Text in German / Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht die christologischen Schwerpunkte im Leben und Denken von Frère Roger Schutz von Taizé und zeigt Querverbindungen zu unterschiedlichen theologischen Ansätzen. Dabei werden dogmatische Berührungspunkte zu den Vätern der alten Kirche, zur lutherischen, katholischen und orthodoxen Christologie dargestellt und untersucht. Als Basis der systematisch-theologischen Forschungsarbeit dienen die theologischen Studien, Tagebücher und erbaulichen Schriften, die Roger Schutz zwischen 1943 und 2005 geschrieben hat, sowie die liturgischen Hefte und Gebetsbücher von Taizé, die auf ihren christologischen Gehalt untersucht werden. Die poetische Sprache von Frère Roger erfordert eine literarische und theologische Interpretation, die mit zwei Brüdern der Gemeinschaft in Taizé besprochen wurde. Die Entwicklung der christologischen Ansichten von Roger Schutz wird durch alle Phasen seines Lebens hindurch untersucht, sodass am Schluss der Arbeit drei wichtige Thesen dargestellt werden können, die für die Zukunft von Taizé und für die christologische Diskussion im ökumenischen Umfeld interessant sind. / This present dissertation researches the christological key factors in the life and thinking of Frère Roger Schutz of Taizé and shows specific connections to different theological theories. We find several points of reference to the church fathers, the lutheran, catholic and orthodox Christology which are categorized and evaluated. As a base of this systematic research, I use the theological reflections, the diaries and the devotional books which Roger Schutz wrote between 1943 and 2005 as well as the liturgical sheets and prayer books in Taizé center. The poetic language of Frère Roger needs a literally and theological interpretation which I discussed with two Brothers of the community. The development of the christological thinking of Roger Schutz is analysed through all phases of his life, so that at the end of my research I conclude with three final observations which are interesting for the future of the community in Taizé as well as for the christological discussion in the ecumenical context. / Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics / M. Syftet med studien är att undersöka unga vuxnas förhållande till och sökande efter religion och andlighet i en postmodern europeisk kontext, där kommuniteten Taizé, belägen i Frankrike, tjänar som exempel på ett fenomen. Ett fenomen av andlighet och religion i en postmodern och sekulariserad samtid, vilka tillsynes är väsensskilda. Med hjälp av en fältstudie i Taizé samlades empiri in för att kunna svara på frågorna vad besökare där söker efter, vad som driver dem dit och hur detta är förenligt med deras vardag. Genom kvalitativa intervjuer med sju personer samlades deras berättelser in, och tolkades och analyserades influerade av en narrativ analysmetod. En metodisk ansats vald för att kunna komma åt den personliga upplevelsen och erfarenheten, ett ovanligt perspektiv inom fältet. Genom postmoderna och religionspsykologiska teoretiska perspektiv samt tidigare forskning kring pilgrimsresor, religion och sekularisering i Europa och ungdomars syn på religion i Sverige, förankrades, kontextualiserades och genomlystes de personliga berättelserna. Resultaten visar på en komplex relation mellan sekularisering, postmodernitet och religion – ej uteslutande varandra, utan istället formande nya sätt att tro och utöva religion eller spiritualitet. Studien visar också att det bland informanterna finns ett stort behov av vägledning, trygghet, reflektion samt en plats att mötas och diskutera stora livsfrågor, något som ej premieras i en postmodern kontext och som de saknar i sina dagliga liv.

The narrative research journey and pilgrimage into and epistemological reflection on the relevance of the Benedictine, Franciscan and Taizé monastic-mystic traditions (associative spirituality) for retreat within the Dutch Reformed tradition (disassociate spirituality) began because of a passion for, an interest in retreat and because of lack of research done on the subject. The research developed in story form as a participative active process of story development, interpretation, and reflection in which the researcher and the research subject as valued co-researchers (co-pilgrims) constructed a shared reality and new story together. Consequently, the observations and experiences reflected on may tell just as much about the researcher as about the action of retreat and the research participants. The action of retreat was not approached in a neutral, objective stance but with self-awareness, particular presuppositions, and a postmodern philosophical mindset with ideological-critical, deconstructive and inclusive thought processes. The research problem was viewed as a narrative situation of action, explained by means of empirical research, and interpreted via epistemological reflection and theological theories. The focus has not been on new or adapted theory formulation, hypotheses, or “conclusions” as such but on the empiric interaction between the experiences of Mystery (noumenon), the Jesus narrative, stories of the co-pilgrims, monastic traditions, Dutch Reformed tradition, the researchers’ own story, and those who might read the thesis. A potential amplifying or expanding of the repertoire of existing options and meanings were viewed as a possibility in the creative development of a new reality or research story. The aim was to listen to, understand, and interpret qualitatively the subjective dimension and experience of the reality (story/ies) of retreat as a situation where pilgrims (from different traditions and spiritualities) were in relation with God, self and others. The research journey took me into the life world of the monastic-mystic traditions and my own internal dialectics and story within a Dutch Reformed context. From here arose questions, engagement, and re-engagement with the monastic traditions and a new story. The concern was the beliefs and practices of the retreatants (co pilgrims) under study as beings in real-life human experiential reality, taking seriously their concerns, expressions of belief, practice, perceptions, and stories. The data from the empirical encounter was subsequently investigated, mapped with the major themes and interests highlighted and reflected on in the process. The main themes and focal points that were identified and researched were: -- The lives and stories of St. Benedict, St. Francis, and Br. Roger, their respective communities’ monastic-mystic spirituality, the way these traditions approach retreat and the way they live or express their respective monastic rules or orders in comparison with the Dutch Reformed traditions’ retreat narrative. -- The main elements of Monastic retreat namely silence, solitude, lectio divina in facilitating an awareness of God and the mystery of God as part of the journey to the inner mountain, ever deeper into his presence. -- Different types of retreat and especially the experience of monastic retreat, the experience of holy places (desert spirituality) as places saturated by prayer, Eucharist and the community of pilgrims, and retreat as pilgrimage experience. -- Retreat as ritual following a rite of passage structure of separation, marginality and reincorporation focusing on structure and anti-structure (power of liminality) as helpful tool of analysis and framework for planning of retreat. -- The potential therapeutic or pastoral care qualities of a monastic way of retreat facilitating in pilgrims, life story interpretation and new understanding of stories. Notre thèse est consacrée à l’herméneutique œcuménique du philosophe Paul Ricœur. L’intérêt de Paul Ricœur pour la théologie œcuménique se situe dans le domaine de la réception. L’originalité de la réception œcuménique consiste dans la reconnaissance de l’altérité des autres croyants ou des autres communautés chrétiennes. Ce processus de la réception de l’altérité va au delà de la ratification d’un texte. Pour éclaircir ce processus, nous avons besoin d’un modèle qui, dans un sens œcuménique, explique le rapport entre la reconnaissance interpersonnelle de l’altérité, la réception de textes et le changement d’identité collective. Nous déduisons une telle théorie de la réception amplifiée et nourrie de la philosophie de Paul Ricœur et nous comparons le modèle de Ricœur avec des processus œcuméniques concrets. Nous présentons trois situations du dialogue œcuménique en France et nous sommes en mesure de constater de larges convergences de ces exemples avec l’herméneutique de Ricœur. Au chapitre 6, nous donnons un résumé substantiel de notre thèse en français. / Our dissertation deals with the ecumenical hermeneutics of the French philosopher Paul Ricœur. The interest of his theory for the ecumenical theology lies in the field of the ecumenical reception. What makes the ecumenical reception so specific is the fact, that it requires the acceptation of the otherness – the alterity – of the ecumenical partner. Obviously, this process goes far beyond the ratification of ecumenical documents. In order to clarify the process of reception, we need a hermeneutical model explaining the interrelation of the interpersonal recognition of the otherness, the reception of texts and the change of collective identities. We deduce a complex model of the reception process from the theory of Paul Ricœur and we compare the model of Ricœur with three concrete ecumenical processes in France. As we see, there is a high degree of accordance between these examples and Ricœurs hermeneutics. In chapter 6, we give a summary in French. / Die Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der ökumenischen Hermeneutik des französischen Philosophen Paul Ricœur. Ricœur, dessen ökumenisches Engagement hierzulande weitgehend unbekannt ist, wird in Kapitel 1 als ökumenischer Akteur und Mitinitiator einer ungewöhnlichen ökumenischen Aktion vorgestellt. Anschließend wird in Kapitel 2 ein Überblick zum Stand der Forschung in der Rezeptionsfrage gegeben, der aufzeigt, an welchen Stellen die Hermeneutik Ricœurs bestehenden Theorien etwas hinzufügen könnte. Als Spezifikum der ökumenischen Rezeption gilt die Herausforderung, die Alterität anderskonfessioneller Glaubender oder Gemeinschaften zu rezipieren. Was das im Einzelnen bedeutet, kann nicht durch eine Rezeptionsforschung geklärt werden, die sich nur auf die Ratifikation von ökumenischen Dokumenten konzentriert. In Kapitel 3 wird Ricœurs ökumenische Hermeneutik aus der Fülle seines philosophischen Werks rekonstruiert, wobei neben einigen Beiträgen, in denen Ricœur sich explizit mit dem ökumenischen Dialog auseinandersetzt, seine Schriften zu den Themen Texttheorie, narrative Identität, Übersetzung, Versöhnung, Offenbarung und Anerkennung herangezogen werden. Das sich daraus ergebende Modell der „interkonfessionellen Gastfreundschaft“ stellt die interpersonelle Anerkennung als das entscheidende Moment der ökumenischen Rezeption vor und setzt neue Akzente bezüglich des Rezeptionsverlaufs, des möglichen Identitätswandels von Glaubensgemeinschaften und des Gebrauchs ökumenischer Dokumente. Kapitel 4 geht der Frage nach, ob sich Ricœurs Modell in konkreten Rezeptionssituationen plausibilisieren lässt. Drei Beispiele aus Frankreich (Rezeption der Leuenberger Konkordie, Groupe des Dombes, Communauté de Taizé) werden untersucht, wobei eine weitgehende Übereinstimmung sichtbar wird. In Kapitel 5 werden die Ergebnisse zusammengefasst und es werden Anregungen für eine Ökumenekultur im Anschluss an Ricœurs Hermeneutik gegeben. Kapitel 6 enthält ein ausführliches Resümee der Arbeit auf Französisch. Kapitel 8 liefert den für diese Untersuchung wichtigsten Beitrag von Ricœur zur ökumenischen Hermeneutik erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung.

Questionnaires and qualitative interviews were used for this purpose. The research path has been further shaped by social construction theory as a postmodern approach. This study was born out of my own discovery of the healing qualities of contemplative spirituality and secondly due to the growing demand among Afrikaans speaking reformed believers for exposure to the disciplines of contemplative spirituality. Little research is available on this topic and is it the hope of this research to open new conversations about contemplative spirituality in the Afrikaans reformed tradition. / Practical Theology / M.
