Antonio María Valencia's "Dúo en forma de sonata": An International Approach to Colombian National Music

Villamil Gómez, Diego Esteban 05 1900 (has links)
Antonio María Valencia (1902-1952) was one of the leading Colombian composers, pianists, and educators of his generation. His Dúo en forma de sonata (1926) for violin and piano serves as an early example of the composer's aesthetic. According to the programmatic description he sent to his mother, the Dúo depicts Valencia's "indelible impressions" of his homeland. Through structural and harmonic analysis, I examine the piece in relation to the composer's informal programmatic description. The analysis argues that the work poetically re-creates the landscape of Valencia's birthplace region through an international language, devoid of Colombian folk rhythms and melodies. Valencia proposes a different perspective on Colombian music as an alternative to the use of folk-based music elements that were predominant to Colombian music during his lifetime.

[pt] CONTEXTOS MUSICAIS PARA O ENSINO DA GEOGRAFIA: AS PAISAGENS CULTURAIS NO BRASIL E NOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DA AMÉRICA ATRAVÉS DO SAMBA E DO BLUES / [en] SAMBA AND BLUES AS CULTURAL LANDSCAPES TOOLS IN BRAZIL AND THE UNITED STATES: MUSICAL CONTEXTS FOR TEACHING GEOGRAPHY

UGO PATE MEDEIROS 10 January 2023 (has links)
[en] Geography is important in the formation of citizens and that s why it is a subject present in basic education, where key concepts such as landscape, space, place and territory are worked on. Although the geographic analysis is still largely restricted to the elements of visual perception, there are several other possibilities and didactic gains when using other sensitive manifestations, such as sound. In this context, samba and blues appear as educational sources to supply and problematize various themes relevant to school geographical practice. In this way, teaching the formation processes of both styles in similar time frames (turn from the 19th to the 20th century), but in different spatial frames (Rio de Janeiro and southern United States), keeping the student s attention to sociospatial factors determinants in the formation of each one. From a complex approach to cultural geography and having interdisciplinarity as a pedagogical horizon, the respective Rio de Janeiro and southern landscapes are presented through the influences of sound and musical records, thus proposing other didactic methods for the teaching of geography in basic education.

Corneloup, Bernard 03 December 2012 (has links)
In 1958, a new musical genre appears in Brazil: the Bossa nova, which looks like a revolution in the traditional musical landscape. Twenty years later, 1978 is the year of political openness, Chico Buarque, poet musician who dominated the decade through his songs as well as his resistance against the millitary dictatorship, launches an album on which he records some songs that were censored until then. This event puts an end to a period of great artistic creativity, punctuated with social and cultural changes, statements of intents, ruptures, standpoints on the political or cultural life of the country, which often are one. These twenty years witnessed the appearance of the most striking figures of Brazil’s 20th century music scene, and of the acronym whereby the urban song gained respectability: MPB, initials of Música Popular Brasileira. Rooted in tradition though defending itself from it, exchanging with outside influences which it influences as well, distancing itself till the rupture of the movements of which it was the closest, today this generation seems to us much more united and limited in time than it thought it was. That’s why the time has come, with historical perspective, to look at the musical production of that period with fresh eyes, in order to define the characteristics that unite and distinguish it at the same time.
