"They lie, slant and make bias" - or? : A qualitative study of sources in the local newspaper Jönköpings-Posten. / "De ljuger, vinklar och förvränger" - eller? : En kvalitativ undersökning av hur intervjuade i Jönköpings-Posten upplevde intervjusituationen och den färdiga artikeln.

Ringhagen, Sara, Antonsson, Josefine January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine what people who had been interviewed and quoted in a local newspaper feel about being interviewed and what they think of the published article. Our aim was also to make a comparison of “known” sources and “unknown” sources. The main issues were: How do the sources of a local newspaper perceive that they are being treated in the actual interview? What do the sources think of the published article in which they are quoted? Do they trust media and journalists in general? Do the opinions differ between those who are used to being interviewed and those who are unfamiliar with the situation? This study was carried out through qualitative interviews with respondents who have been quoted in a local newspaper in Jönköping, Jönköpings-Posten. Articles were selected from three days in November. The articles should be based on one or more interviews and had to be large. At least one person should be quoted more than once in the selected article. In total 30 interviews were made. The study showed that the sources overall were pleased with the article and the way they were being presented. Nor was there anything to complain about when it came to the journalist’s behaviour. But almost everyone expressed certain scepticism when it came to confidence in media in general. However, most of the persons interviewed had an understanding of the ways that journalists work. We were surprised that the result was so positive and also that the people that were not used to being interviewed were more positive than those who often appear in the local press.

The Relations between News Management andStock Price-A Case Study of Soft-World Group

Yu Lin, Hsin 25 August 2011 (has links)
Online game industry has not only been an emerging industry in the twentieth century, but also an industry with the largest economic scale within the digital content category. Soft-World International Corporation was the first gaming company to be listed in Taiwan in March 29th, 2001. By May 31th, 2011, more than 10 gaming companies have been listed on the GreTai Securities Market (GTSM) in Taiwan, making it one of the trading markets in the globe with the most number of gaming companies in it. Moreover, as Korea created online games; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau prospered them, and China owns the largest online population, Asia has become the most active market for the online game industry in the world. Therefore, studies in online game markets have drawn the attention among local and foreign investors for the past 10 years. In Asian markets, gaming stocks in Taiwan are being highly emphasized; meanwhile, GTSM also stresses the importance of corporate governance and investment environment. Hence, this study ¡§The Relations between News Management and Stock Price ¡V A Case Study of Soft-World Group¡¨ focuses on how gaming companies deal with news pieces. The management team will have a better understanding and control of how stock price is affected by spreading out press releases through the media and making public announcement on the Market Observation Post System. In terms of corporate governance, what are the management behaviors and ways to instantly deal with the media essential to investors who would further make comments about the company and eventually fluctuate the price? This case study gathers and analyzes the historical news, public announcements and stock prices from the two listed companies in Taiwan¡¦s leading gaming enterprise, Soft-World Group ¡V the parent company, Soft-World and its subsidiary, Chinese Gamer .

A Personalized News Recommendation Method for Electronic Newspapers

Lai, Hung-Jen 03 August 2000 (has links)
Electronic Newspapers has become one sort of important communication medium with the rapid growth of audiences on Internet. In Taiwan, the majority of famous news media have their own Electronic Newspapers, which provide a large amount of online news. Though audiences can receive a mass of news, it is difficult for them to find the news in which they are really interested within limited time. Therefore, this current study focused on the research of the mechanism for filtering and recommending news based on the Use and Gratification Theory. The purposes were to develop a personalized news recommendation method for Electronic Newspapers and to examine the effect of the recommendation methods. The results of the empirical study showed that the system with recommendation mechanism was superior to the one with none in both usage performance and overall satisfaction. In this study, there were two recommendation mechanisms. One of them is time-based mechanism which refers to derive the interest automatically by analyzing how much time the audiences spent on reading news, the other is feedback-based mechanism which refers to derive the interest by asking audiences explicitly. It was found that there were no significant differences between the two mechanisms in either usage performance or overall satisfaction. Therefore, the time-based mechanism is helpful for audiences in finding personal news.

The Poverty of News Discourse: The news coverage of poverty in New Zealand

Summers, John Henry January 2006 (has links)
This thesis uses methods of discourse analysis to examine the news coverage of poverty in New Zealand. It seeks to find the extent to which dominant discourses, those that reinforce the dominant order, are reproduced and become hegemonic in the coverage of poverty. The use of news sources and their effect on poverty coverage, as well as the news' assumption of shared values are also examined. This thesis argues that through such processes news coverage reproduces dominant discourses that elide the extent to which poverty can be seen as an important and problematic social issue in New Zealand. This thesis analyses a range of New Zealand news texts about poverty. It looks at the press coverage of a Unicef announcement about child poverty in 2005. It also includes an analysis of news stories that refer to poverty, the poor and issues of welfare over a month in 2005. The final chapter of research analyses two television documentaries, The Streetkids and Life on the Streets, that are about aspects of homelessness in New Zealand. This study finds the reporting of poverty in New Zealand to be inadequate, containing debate over poverty and reproducing the hegemony of dominant discourses.

Faith and News: A Quantitative Study of the Relationship Between Religiosity and TV News Exposure

Marvez, Raquel 08 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between religiosity and broadcast news usage. This study examines the level of religiosity of individuals and its correlation to broadcast news exposure. The correlation between religiosity and perceptions of violence on broadcast news was also measured. Two theories were applied in this study. Uses and Gratifications asserts the active character of the audience to choose what they watch, how often, etc., and Selective Exposure defends the ability of the individual to select media that coincides with personal value systems. These two theories complement each other and provide support in the evaluation of religiosity and broadcast news exposure. A survey was posted on-line through various message boards. Twenty-five questions were used to determine religiosity, broadcast news exposure, broadcast news and perceptions of violence on broadcast news. In sum, all hypotheses were supported and the general idea that as religiosity increases broadcast news exposure decreases was confirmed. Nevertheless, due to the small effect size the study also indicates that religiosity does not explain a great percentage of the behavior of an individual towards broadcast news exposure. Therefore, the results of the study indicate that even though religiosity is not a good predictor of broadcast news exposure in general, religiosity affects to a small degree the choices of a more religious individual to expose himself to broadcast news. The perception of violence in broadcast news is also greater in religious than non-religious individuals.
