Vytvoření metodiky pro tvorbu multimediálních výukových aplikací / Making a methodology for creating multimedia teaching applications

The aim of this thesis is to pass on the specific view on problems of multimedia and e-learning in teaching including making a methodology for creating multimedia teaching application. The methodology will make the work of creating multimedia teaching application easier for the creators (especially teachers). As a component of this thesis is a detailed description of functionality of software Camtasia Studio. This software offers sufficient quantity of functions for creating the multimedia data. This software was used in creating a few sample multimedia applications. This created multimedia applications were tested by students and succeeded. The thesis is concentrated on all teachers and offers them a chance for better teaching. It is not limited for teachers, it also can be used by other people. There are also mentioned problems of compression, codecs and formats, which are related to the subject of this thesis. There is also mentioned a topic concerned with communication, because it is considered as a part of teaching.

"Segmentação automática de tomadas em vídeo" / Shot-boundary detection on video

A área de recuperação de informação baseada em conteúdo visual vem ganhando importância graças ao volume de material visual existente (imagens e vídeo digitais), compartilhado e distribuído principalmente via Internet, e à capacidade de processamento alcançada pelos computadores pessoais na última década. Novas formas de consumo, manipulação e exploração de vídeo digital podem ser criadas através da organização e indexação apropriada desse material. A delimitação de tomadas fornece uma base para a abstração e estruturação de vídeo, agregando quadros contíguos em seqüências de mesmo contexto, isto é, trechos com unidade em termos de tempo e espaço. Nesta dissertação são apresentados os conceitos básicos de delimitação de tomadas e métodos tradicionais utilizados nesse tipo de segmentação, bem como vários resultados experimentais obtidos a partir de seqüências reais de TV. É analisada a distribuição das diferenças entre quadros sucessivos, calculada através de seus histogramas, na tentativa de caracterizar as transições entre tomadas e obter melhores parâmetros para a segmentação. Obtêm-se experimentalmente mais evidências que comprovam a superioridade da medida de intersecção de histogramas sobre outras medidas. A principal contribuição do trabalho consiste no desenvolvimento de um algoritmo baseado no método twin-comparison, que apresenta melhor desempenho que o método original na detecção dos limites de tomadas por utilizar análise local da variação visual entre os quadros do vídeo. / Visual content based information retrieval is an area of increasing importance due to the large volume of available material (digital images and videos), shared and distributed mainly by the internet, and the processing power achieved by personal computer in the last ten years. New ways to consume digital video and to manipulate and explore its visual information can be made by appropriately organizing and indexing this material. The shot boundary detection is a fundamental tool to video abstraction and structuring, combining near frames into sequences with similar context, segments with space and time unity. This work presents the basic concepts about shot boundary detection, traditional methods used and several experimental results obtained from a real TV data set. The distribution of differences of neighboring frames, calculated from histogram comparison, is used to define the transitions between frames and to obtain better parameters for segmentation. Our experimental results show the superiority of the histogram intersection method over other measures. Our main contribution is the development of a new algorithm based on the twin-comparison method, extended with local analysis of visual content variation between video frames. This algorithm was tested over hours of TV data, and performs better than the original method.

Media cues and gender connections: The relations between young children's media use, character familiarity, and gender knowledge

While media have fast become an integral part of young children's daily lives, much remains unknown about how early media use may be influencing learning and development. The current study examined the relations between the amount of time young children spend viewing children's media, character familiarity, and their emerging gender knowledge. References to young children's media use in this report are referring to their viewing of children's shows on television and/or on DVDs. Television/ DVDs remain the predominant way most families view children's shows on a regular basis (Rideout, 2011). In the first phase of the study, parents responded to a survey on children's home media use and familiarity with animated characters. Surveys were distributed through 25 participating child care centers in Massachusetts. Parent survey responses helped determine the media-use measures for the study and the range of characters included in the testing phase with children, between 21 and 43 months (N =169). In phase two, children's character familiarity and gender knowledge of characters, people, and objects were examined through a series of four picture-identification tasks presented on a touchscreen computer monitor. The study revealed that young children are processing gender-based information from the characters they frequently see in children's media. Children with high levels of character familiarity significantly outperformed those with low levels on the gender knowledge of people and characters tasks. Results also found character familiarity to be predictive of children's gender knowledge. Although girls' and boys' overall familiarity with characters was comparable, girls (n = 84) were significantly more familiar with female and other-sex characters than boys. Boys (n = 85) were significantly more familiar with same-sex characters than girls. Another major finding revealed that children's media viewing did not directly contribute to their gender knowledge. However, media viewing was significantly related to and predictive of character familiarity. Together, the main findings provide new information revealing that young children's nascent ability to identify the sexes is mediated by their familiarity with the animated characters they see on screen. The results also reveal the significant contribution of media-based factors in children's gender-knowledge acquisition.

Ta/v\am: Real-time Audio/video Scrubbing Tools for Analysis of Multimedia and G®¡nd

tA/v\Am (the Audio/Video Analysis Machine) is an interactive analysis engine optimized for audio/visual mediums, such as film, video games, and music. I designed tA/v\Am to allow users to pace the playback speed of videos containing sub-title style analytical text, without affecting the pitch content of the audio. The software affords writers the opportunity to display the relevant sensory data (i.e., analytical text and sound/visual media) more efficiently than the paper format. It also serves as a flexible medium; the writer may, for example, compress extensive text into a short amount of time, causing the reader to pause or slow down the rate of the video and thus suspending him/her in the sensorial moment which the writer describes. G®¡ND for Alto Saxophone, Percussion & Electronics is an exploration of the tipping point between signal and noise. Through tablature notation, MIR tools, granular synthesis, and the deconstruction of the saxophone, I have assembled a palette of inordinately contrasting sounds and threaded them together based on action profiles obtained by computer assisted analysis. With them, I have set varying physical conditions of friction that dictates whether the sonic energy is to become focused to one resonant point, or distributed equally/randomly throughout the spectrum as noise. In my critical essay, I use the software to analyze independent video games, showing how tA/v\Am is a highly appropriate tool for such analysis as it is an analogous medium. I then show the software's capabilities as a multimedia platform in analyzing acoustic music, as well as my own electroacoustic work, G®¡ND. In doing so, I advocate for a media-driven analyses, and maintain that one can communicate nuanced ideas using minimal verbal/textual explanation.

The aim of this work is to give information about the structure and elements of the IP Multimedia Subsystem, using signaling protocol and transferring messages between the terminal and elements of IMS. Create model, which implements messages transfer between terminal and IMS elements, by environment tools OPNET Modeler. This work describes system function IMS, its architecture, basic elements, architecture of using signaling protocol SIP and its elements, SIP and SDP messages format and the way of ensuring Quality of Services. There is a project of model terminal registration and reservation data flow by terminal in the IMS. These models were realized in a simulation environment called OPNET Modeler by using tools: project editor, node editor and process editor. In the last part of this work, the method of verification correct function of realized models was created by simulation tools called Debbuger. This tool is one of the environment tools OPNET Modeler.

Untangling the Ecological Knots: Exploring the Creation and Maintenance of Sustainable Technology-Enabled First-Year Composition Programs

In order to avoid repeating the patterns of past failed technology initiatives, eschew various types of paralyzing blame cultures, capitalize on the momentum offered by outside stakeholder interest, and maintain the agency to stay consistent with our own techno-theories and pedagogies, this study develops a model writing program administrators (WPAs) can utilize in order to create sustainable programmatic technology inclusion (SPTI) in their First Year Composition (FYC) programs. In order to achieve this, this study uses a national survey of FYC stakeholders and interviews and focus groups with FYC directors, instructors, and students at three different institutional types to explore the comprehensiveness and usefulness of Dickie Selfe's framework of a three-step process and three additional complications from Sustainable Computer Environments. Using Social Networks for Library Funding Advocacy: A Discourse Analysis of the Save the Miami-Dade Public Libraries Facebook Campaign

In July 2013, the social media Facebook campaign, Save the Miami-Dade Public Libraries (SMDPL) sought to influence the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners to reverse proposed budget cuts and maintain existing library funding levels. In this study, I examined the SMDPL campaign by conducting a discourse analysis of Facebook discussions that included posts, comments and any artifacts referenced such as other websites, mainstream media, public official memoranda and public documents, among others. I examined the expressions of value and the policymaking process using Moore's Creating Public Value Theory. This study found that Creating Public Value offered an examination of public institutions as subsets of public sector governance. The study found that discourse is an element of the public value created that resulted in expression of public value outcomes and operational capacity for communities. However the study also found that public library advocates missed opportunities to demonstrate rather than assert, specific public library values. Information sharing using social network sites can be important sources of what a community values in their libraries and their public sector institutions. Software Engineering has attempted to improve the software development process for over two decades. A primary attempt at this process lies in the arena of measurement. "You can't control what you can't measure" [DEMT82]. This thesis attempts to measure the development of multimedia products. Multimedia languages seem to be the trend of future languages. Problem areas such as Education, Instruction, Training, and Information Systems require that various media allow the achievement of such goals. The first step in this measurement process is the placement of multimedia languages, namely Authorware, in the existing taxonomy of language paradigms. The next step involves the measurement of various distinguishing properties of the language. Finally, the measurement process is selected and evaluated. This evaluation gives insight as to the next step in establishing the goal of control, through measurement, of the multimedia software development process. / Master of Science

DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF AN ADAPTIVE AND STANDARDIZED RTP/RTCP-BASED IDMS SOLUTION

Nowadays, we are witnessing a transition from physical togetherness towards networked togetherness around media content. Novel forms of shared media experiences are gaining momentum, allowing geographically distributed users to concurrently consume the same media content while socially interacting (e.g., via text, audio or video chat). Relevant use cases are, for example, Social TV, networked games and multi-party conferencing. However, realizing enjoyable shared media services faces many challenges. In particular, a key technological enabler is the concurrent synchronization of the media playout across multiple locations, which is known as Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization (IDMS). This PhD thesis presents an inter-operable, adaptive and accurate IDMS solution, based on extending the capabilities of RTP/RTCP standard protocols (RFC 3550). Concretely, two new RTCP messages for IDMS have been defined to carry out the necessary information to achieve IDMS. Such RTCP extensions have been standardized within the IETF, in RFC 7272. In addition, novel standard-compliant Early Event-Driven (EED) RTCP feedback reporting mechanisms have been also designed to enhance the performance in terms of interactivity, flexibility, dynamism and accuracy when performing IDMS. The designed IDMS solution makes use of globally synchronized clocks (e.g., using NTP) and can adopt different (centralized and distributed) architectural schemes to exchange the RTCP messages for IDMS. This allows efficiently providing IDMS in a variety of networked scenarios and applications, with different requirements (e.g., interactivity, scalability, robustness…) and available resources (e.g., bandwidth, latency, multicast support…). Likewise, various monitoring and control algorithms, such as dynamic strategies for selecting the reference timing to synchronize with, and fault tolerance mechanisms, have been added. Moreover, the proposed IDMS solution includes a novel Adaptive Media Playout (AMP) technique, which aims to smoothly adjust the media playout rate, within perceptually tolerable ranges, every time an asynchrony threshold is exceeded. Prototypes of the IDMS solution have been implemented in both a simulation and in real media framework. The evaluation tests prove the consistent behavior and the satisfactory performance of each one of the designed components (e.g.,protocols, architectural schemes, master selection policies, adjustment techniques…). Likewise, comparison results between the different developed alternatives for such components are also provided. In general, the obtained results demonstrate the ability of this RTP/RTCP-based IDMS solution to concurrently and independently maintain an overall synchronization status (within allowable limits) in different logical groups of users, while avoiding annoying playout discontinuities and hardly increasing the computation and traffic load. / Montagut Climent, MA.
