movement. Varieties of subsequent retreat types in the spiritualities of different traditions from the Protestant Reformation onwards are considered. The spectrum of study includes Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Pentecostal spiritualities. The study culminates in focusing on current Ignatian and other retreats in their many forms. Dante, Historian of Religious Orders

In this study of Dante and the religious orders and institutions of his time, I argue that the poet embeds histories of the religious orders into the Commedia. I demonstrate that Dante’s historical vision, as it pertains to the religious orders, is one of parallel decline, whereby the virtuous intentions of religious institutions are corrupted as time moves forward. By taking Dante’s own historical scheme, which is best articulated through the character of St. Benedict of Nursia in Paradiso 22, I propose a reading of the Commedia that excavates and traces the histories that Dante tells of the papacy, cardinals and bishops, monasticism, and the mendicant fraternal orders. The first chapter identifies the scriptural foundations of apostolic succession as they are articulated in the Commedia, and how the historical tribulations of the early church, especially the Donation of Constantine, is depicted by Dante through his early papal history. The second chapter posits that Dante’s “modern popes” are a useful category for understanding how the papal history of the Commedia intersects with issues of conversion and political theory. My third chapter focuses on Dante’s history of cardinals and bishops and has two goals: to explore the ways in which the twinning of the figures of Peter and Paul create the backbone of the Commedia’s program for apostolic renewal and to examine and historicize Dante’s critiques of the Decretalists. The next chapter, on the history of monasticism, focuses on Benedict of Nursia and the origins of Western monasticism as depicted in the Commedia, the history of monastic reform traced by Dante in his poem, and the ways in which he stages issues of compulsion on the backdrop of religious life. In my fifth and final chapter I turn to Dante’s histories of the mendicant fraternal orders (the Order of Friars Minor and the Order of Preachers) and the lives of their two founders (Francis and Dominic) as told in Paradiso. By tracing the histories of religious orders that are sutured into the fabric of his Commedia, this dissertation proposes a new way of examining Dante’s historical imagination and narrative craft.

My intention is to study not only the historical context, but also the sociological, cultural and political background in France in that period, that drove France to secularization, as a result of the Jules Ferry Laws in 1880. It’s also my intention to highlight the dissolution of religious schools in France and, on the other hand, the possibility of emigration, which consequently brought educational and cultural evolution to the feminine youth in Brazil during the Imperial and Republican periods. Finally, I’ve focused my research in the particular case of the congregation Our Lady of Sion as a paradigmatic example of the sister’s congregations that left France during that period and founded colleges in many cities in the southeast region of Brazil. This analysis shows the pioneering spirit of women from those important missionary congregations / Este trabalho tem por objeto o estudo da correlação entre a situação política da França da Terceira República (1870-1914) e a marginalização das congregações religiosas de ensino, como sendo um fator fundamental para a emigração das religiosas francesas para o Brasil, a partir dos meados do século XIX. Trata-se da investigação do contexto sócio-cultural e político desse período na França, da análise das diversas escolhas das religiosas francesas frente à proibição da atividade pedagógica, como decorrência da aplicação das leis de laicização, a partir das Leis Jules Ferry de 1880. Destaca-se então, num segundo nível de análise, a investigação das escolhas entre o fechamento das escolas, da secularização, ou volta à vida civil, ou então da possibilidade do exílio. A questão do exílio foi salientada, na medida em que, essa opção foi responsável pelas conseqüências mais significativas sobre evolução educacional e cultural da juventude feminina no final do Império e início da República no Brasil. Em um terceiro e último nível de análise, o trabalho concentra-se num estudo da Congregação Notre Dame deSion, como sendo representativa dessas congregações religiosas femininas francesas que para cá vieram e em particular na trajetória histórica do Colégio Sion, tanto na França, quanto em várias cidades do sudeste brasileiro, a partir de 1888. Dabei werden dogmatische Berührungspunkte zu den Vätern der alten Kirche, zur lutherischen, katholischen und orthodoxen Christologie dargestellt und untersucht. Als Basis der systematisch-theologischen Forschungsarbeit dienen die theologischen Studien, Tagebücher und erbaulichen Schriften, die Roger Schutz zwischen 1943 und 2005 geschrieben hat, sowie die liturgischen Hefte und Gebetsbücher von Taizé, die auf ihren christologischen Gehalt untersucht werden. Die poetische Sprache von Frère Roger erfordert eine literarische und theologische Interpretation, die mit zwei Brüdern der Gemeinschaft in Taizé besprochen wurde. Die Entwicklung der christologischen Ansichten von Roger Schutz wird durch alle Phasen seines Lebens hindurch untersucht, sodass am Schluss der Arbeit drei wichtige Thesen dargestellt werden können, die für die Zukunft von Taizé und für die christologische Diskussion im ökumenischen Umfeld interessant sind. / This present dissertation researches the christological key factors in the life and thinking of Frère Roger Schutz of Taizé and shows specific connections to different theological theories. We find several points of reference to the church fathers, the lutheran, catholic and orthodox Christology which are categorized and evaluated. As a base of this systematic research, I use the theological reflections, the diaries and the devotional books which Roger Schutz wrote between 1943 and 2005 as well as the liturgical sheets and prayer books in Taizé center. The poetic language of Frère Roger needs a literally and theological interpretation which I discussed with two Brothers of the community. The development of the christological thinking of Roger Schutz is analysed through all phases of his life, so that at the end of my research I conclude with three final observations which are interesting for the future of the community in Taizé as well as for the christological discussion in the ecumenical context. / Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics / M.
