A study of the life history and ecology of Camelobaetidius variabilis was conducted in Honey Creek, OK from February 2003-April 2004. Nymph development was assessed using changes in external morphology. Laboratory reared nymphs were used to calculate number of degree days to complete development (772 degree days at 20.8° C ±.38° C), which was used to determine voltinism. Field collected nymph microhabitat distribution was used in assessing microhabitat distribution. Nymphal thermoregulation was assessed during the winter and spring by comparing nymphal numbers present in shaded and un-shaded habitats. Camelobaetidius variabilis nymphs showed preference for algal microhabitats during the spring and leaf packs in the winter. Nymphs inhabited leaf packs to increase metabolic rate during the winter. Increased temperatures aid in development of nymphs. Camelobaetidius variabilis exhibited a multivoltine life cycle with six overlapping generations.

Peer counseling programs benefit peer-to-peer relationships in schools through students providing active support for one another. Literature shows that peer counseling programs are effective with adolescents, especially in school-based settings. Bowen family systems theory is a model that focuses on the importance of emotional and relationship systems. Differentiation of self, a key concept in Bowen systems theory, is described as the balance between emotional and intellectual functioning; the higher the level of differentiation, the less likely one is to experience emotional and social difficulties. This dissertation I explored the potential for training high school senior counselors from a Bowenian perspective. A project called the Archimedean peer counseling program trained 32 high school senior peer counselors in Bowen family systems theory. This study used a mixed methods approach to understand the following research question: To what extent did participation in the Archimedean peer counseling program increase overall differentiation of self among high school senior counselors, as measured by pre- and posttest scores on the differentiation of self-inventory (DSI), an instrument used to measure fusion between emotional and intellectual functioning. In addition, scores for the DSI subscales (emotional reactivity, taking an I position, reactive distancing, and fusion with parents), and archival quantitative data were examined. Paired samples t-tests were conducted to assess mean differences in baseline and posttest DSI scores. A thematic analysis of qualitative data in the form of student reflection papers, journal entries, and personal communications with school administrators was also conducted. Results from this study help to illustrate the utility of Bowen family systems theory training in the context of an adolescent peer counseling program.

It is known that there are many cardiovascular diseases caused by the alterations in the blood vessels, that affect most of the world population. The knowledge of the mechanobiological behavior of blood vessels is used for understanding how cardiovascular diseases could affect the human body. So, by studying the growth and remodeling (G&R) of the arterial tree, it is possible to predict how these diseases will develop and consequently, how they can be treated or even prevented. The human body naturally tries to find the optimum steady-state by changing either the production of the constituents of the arteries or the flow rate through blood vessels. This effect is the phenomenon that is going to be studied in this thesis and these three main factors have to be taken into account when reproducing the diseases’ effects: the so-called transmural pressure, the blood flow rate, and the biomechanics of the constituents which form the arterial wall. Therefore, through numerical simulations the variation of these factors can be predicted, although always with a reliability supported by experimental data. / Se sabe que hay muchas enfermedades cardiovasculares causadas por alteraciones en los vasos sanguíneos que afectan gran parte de la población mundial. El conocimiento del comportamiento mecanobiológico de los vasos sanguíneos se usa para entender cómo estas enfermedades puede afectar al cuerpo humano. Así, estudiando el crecimiento y desarrollo (G&R) del árbol arterial, es posible predecir cómo estas enfermedades se van a desarrollar y consecuentemente, cómo pueden tratarse o incluso prevenirse. El cuerpo humano tiende a buscar un estado de equilibrio óptimo de forma natural cambiando o bien la producción de los constituyentes de las arterias o bien el flujo de sangre que atraviesa los vasos sanguíneos. Este efecto es el fenómeno que va a ser estudiado en esta tesis y se ha de tener en cuenta tres factores principales cuando se quiere reproducir los efectos de dichas enfermedades: la presión transmural, el flujo de sangre y la biomecánica de los constituyentes que forman la pared arterial. Murray cod Maccullochella peelii peelii is an iconic freshwater angling species that has suffered declines in abundance and is now listed as a nationally vulnerable species. Despite recognition of the need for biological knowledge to provide future management directions, little is known of its ecology. This thesis examines that ecology to provide new knowledge and recommendations for improved conservation management. (For complete abstract open document)

Daar egter die Kaapprovinsie die voorbeeld vir die opvoeding van meisies in Suid-Afrika gestel het, het ek my alleen tot genoemde provinsie bepaal. Die tydperk in die verhandeling omvat strek van ongeveer 1800 tot 1910, omdat in 1804 vir die eerste keer in die Geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika spesiale voorsiening vir die opvoeding van meisies gemaak is. Om die rede het ek my hoofsaaklik bepaal by die wer van Ds. A. Murry en die N. G. Kerk omdat ons e.g. as die baanbreker van gevorderde onderwys vir meisies kan beskou.

This diploma work analyzes the contemporary rise of the number of atheists in the United States of America, basing this presupposition on numerous nation-wide surveys, primarily conducted by Gallup Poll and Pew Research Center. It goes into depth on the definition of atheism and strictly delineates the meaning of this word and the use of its alternatives in the work. Given the fact that the thesis is written by a Czech author, it also provides necessary background covering the differences between Czech atheism and American atheism. Since the work is purposely not one of literary analysis but rather of socio-political and cultural nature, reasons for this decision are given in a separate subchapter analyzing Flannery O'Connor's novel Wise Blood. History of atheism in America is touched upon in the beginning of Chapter 3, but since the fundamental focus of this work is on the contemporary state of affairs, the roots of modern atheism in America are sought after mainly in the twentieth century. Dit is nou ruim 18jaar gelede dat ons ons navorsing oor Andrew Murray se teologie begin het. Gedurende hierdie tyd het ons die werk vir lang tye gestaak omdat ons ingrypende probleme met ons onderwerp gehad het. Dit het hierop neergekom dat ons nie Murray se teologie kon inpas of versoen met die gereformeerde tradisies van die N.G. Kerk nie. Liewer dus as om tot negatiewe resultate te kom, het ons ons versamelde stof en bevindinge altyd weer diep weggebêre. Maar, al het ons dit gedoen, kon ons Andrew Murray nooit heeltemal uit ons gedagtes ban nie. So het met die jare bewustelik en onbewustelik ‘n nuwe en meer ewewigtige benadering tot sy teologie gegroei. Ons het geleer om hom in die raamwerk van sy tyd te plaas wat vanself tot ‘n meer milde oordeel gelei het op die punte waarin ons van hom moes verskil. Dit was tog nie billik gewees nie om hom los te maak van die tye waarin hy geleef het en die teologiese klimaat wat hy geadem het, om hom dan uitsluitlik en streng vanuit calvinisties-gereformeerde oogpunt te beoordeel nie. Through my years of academic preparation, then ministry for the Lord on the mission field and in varied types of Christian service, I read Murray’s books over and over, understanding new sentences which leaped into my spiritual horizon of need. I wrote dozens of poems sparked by phrases from his writings which spoke intensely to my spirit.
