Sustainable tourism development: A case study of Bazaruto Island in Inhambane, Mozambique.

Ricardo, Gilberto January 2004 (has links)
Sustainable tourism development strategies are regarded as suitable for developed countries, while pro-poor tourism strategies are seen as suitable approaches for underdeveloped countries. Both approaches stress the importance of local community-based or collaborative tourism management. The goal of these strategies is for local communities to achieve a more equitable share of benefits accruing from tourism development. This study dealt with the problem of which policy changes need to be brought about to ensure sustainable tourism development on Bazaruto Island. From an economic perspective, one would wish to examine the economic returns to tourism, ensuring that as many of the benefits as possible stay within Mozambique while some accrue to local community members. In addition, from an ecological perspective, it would be necessary to ensure that much of the pristine environment is retained. The local community would wish to ensure significant participation in preserving and promoting its culture as part of the development of tourism.

An analysis of military power sharing in Mozambique: a conflict management perspective

Molefhe, Ishmael Rapula Moagi January 2017 (has links)
This study is a conceptual analysis of power-sharing. It applies power-sharing in the context of Mozambique. The study is informed on the premise that components of power sharing contribute to the duration of peace. However, findings from empirical investigations show that certain types of power sharing are associated with more durable peace than others, primarily through their positive effects on governance and public service delivery. The specific objectives of the study were to contextualize the concept of military power sharing arrangement; to explore the challenges faced in implementing the military power sharing arrangement in Mozambique; to explore the strategies used to manage the Mozambique peace process; to ascertain the challenges faced by the BDF during the reintegration standardized training of FRELIMO and RENAMO forces; and to propose recommendations for future interventions. In order to achieve these objectives, the study used a purposive sampling technique to assemble participants that provided useful data for the study. The target population was made up of members of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) who participated in the United Nations Peace Mission in Mozambique dubbed UNOMOZ; and those who conducted the reintegration standardized training of FRELIMO and RENAMO military personnel Thematic analysis of the participants’ responses from the interviews was used to address the objectives of the study. The findings of the study reveal that poorly trained military personnel were a challenge to the implementation of power sharing deal in Mozambique. Also, there was a lack of trust and confidence between constituent parties, and a lack of transitional authority in holding forth power until the power sharing deal was fully implemented. In addition, the study found out that there was the problem of language barrier, and that very little counselling was offered to those who were traumatized by the conflict. Also, there was a kind of unwillingness by civilians to accept former combatants in their midst and a lack of logistics for both the peace keepers and the combatants. Among others, the study recommended that NGOs, civil society organizations, and churches should be more pro-active in engaging the government and not only ensuring that every party involved in the power-sharing deal fulfills its role, but also organizing and carrying out counselling sessions for ex-combatants as part of reintegration process.

Quality service within the context of Mozambique’s developmental objectives and public service reform

Sebastiao, Mario Manuel January 2013 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Magister of Technologiae: PUBLIC MANAGEMENT in the Faculty of BUSINESS at the CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2013 / Investment Promotion Agencies act as economic development conduits which seek not only just to undertake promotion, but also to improve the wider environment for investors by liaising and initiating change. As a result, worldwide governments have set up Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) to advance investment goals and by extension economic development in the context of a dynamic and competitive environment. Yet, little empirical research is done, especially in the developing world with a view to enhance the working practices of IPAs. This study investigated the effectiveness and quality of services provided by Mozambique’s Centre for the Promotion of Investment (CPI) from the perspective of both local and foreign investors. A quantitative approach by way of an online questionnaire was employed in the study. The data generated was analysed with the assistance of a registered statistician. The study found that most of the participants (local and foreign investors in Mozambique) do not make use of the services which the CPI is mandated to offer such as company registration; registration with the Fiscal Department and the publishing of company constitution in the government gazette, to name but a few. Furthermore, investors who have accessed the above services indicated a lack of service quality by the CPI. In the wider environment, the study found areas of concern such as an inadequate accounting system and a lack of proper coordination among the stakeholders involved in the process of setting up a business in Mozambique.

An evaluation of solid waste management with specific reference to the municipality of Maputo City (Mozambique)

Manhica, Elsa Alberto Pondja January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Public Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012. / One of the greatest problems Mozambique is currently facing is the increased involvement of sectors in producing large amounts of solid waste on a daily basis. These sectors are involved in activities that take place in homes, industry, mining, agriculture and commerce. As a result, this problem needs to be treated efficiently by the Municipality of Maputo. Solid waste produced each day in Maputo is not only an aesthetic problem but poses a threat to citizens' health and it damages the environment. With the production of large amounts of waste each day, the Municipality of Maputo is faced with an ineffective solid waste management system. This ineffectiveness is due to a number of reasons, which include lack of resources, inadequate or no staff training, poor management of solid waste by both the municipal and the government, inappropriate laws to regulate solid waste collection, poor control of such laws in terms of removal and disposal of the waste, using past colonial methods for dealing with solid waste and poor community involvement, The problem not only affects the Municipality of Maputo but it also affects both citizens and the environment. Ineffective solid waste management is linked to poor management, lack of resources, poor staff training, and unskilled public officials. The city gets dirtier as the amount of waste increases day by day, due to the fact that citizens living in rural areas have immigrated to the city looking for work after the civil war, which took place between 1977 and 1994. Emerging from a severely damaged war-torn economy, Mozambique is still in the process of reconstituting many of its public institutions. Communities, local government, industry, commerce, civil society, academics and religious organisations can no longer turn a blind eye to poor solid waste management. Instead, they need to join to fight against poor management of solid waste. The current situation demonstrates that too few individuals, non-profit organisations and private companies are involved in solid waste management activities. Effective solid waste management can only be effective if it engages all producers of waste and captures the policy strategies, planning and challenges of sustainable development.

An architectural intervention in Manica, Manica Province, Mozambique : urban renewal strategies addressing the transition from active mining to depleted mines

Saaiman, John Martin 27 January 2014 (has links)
M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) / This dissertation looks at the problems associated with the mining industry and aims to find an architectural solution that is able to plug-in to the scenario in order to improve the current situation in the social realm and that can promote the empowerment of the communities in which mining occurs. The intention is the creation of a local identity In architecture through construction processes and through leaning from the local inhabitants of the place. The design and development of a jewellery school is envisaged as an appropriate intervention with the capacity to facilitate the strengthening of social ties and networks as well as to create a sense of belonging within the community. Important points of departure include: community involvement In the construction of the building; a focus on ergonomic design and attention to detail. The resulting findings were conducted in Manica, Manica Province, Mozambique,a town which is located 20 km from the Mashipanda Border post bordering Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Statistics of extremes with applications to extreme flood heights in the Lower Limpopo River Basin of Mozambique

Maposa, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D. (Statistics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016. / Statistics of extremes has seen much growth both in theory and application since its early theoretical developments almost a century ago in the 1920s and its first major applications to real-life problems pioneered by Emil Gumbel in the early 1940s. Although the theory and applications of extreme value theory (EVT) have been extensively advanced and utilised in most developed countries, intermsofapplicationslittlehasbeendoneinmanydevelopingcountries in Africa despite the abundance of areas of applications and raw data in some ofthesecountries. Inhydrology, thechoiceoffloodfrequencyprobabilitydistributions for a particular site or region remains the subject of ongoing research. The work contained in this thesis is a contribution towards this area and it addresses this problem in one of the developing and economically challenged countries in Africa, Mozambique, in the lower Limpopo River basin (LLRB). The LLRB is a basin characterised by extreme natural hazards, alternating between extreme floods and severe droughts. ThisthesisisbasedonanextensiveapplicationofEVTtoextremefloodheights data in the LLRB of Mozambique at three sites: Chokwe, Combomune and Sicacate hydrometric stations. Two fundamental approaches of EVT, block maxima and peaks-over-threshold (POT), are used in this thesis. Recent theoretical results by Ferreira and de Haan (2015) have shown that despite its inefficiency due to data lost as a result of blocking, the block maxima approach is more efficient in a number of situations than the POT approach, and the two approaches are quite comparable for large sample sizes. A number of ii candidate distributions are investigated for their goodness-of-fit to the annual daily maximum flood heights in a block maxima realisation at each site. The findings reveal that the GEV distribution is the most appropriate distribution to apply in the LLRB and the distribution can be recommended as the likelihood function for regional and spatial extremes flood frequency analysis in the basin. The thesis addresses the issue of cumulative effects on daily flood heights through a comparative analysis of six annual maxima moving sums. The findings demonstrate that the six annual maxima time series models are notsignificantlydifferentbasedonthecharacteristicsconsideredinthisthesis. In an attempt to reduce uncertainties in the estimates, a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach with a conjugate prior and a GEV likelihood function is used to model the tails of the extreme flood heights in the basin. The findings reveal that the addition of prior information in Bayesian MCMC substantially reduces uncertainties in the estimates and improves precision in the predicted extreme floods. The r largest order statistics models developed in this thesis are generally promising and the standard errors of the estimates of the parameters are substantially reduced. In order to account for climate change impact, nonstationary models are considered with the longterm trend and seasonal oscillation index (SOI) (a meteorological variable indicator) as covariates of the parameters of the GEV distribution and the generalised Pareto distribution (GPD). Among the major contributions of this thesis is a proposed procedure for the determination of the 8 days window period used in extracting independent r largest order values within the same year for the r largest order statistics approach. A summary of the key findings and contributions of this thesis are given in Chapter 9. Moreover, contributions by the study topic in each chapter are given at the end of each chapter. / DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoEMaSS) of South Africa

Democracy in practice : exploring parliamentary elections in Mozambique

Aquinaldo, Célio Thomas Samissone Mandlate January 2008 (has links)
The objective of this study is to assess the problems associated with how the people of Mozambique participate in the exercise of political power, through election of parliamentary representatives. This study also aims at suggesting alternatives to improve the system in order to make it more inclusive. Focus is placed on demonstrating how democratic principles may fall short as a result of inadequate electoral standards. To achieve these objectives the study makes a comparative study of the Ghanaian electoral system, for its specific significance in promoting effective and meaningful participation in the exercise of political power. Addresses the following research questions: (1) What features characterise parliamentary elections in Mozambique? (2) What weaknesses are there in the system of parliamentary elections in Mozambique? (3) What consequences arise from such a system? (4) How to improve the system for election of parliament in Mozambique? / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa).
