Calibration study on a prototype of the Muon Telescope Detector at STAR of RHICLi, Liang, master of arts in physics 20 February 2012 (has links)
A prototype of the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) was installed at STAR (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) during run year 2007. While the cosmic and beam tests showed a ~ 60 - 70 ps timing resolution for MTD, the actual performance in Au + Au collisions at STAR was found ~300 ps. In run year 10 STAR implemented a new electronics system for MTD and a cosmic ray trigger to study the performance of its several subsystems. With the cosmic ray data, this study shows that the timing resolution of MTD can reach 99 ps after a full calibration. / text

Cincinnati Electronics (CE) has developed a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS)
Receiver/Transmitter Unit (RTU), specifically for use with launch vehicles. The CE GPS
RTU was flown as an experiment on the Missile Technology Demonstration (MTD)
flight at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). This paper provides an overview of CE’s
GPS RTU and provides the results of CE’s GPS RTU MTD-3 flight performance.

Recently, Handheld devices are more and more popular. Most of them aim at the low price, small size, high computing power, and powerful functionalities. Therefore, the need for embedded operating systems in the market is absolutely vital. There are many embedded systems in the market, but embedded Linux has some advantages to be outstanding and widely accepted. For example, it has no proprietary problem and high portability, and is comparatively easy to be reconstructed and to develop new applications. Best of them all, it is open source software.
Embedded systems are usually diskless systems. In order to keep permanent data in embedded Linux, using flash disk as its disk system is a widely adapted strategy. We use MTD (Memory Technology Devices) system to emulate flash memory as flash disk mounted into Linux virtual file system. This allows accessing flash memory with standard I/O operations without any extra effort. MTD system contains, ¡§user¡¨ and driver¡¨, two different modules. In driver modules, we use CFI (Common Flash Interface) to probe the flash chip and then partition it, while we use MTD BLOCK to emulate the flash partitions as block devices in user modules, and then mount them into Linux¡¦s virtual file system with JFFS2 (Journaling Flash File System version 2) type, which is a file system type specifically designed for flash devices according to the features of flash devices.
The purpose of this thesis is to use MTD system to emulate Am29LV320DB flash chip as a flash disk in embedded Linux running on an ARM-based developing board, SMDK2410, designed by Samsung. I hope this porting can help the development of other advanced applications and provide an empirical platform for the research of embedded systems.

The process of autophagy is defined as the degradation of cellular cytoplasmic constituents via a lysosomal pathway. Herein I sought to examine the regulation of autophagy in the placental pathologies preeclampsia (PE) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). I hypothesized that the Bcl-2 family proteins Mcl-1L and MtdL regulate placental autophagy and contribute towards dysregulated autophagy in PE. My results demonstrate that Mcl-1L acts to repress autophagy via a Beclin 1 interaction, while MtdL induces autophagy when it interacts with Mcl-1L. My data indicate that while autophagy is elevated in PE, a pathology characterized by oxidative stress, it is decreased in IUGR, a hypoxic pathology. Treatment with sodium nitroprusside to mimic PE caused a decrease in Mcl-1L and an increase in MtdL levels in response to oxidative stress, thereby inducing autophagy. Overall, my data provide insight into the molecular mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

Advanced Designs of Cancer Phase I and Phase II Clinical TrialsCui, Ye 13 May 2013 (has links)
The clinical trial is the most import study for the development of successful novel drugs. The aim of this dissertation is to develop innovative statistical methods to overcome the three main obstacles in clinical trials: (1) lengthy trial duration and inaccurate maximum tolerated dose (MTD) in phase I trials; (2) heterogeneity in drug effect when patients are given the same prescription and same dose; and (3) high failure rates of expensive phase III confirmatory trials due to the discrepancy in the endpoints adopted in phase II and III trials. Towards overcoming the first obstacle, we originally develop a hybrid design for the time-to-event dose escalation method with overdose control using a normalized equivalent toxicity score (NETS) system. This hybrid design can substantially reduce sample size, shorten study length, and estimate accurate MTD by employing a parametric model and adaptive Bayesian approach. Toward overcoming the second obstacle, we propose a new approach to incorporate patients’ characteristic using our proposed design in phase I clinical trials which considers the personalized information for patients who participant in the trials. To conquer the third obstacle, we propose a novel two-stage screening design for phase II trials whereby the endpoint of percent change in of tumor size is used in an initial screening to select potentially effective agents within a short time interval followed by a second screening stage where progression free survival is estimated to confirm the efficacy of agents. These research projects will substantially benefit both cancer patients and researchers by improving clinical trial efficiency and reducing cost and trial duration. Moreover, they are of great practical meaning since cancer medicine development is of paramount importance to human health care.

Se caracteriza por su autonomía con respeto a partidos políticos y sindicatos, por su inserción territorial y trabajo de base en los barrios, por el rechazo a las practicas clientelares enraizadas en el conurbano bonaerense, al igual que por modelos de participación y discusión horizontales. Propugnan la necesidad de un cambio social en el que las clases populares son los actores protagonistas del cambio.</p><p>Desde sus orígenes han desarrollado formulas alternativas de organización y un proyecto autogestivo, donde los talleres y micro-emprendimientos autogestionados son su máxima expresión. Este estudio pretende analizar las prácticas colectivas que representan estas experiencias en correlación con procesos de empoderamiento individuales y colectivos.</p><p>Concluimos que la participación en el MTD de Lanús ha fomentado relaciones sociales y vínculos comunitarios. La militancia tiene más herramientas para hacer oír su propia voz, sus demandas y propuestas, y cuentan con mayores recursos para el conocimiento de sus derechos como ciudadanos. Un proceso caracterizado por la dotación de poder de sujetos tradicionalmente excluidos de toda participación social y política.</p>
