An unjust legacy: A critical study of the political campaigns of William Andrews Clark, 1888-1901.

In a time of laissez-faire government, monopolistic businesses and political debauchery, William Andrews Clark played a significant role in the developing West, achieving financial success rivaling Jay Gould, George Hearst, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan. Clark built railroads, ranches, factories, utilities, and developed timber and water resources, and was internationally known as a capitalist, philanthropist and art collector. Nonetheless, Clark is unjustly remembered for his bitter twelve-year political battle with copper baron Marcus Daly that culminated in a scandalous senatorial election in January 1899. The subsequent investigation was a judicial travesty based on personal hatred and illicit tactics. Clark's political career had national implications and lasting consequences. His enemies shaped his legacy, and for one hundred years historians have unquestioningly accepted it.

Show Me the Way to Go Home

In the following nine linked stories, characters from disparate backgrounds and socio-economic strata converge in a rural community along the Missouri river in central Montana. A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

The Effects of Freshet Turbidity on Selected Aspects of the Biogeochemistry and the Trophic Status of Flathead Lake, Montana U.S.A.

The present study sought to falsify three distinct hypotheses about how the interactions of freshet clay turbidity with Flathead Lake may be affecting its trophic state: 1) that freshet-derived turbidity causes precipitation of organic detritus from the water column by flocculation and/or coagulation of dissolved and colloidal organic carbon and seston; 2) that flocculated clay-organic detritus complexes become increasingly infested with microbial biomass as they sink through the water column; and 3) that primary productivity is reduced and subsequently maintained at low levels throughout the summer and fall because of the phosphorus stripping action of sedimenting clay particles. In addition, this study attempted to firmly document mass balances for some ecologically important elements, nutrient loading rates, steady state nutrient concentrations and annual lake primary productivity. It was also necessary to assess the trophic status of the lake in light of any new findings from this research, especially related to the ecological role of freshet turbidity.

Place Among the Displaced: Envisioning Preservation of a Metis Settlement in Montana

The focus of this study is on the South Fork of the Teton River Canyon Settlement, a previously unevaluated historic settlement associated with the history of the Métis in Montana. The site is located along the South Fork of the Teton River, approximately thirty miles west of Choteau, Montana, and was once occupied by Métis families fleeing persecution for alleged involvement in the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. The study establishes precedent for the site's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and addresses the potential for the site's designation as a Traditional Cultural Property, despite the challenges inherent in such an approach.This study contributes to both existing documentation of the Métis narrative across the state of Montana and to the ongoing discussion among historic preservation professionals concerning the viability and possible revision of National Register Bulletin 38: Guidelines for Evaluating and Documenting Traditional Cultural Properties.

Correlation and Stratigraphic Analysis of the Bakken and Sappington Formations in Montana

The Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian (Late Fammenian-Tournaisian) Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin is one of the largest continuous oil fields in the U.S. The upper and the lower shale members are organic rich source rocks that supplied oil to the middle member, which is reservoir rock. Although the oil-producing Bakken Formation has been intensely studied in the Williston Basin, the lateral relationship between the Bakken Formation and the coeval Sappington Formation in western Montana remains cryptic. This study correlates the Sappington Formation in western Montana with the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin in northeastern Montana. It clarifies the lateral relationship between these two units, and extent of their members across Montana and, the causes of these thickness variations. This study utilized 675 well logs (mostly gamma ray, caliper, sonic, density, neutron, resistivity logs) to make multiple E-W and N-S cross sections and isopach maps. Also, seven outcrops of the Sappington Formation in southwestern Montana and five Bakken Formation cores in the Williston Basin were tied to the subsurface data. Variations in the distribution of the Bakken/Sappington Formation were caused by eustatic changes and local epeirogenic uplifts. The Bakken/Sappington Formation is thickest in the depressions in southwestern and the northeastern Montana, the Central Montana Trough and the Williston Basin in Montana. The Bakken/Sappington Formation is thin coincident with major structural uplifts that were active during the Late Devonian, such as Yellowstone Park Uplift, Bearpaw Anticline, Scapegoat-Bannatyne Anticline and Nesson Anticline. Devonian strata are difficult to identify in the subsurface of south-central Montana making the Bakken/Sappington correlation problematic in this area. The Lower Bakken/Sappington Member thickness is 15 ft (4.6 m) in northeastern and southwestern Montana. The Lower Bakken/Sappington Member is more continuous in western Montana than the other Bakken/Sappington Members. The Middle Bakken/Sappington Member is thickest (~55 ft; 16.7 m) in the northeastern Williston Basin and in the Central Montana Trough (~50 ft; 15.2 m). The Middle Bakken/Sappington Member was less affected by the tectonics and it is present from northwestern to northeastern Montana, except in far northwestern and central Montana. The Upper Bakken Member (~5-15 ft; 1.5 m-4.6 m) is the most continuous unit in the Williston Basin, as the Bakken Members show onlapping relationship that makes the distribution of each younger member greater. However, the Upper Bakken/Sappington Member is absent west of the Central Montana Trough due to basin inversion and it is also absent in far northwestern and central Montana as a result of the erosion or nondeposition caused by the local uplifts. Transgressions were responsible for the deposition of the upper and the lower black shales in offshore marine environments, whereas the Middle Bakken/Sappington Member was deposited during regression and records multiple offshore marine to tidal environments.

Public participation and environmental impact assessment in Romania : the case of Roșia Montana : a call for the institutionalisation of public participation

In this thesis I develop a critical theory of public participation and deliberation in post-communist Romania. Primarily, this theory is developed from a critical assessment of two intermediate-level Romanian institutions: the deliberative system that has formed to debate the authorisation of a proposed gold mining project in Roșia Montana, Romania and the legitimacy claims of the series of hybrid forums that were convened as part of that project's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The hybrid forum legitimacy claims were assessed based on a standard of hybrid forum legitimacy developed in this thesis from deliberative democracy theory and practice. Grounded in new institutionalism theory, this thesis describes the historical and contemporary socio-economic conditions that have shaped Romanian public participation and deliberation.

The Timing and Causes of Illite Formation in the Cretaceous Marias River Shale, Disturbed Belt, Montana

The clay mineralogy data and K-Ar ages of I/S measured in this study agree with previous work conducted within the Disturbed Belt (Hoffman, 1976) and show that diagenetic I/S formed quickly at several different places in response to thrust sheet burial during the Laramide orogeny. The averages of concordant age values for clay sub-fractions separated from three bentonites of Cretaceous and Jurassic depositional age increase from southeast (53.6 Ma) to northwest (56.7 Ma) along the trend of the Disturbed Belt. This northwestward increase of mean ages of I/S is consistent with a thrust sheet emplacement model for the Disturbed Belt (Mudge and Earhart, 1980). The rate of the eastward advancement of the Lewis Thrust Sheet derived from the concordant K-Ar dates of I/S was about 1 cm/year in the Marias River area. The absence of the 2M1 illite polytype in most bentonitic shales does not permit the derivation of the age of diagenetic I/S by Illite Age Analysis and yet constrains the estimate of maximum burial temperature to 250°C.
