Dogliotti, Rosa-Luisa Amalia 31 December 2005 (has links)
This study examines the literary texts of the Ligurian writer Giuseppe Conte published between 1972 and 2005. In Part One, the reasons are considered which justify this research on Giuseppe Conte. This author is discussed in the context of the literary movements of the second half of the 20th century in Italy, with special reference to his approach to literature, which proposes a modern rewriting of myth. Conte is in fact a co-founder of "Mitomodernismo". "Mitomodernismo" is a literary movement, established in 1994 and currently still active, which aims to revive modern society through a spiritual rebirth promoted by a recovery of basic human values, as these appear within the boundaries already suggested by myth since antiquity. The Mitomodernisti propose an alternative which could assist contemporaries to overcome the obstacles created by modern "maladies", particularly in the West, whether these be socio-cultural, ecological, or religious. Throughout Conte's entire æuvre one clearly perceives this strong desire for rebirth which for the author is concretised in "Fare Anima", that is, a way to reconnecting with the universe, of rising towards the "light". This tension towards rebirth could be compared metaphorically to the quest for the Graal, which involves suffering as a way to redemption. The artist's visionary work is comparable to the extrasensory journey undertaken by the shaman during his trance. For this reason, in Part One of this study the figure of the shaman will also be examined in a socio-cultural context, in order to transfer it better to the literary context. The whole of Part Two is dedicated to an analysis of Conte's æuvre - poetry, novels and also, but only indirectly, essays and articles - in the light of his fundamental themes, which metaphorically turn the writer into a "shaman". The analysis is based on some concepts put forward by the Swiss psycho-analyst Carl Gustav Jung, such as the function and symbolism of myth in literature from a psychoanalytical perspective. / Classics and Mod Euro Lang / D. Mito, lenda e história em Matrinchã do Teles Pires: a construção do terreno ficcional

The analysis exercise concerning the novel Mantrinchã do Teles Pires tends to emerge the literary aspects which constitute in the thematic construction of the myth research, in the legend recreation of the prophet João Maria and in the re-reading of historical happenings. The reading course and the sense production go through the three main elements: the mythical, the legendary and the historical, analysing them to recognize, in its interior, the coherence in the aesthetic set of procedures that assure it the fiction character. The mythical aspect retakes, in a parody way, the plot of Exodus Book and manifests in the crossing of thousands of Brazilians who left their lands and tradition to go through their dream: the promised land. The prophet legend reconstructs from versions that extend in several spaces, from Sorocaba, São Paulo, passing by Contestado conflict and recreating itself in Eleutério, the main character of the book. A hiker who assumes the messianic character after his historical idol death, Getúlio Vargas, and doubles the first monk action in the lands of Mato Grosso. The historical factor presence in the narrative fixes itself in the rescue of Vargas Era and of national expansion projects which will trigger off the migratory movement to the North of the state of Mato Grosso. For the study development of these points in the structure composition we will use specific theories and bibliographies. Afterwards, we will consider the narrative basis to the narrator constitution, the main point of this research, which works as the catalyst element between the other categories like time, space, plot and characters. All these fragments are cemented on the fictional mosaic by subtle irony and by plurality of voices which give to the work a post-modern profile.

A tese aponta Cyro dos Anjos como partidário do quixotismo cervantino, revelando-o como um Autor que transpõe o idealismo mítico universal para uma obra genuinamente brasileira / Abstract: This study proposes to present a new interpretation of the literary work of Cyro dos Anjos, based on the Quixotesque myth, constantly mentioned in the Author's novels. The myth is discussed from the work of Mircea Eliade, based on the study of religions, as well as from the fenomenology of Gaston Bachelard. The Quixotesque characteristics are based on already established ideas by the classical literary criticism of Cervantes's works, such as the studies by Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset. Art and Poetry are the major representatives of the Quixotesque, that means the imaginative sphere. For Cyro dos Anjos, Poetry is Life, and also includes love, memory, dream, music, religious belief, and even God - the supreme Poetry. This study presents Cyro dos Anjos as a follower of Cervantes's Quixotesque, but as an Author who carries this universal mythical idealism to a genuine Brazilian novel / Doutorado / Literatura Brasileira / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Inventions and transformations : an exploration of mythification and remythification in four contemporary novels

Slabbert, Mathilda 28 February 2006 (has links)
The reading of four contemporary novels, namely: Credo by Melvyn Bragg, The Catastrophist by Ronan Bennett, Everything You Need by A.L. Kennedy and American Gods by Neil Gaiman explores the prominent position of mythification and remythification in contemporary literature. The discussion of Bragg's novel examines the significance of Celtic mythology and folklore and to what extent it influenced Christian mythology on the British Isles and vice versa. The presentation of the transition from a cyclical, pagan to a linear, Christian belief system is analysed. My analysis of Bennett's novel supports the observation that political myth as myth transformed contains elements and qualities embodied by sacred myths and investigates the relevance of Johan Degenaar's observation that "[p]ostmodernism emphasises the fact that myth is an ambiguous phenomenon" and practices an attitude of "eternal vigilance" (1995: 47), as is evident in the main protagonist's dispassionate stance. My reading of Kennedy's novel explores the bond that myth creates between the artist and the audience and argues that the writer as myth creator fulfils a restorative function through the mythical and symbolic qualities embedded in literature. Gaiman's novel American Gods focuses on the function of meta/multi-mythology in contemporary literature (especially the fantasy genre) and on what these qualities reveal about a society and its concerns and values. The thesis contemplates how in each case the original myths were substituted, modulated or transfigured to be presented as metamyth or myth transformed. The analysis shows that myth can be used in various ways in literature: as the data or information that is recreated and transformed in the creative process to establish a common matrix of stories, symbols, images and motifs which represents a bond between the author and the reader in terms of the meaning-making process; to facilitate a spiritual enrichment in a demythologized world and for its restorative abilities. The study is confirmed by detailed mythical reference. / English Studies / (D. Litt. et Phil. (English))

'A far green country' : an analysis of the presentation of nature in works of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction

Langwith, Mark J. January 2007 (has links)
This study undertakes an examination of the representation of nature in works of literature that it regards as early British ‘mythopoeic fantasy’. By this term the thesis understands that fantasy fiction which is fundamentally concerned with myth or myth-making. It is the contention of the study that the connection of these works with myth or the idea of myth is integral to their presentation of nature. Specifically, this study identifies a connection between the idea of nature presented in these novels and the thought of the late-Victorian era regarding nature, primitivism, myth and the impulse behind mythopoesis. It is argued that this conceptual background is responsible for the notion of nature as a virtuous force of spiritual redemption in opposition to modernity and in particular to the dominant modern ideological model of scientific materialism. The thesis begins by examining late-Victorian sensibilities regarding myth and nature, before exposing correlative ideas in selected case studies of authors whose work it posits to be primarily mythopoeic in intent. The first of these studies considers the work of Henry Rider Haggard, the second examines Scottish writer David Lindsay, and the third looks at the mythopoeic endeavours of J. R. R. Tolkien, the latter standing alone among the authors considered in these central case studies in producing fiction under a fully developed theory of mythopoesis. The perspective is then widened in the final chapter, allowing consideration of authors such as William Morris and H. G. Wells. The study attempts to demonstrate the prevalence of an identifiable conceptual model of nature in the period it considers to constitute the age of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction, which it conceives to date from the late-Victorian era to the apotheosis of Tolkien’s work.

Robert Penn Warren's Archetypal Triptych: A Study of the Myths of the Garden, the Journey, and Rebirth in The Cave, Wilderness, and Flood

Phillips, Billie Ray Sudberry, 1937- 12 1900 (has links)
Robert Penn Warren, historian, short story writer, teacher, critic, poet, and novelist, has received favorable attention from literary critics as well as the general reading public. This attention is merited, in part, by Warren's narrative skill and by his use of imagery. A study of his novels reveals that his narrative technique and his imagery are closely related to his interest in myth.

Cosmogonia profana: uma leitura de O visitante, de Osman Lins / Profane cosmogony: a reading of The visitor by Osman Lins

No. of bitstreams: 1 Antonio Coutinho Soares Filho.pdf: 789799 bytes, checksum: 7d4dabc562cc362d9d4fb980060b0b6c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-29 / Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA / In the whole of Brazilian literature, Osman Lins is a name that stands out for the quality and diversity of his production. Novelist, playwright, essayist, among other attributions, the writer has an aesthetic refinement as well as a reflexive posture in face of the cultural, social and political obstacles of the country. The osmanianos studies often highlight the author's romanesque experiments in his so-called maturity phase. Not exclusively, the prior creation to this period still lacks major critical exams, such as the novel debut, The Visitor (1955) corpus of this research. Besides the interesting textual warp, this work presents a humble fortune review, which gives rise to this work. It should be added that on several occasions the writer affirms that the cosmogonical attitude along with the preoccupations with the national ills and the reflection on the creative process, guide his life and the literary work. That said, one wonders how this worldview is presented in The Visitor. Taking into account the traced interdiscurssive of the narrative and the novelist’s social-critcism and point of view. The proposed analysis considers the mythological, biblical, and liturgical inscriptions as well as the development of his story in the plot. In the face of it, there’s a hypothesis is that Lins, in a subversive modulation brings to the scene elements of the Eden myth and Christian liturgy but he also highlights the contradictions of a society that privileges appearances, victimizing the woman mainly. In the theoretical-critical articulation a review of the analytical itinerary of the corpus is done, with the help of Nitrini (1987, 2001, 2003, 2004), Andrade (2001, 2004, 2014) and Ribeiro (2016), among others. The concepts of threshold — Benjamin (1987), Gagnebin (2010); Devices and profanation, according to Agamben (2009, 2010, respectively), also guide this research. The theoretical-critical complete this framework itself, brings reflections on the poetic–myth creation according to the thinking of Mielietinski (1987), Eliade (2010), Perrone-Moisés (1998), Benjamin (2013), Derrida (2005) and Bastazin (2006). The methodological course, starting from the narrative structure and the critical fortune of the work, examines the aesthetic inversions operationalized by osmanian writing. The visitor, Osman Lins' first creative gesture despite his myth-poetic features presents through an introspective plot a sharp vision of the manipulation game that sustains the society, a principle that distorts the essence of the being and search to conceal the contradictory nature of power / No conjunto da literatura brasileira, Osman Lins é um nome que se destaca pela qualidade e pela diversidade de sua produção.
