Nature is full of mysterious creatures which fascinate and spark imagination. In my final project, What Crawls Beneath, I take a closer look at what drives my interest in creatures that simultaneously attract and repel. Drawing on inspiration from parasites and dinosaurs, I was able to create a piece that represents the danger and beauty that nature so masterfully brings together. The importance of process is discussed as I consider the traditional methods of working with clay and how they affect the outcome of the artwork.

The theses deals with mysterious characters in the period of neoromanticism and expressionism. In its first and second parts specifies the terms of neoromanticism and expressionism. The main part is representation of mysterious characters in literary and visual arts.

De nombreux critiques se sont penchés sur le caractère fantastique des romans d’Iris Murdoch, d’autres ont évoqué la notion du bien. Nous avons voulu dans cet écrit mettre en relation les deux notions et montrer qu’à travers le fantastique Iris Murdoch conduit son lecteur sur le chemin du bien dans cinq romans : The Bell, A Severed Head, The Italian Girl, Bruno’s Dream et Jackson’s Dilemma. Dans une première partie, après avoir proposé quelques définitions du fantastique, nous avons relevé dans le texte murdochien tous les éléments qui nous permettent de lui apposer cette étiquette. Par l’étude de l’illusion d’optique, nous avons pu confirmer que le fantastique prend sa source dans une fissure du réel et fait sourdre un monde où règnent peur, doute, rêve et folie. Nous avons, par la suite, analysé les symboles spécifiques du genre. Dans une deuxième partie nous avons examiné le rôle du lecteur dans les écrits de la romancière et tenté de comprendre en quoi la notion de fantastique pouvait influencer le sens de sa lecture. Dans une dernière partie nous avons établi qu’Iris Murdoch s’appuie sur l’aspect fantastique et inexplicable de la nature humaine pour orienter son lecteur vers le chemin du bien. La contingence à laquelle Iris Murdoch est particulièrement attachée, c’est-à-dire l’acceptation que tout ne peut être maîtrisé, force le lecteur à reconnaître que son destin lui échappe. Dès lors il lui est possible de lâcher prise et de ne plus mettre en avant un ego aveuglant. Il devient un homme humble capable d’un amour altruiste qui l’entraîne vers le bien où se réunissent la mort, l’amour et la littérature. / A number of reviewers have dealt with the fantastic character of Iris Murdoch’s novels, others have mentioned the Good. In this study we have aimed at linking both notions to show, in five of her novels: A Severed Head, The Bell, The Italian Girl, Bruno’s Dream and Jackson’s Dilemma, that through the ‘Fantastic’ Iris Murdoch leads her reader on the way to the “Good”.In the first part, after giving a definition of the word ‘fantastic’ we have selected all the elements that point towards the fantastic features in Iris Murdoch’s writings. Starting with the optical illusion, we have shown that the ‘Fantastic’ originates from a break in reality which gives birth to fear, doubt, dream and madness. We have then analyzed the symbols that characterize the genre. In the second part, we have examined the role of the reader in Iris Murdoch’s novels and we have tried to understand in what way the ‘Fantastic’ could influence readers. In the last part we have shown that Iris Murdoch relies on the “Fantastic” and the unexplainable aspect of human beings to lead her reader on the way to the “Good”. Contingency- that is admitting that not everything can have an explanation- which Iris Murdoch sees as of paramount importance, forces the reader to realize that he cannot master his destiny. Therefore the reader cannot do anything other than let go and stop putting forward a blind ego. He or she then becomes a humble man, able to feel an altruistic love that will take him or her on the way to the Good in which death, love and literature are connected.

Explore pictures of supernatural beings and other creatures which could be found in current visualizations of Fantasy genres, computer games, illustrations and films. Study and categorize visual and written materials, follow these fantastic creatures, how they look like and how the appearance of them changes through time. Track the source of the appearance by comparing modern sources and older pictures and also by studying old myths and legends. Research what inspiration how impacted the process of creating new concepts. Study and define terms such as imagination and fantasy. Through scientific research, try to map how the children imagine fantastic creatures and from what pictures and text their images come from. What do children find scary? La notion de métafiction, concept de la critique littéraire contemporaine, caractérise ces fictions qui subvertissent les catégories conventionnelles romanesques, et invitent à une aventure sémiologique. Nos recherches nous amènent à proposer la notion de métafiction comme méthode d'investigation du tissu textuel des romans du corpus. Elle interroge la fabula et révèle, dans l'entrelacs des matériaux narratifs, la bibliothèque qui dialogue avec elle, déterminée par le contexte historique d'une époque. L'historiographie agit comme un medium du métatexte et génère un système sémiotique représentable par « un labyrinthe de nœuds interconnectés » : une « sémiosphère », terme que nous empruntons à Lotman. Le parcours intertextuel propose une lecture à plusieurs niveaux et invite à revisiter ironiquement l'Histoire et ses impostures. L'écriture « baroque » d'Umberto Eco les livre généreusement à la sagacité critique d'un Lecteur Modèle, finalement confronté aux dimensions ontologiques de l'œuvre. / The notion of metafiction, concept taken from contemporary critics of litterature, defines these fictions subverting conventional categories of novels and invites the reader to a semiologic adventure. Our researches lead us to make the proposition of metafiction as an investigation method to explore the textual network of the novels in our corpus. It questions fabula in order to disclose, in the tracery of narrative materials, the library dialoguing with it, in the historical context of a period. Historiography acts as a medium for the meta-text and generates a semiotic system one can depict under the shape of a labyrinth made of interconnected nodes : a « semiosphere », as defined by Lotman. The intertextual journey offers a multi-levels reading and invites to re-visit, with irony, History and its impostures. The Umberto ECO's « baroque » writing brings them with generosity to the critic acumen of the « Model Reader », eventually confronted to ontological dimensions of the work.

Cette étude propose l’analyse de représentations queer dans le cinéma des années 2000. Plus précisément, elle porte sur la façon dont l’abus sexuel au masculin est représenté dans deux films produits en 2004, soit La mauvaise éducation (La mala educación), du réalisateur espagnol Pedro Almodovar, et Mysterious Skin, du réalisateur étatsunien Gregg Araki. À l’aide de la réflexion contenue dans Ça arrive aussi aux garçons : l’abus sexuel au masculin du sociologue Michel Dorais, l’objectif vise à démontrer comment cet événement traumatique influence de manière significative la construction identitaire et sexuelle des personnages principaux. De manière plus générale, ce mémoire positionne ces deux réalisateurs dans la grande et riche lignée du cinéma queer, qui met en scène des désirs hors norme et des identités sexuelles alternatives. Le premier chapitre porte sur les théories queer et ses diverses manifestations au grand écran. Il permet par la suite de réunir Almódovar et Araki dans une même étude et de souligner la pertinence de cette réunion. Le deuxième chapitre s’intéresse, à l’aide d’analyses d’extraits significatifs des films, à la façon dont chacun met en scène l’abus sexuel au masculin et comment cet événement se présente dans la vie des protagonistes. Le dernier chapitre se penche sur la construction identitaire et sexuelle des personnages principaux, afin de mieux comprendre l’incidence de l’abus sexuel. Jumelée aux travaux de Judith Butler, l’approche queer sera donc mise de l’avant dans cette étude qui se montre d’emblée attentive, d’un point de vue cinématographique, aux notions de sexe, de genre et de désir, et ce, à travers l’analyse de plusieurs extraits filmiques et d’éléments à la fois narratifs et structurels particulièrement significatifs quant à la représentation de l’abus sexuel au masculin. / This study proposes to analyze queer cinema representations in the 2000s. It focuses on how the male sexual abuse is shown in two films released in 2004, Bad Education (La mala educación), from the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, and Mysterious Skin, from the American director Gregg Araki. Applying ideas from sociologist Michel Dorais, in his 1997 book, Ça arrive aussi aux garçons: l’abus sexuel au masculin, we aim to show how this event significantly influences the identity and the sexual construction of the films’ main characters. More generally, this study places these two directors in the large and rich tradition of queer cinema, which focuses on unconventional desires and sexual identities. The first chapter deals specifically with queer theory main ideas and its various manifestations in cinema, which allows us to bring Almodóvar and Araki together in one study and to emphasize the relevance of this reunion. The second chapter focuses on significant scenes from the movies that show how each director presents male sexual abuse and how this event reflects on the lives of the protagonists. Finally, the last chapter analyses problems of identity and sexual construction in the main characters, to see how sexual abuse has affected them. Coupled with the work of Judith Butler, the queer approach in film studies is therefore adapted in this thesis, in order to emphasize the importance of concepts like genre, sexuality, and the manifestations of desire through the analysis of several scenes from the corpus. Therefore, particularly significant narrative and structural elements, as regards to the representation of male sexual abuse in cinema, will be studied
