The manifestation and potential of constructive journalism in South African digital news

Fölscher-Kingwill, Barbara 11 September 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This study aimed to establish the manifestation of constructive journalism, and the perceptions and attitudes of journalists and editors towards the form, in South African digital news. A qualitative content analysis was applied to a sample of 134 articles on “evictions” (written during SA's first Covid lockdown in 2020) from three online news-outlets varying in editorial approach. Semi-structured interviews with a purposively selected sample of journalists and editors followed. Findings showed that the most distinctive principles of constructive journalism were largely absent in the articles. Yet, interviewees recognised a role for the form to be introduced alongside watchdog journalism. Views ranged from supporting constructive journalism as a necessary and valuable approach that would strengthen watchdog journalism, to seeing constructive journalism as a “nice to have” in the overall news cycle. In some of the outlets, constructive journalism has recently been included in output, even if not labelled as such. The contrast between the two dataset's findings indicates a shift in how some journalists have started thinking about the information needs of audiences and ways to address those. Journalists showed acute awareness of the effects of relentless negative news on audiences. Findings revealed that industry pressures posed significant challenges to the implementation of constructive journalism, but that certain of those challenges are also opportunities. One proposition was that newsrooms collaborate to tackle big-issue projects through creating joint investigative/constructive teams. Some journalists had difficulty with a clear conception of constructive journalism but found it noteworthy to see constructive journalism as an additional step in the overall news cycle not replacing their monitorial role. Interviewees wanted to learn more about expanded interviewing techniques proposed in constructive journalism to add complexity to conflict reporting. The study enriches understanding of the applicability of constructive journalism in developing democracies and shows that the form can add nuance and complexity to current practices of watchdog journalism dominating South African news-reporting. The risks of constructive journalism being misinterpreted or manipulated by partisan media requires of journalists to adhere to rigorous journalistic norms proposed in constructive journalism.

Papperstidningen i den digitala tidsåldern : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys i nyhetsvärdering på Aftonbladet

Alfredsson Kamp, Fredrik, Eriksson, Carl-Fredrik January 2017 (has links)
Purpose and framing of the question: To study how Aftonbladet’s news values and news selection have changed in the last two decades. Method and material: Quantitative study in form of a coding scheme covering Aftonbladet’s front pages in the month of march of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. Main result: Both news selection and news value remains in the bigger perspective unchanged, indicating that the newspaper print version is rather unaffected by the change of online journalism. That in turn indicates that the gatekeeper role more or less remains the same for the print version of Aftonbladet.

The Straits Times' reporting of Singapore's communication news, 1992-1995

Tan, Lay Siong, n/a January 1996 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyse how the Straits Times reported Singapore's communication news between May 1992 and October 1995, with a focus on Singapore's communication regionalisation. This study is a modest attempt to depart from some of the approaches taken by recent communication related studies of the Singapore experience. They tend to focus on the domestic side of state-press relationship and the issue of Singaporean press freedom, without sustained consideration of external forces, such as globalisation. This analysis provides a synthesis of secondary sources and a qualitative content analysis of communication news in the Straits Times. The results suggest there has been a convergence between the stories in the Straits Times and official views about two themes - business regionalisation and 'Asian' media standards. Results suggest the government has an extensive influence over Singapore's communication, especially with regard to media content. Also, the analysis shows Singapore's identification with Asia, despite bilateral and regional tensions in business and culture, and suggests an uneasy relationship between Singapore and the West, in particular, with the US. That is, while Singapore's business relations with the US are good, its cultural relations are not, especially when Singapore's practice of media standards does not accept the American interpretation, but one based on its national interests. This study provides a glimpse of global communication forces which are influencing Singapore's communication development, as interpreted in the stories from the Straits Times. Although there remains uncertainties about Singapore's communication future, this study may provide an insight as to whether Singapore has taken the right direction in becoming a leading country in advocating an 'Asian voice'.

"They lie, slant and make bias" - or? : A qualitative study of sources in the local newspaper Jönköpings-Posten. / "De ljuger, vinklar och förvränger" - eller? : En kvalitativ undersökning av hur intervjuade i Jönköpings-Posten upplevde intervjusituationen och den färdiga artikeln.

Ringhagen, Sara, Antonsson, Josefine January 2008 (has links)
<p> <p>The purpose of this thesis was to examine what people who had been interviewed and quoted in a local newspaper feel about being interviewed and what they think of the published article. Our aim was also to make a comparison of “known” sources and “unknown” sources.</p><p>The main issues were: How do the sources of a local newspaper perceive that they are being treated in the actual interview? What do the sources think of the published article in which they are quoted? Do they trust media and journalists in general? Do the opinions differ between those who are used to being interviewed and those who are unfamiliar with the situation?</p><p>This study was carried out through qualitative interviews with respondents who have been quoted in a local newspaper in Jönköping, Jönköpings-Posten. Articles were selected from three days in November. The articles should be based on one or more interviews and had to be large. At least one person should be quoted more than once in the selected article. In total 30 interviews were made.</p><p>The study showed that the sources overall were pleased with the article and the way they were being presented. Nor was there anything to complain about when it came to the journalist’s behaviour. But almost everyone expressed certain scepticism when it came to confidence in media in general. However, most of the persons interviewed had an understanding of the ways that journalists work. We were surprised that the result was so positive and also that the people that were not used to being interviewed were more positive than those who often appear in the local press.</p></p>

Observations on the News Factory: A Case Study of CNN

Grogan, Andree Marie 12 January 2006 (has links)
News provides us with information about our world so we can make decisions about the matters that affect our daily lives—both for our personal and the public good. Television news is a pervasive force in our society, and it is important to study because of the influence it exerts on human action. But news is produced by human beings, and those human beings must make selections and rejections regarding what makes it into a newscast and what doesn’t. In addition, decisions have to be made on how to frame, present, order, word, edit, shape what news items are included. Many forces influence these decisions throughout the complex television news process. Media sociology scholars urge researchers to examine these influences at five levels: the individual, newsroom, organization, extra-organization and societal or cultural levels. This gatekeeping study examined this complex news process at work and revealed the complex set of forces that influence news decisions by news producers at CNN, a global 24-hour news network. By exposing the processes by which the news is made, one can better understand the influences that shape the end product—the news.

Snacking on different views : The potential of tagesschau.de in offering multiple perspectives in news overview elements to a young adult audience

Willers, Annika January 2012 (has links)
In this paper a news site’s potential of meeting conflicting needs is considered. Snacking - hencereading news in a quick selective style - is one trend among young readers which seems to be inconflict with assessing the credibility of news, which in turn depends on receiving multipleperspectives or viewpoints among the issues read. As young audiences neither want to beforced to put more effort into news reading, nor want to receive news in a single-layered way, satisfaction with the news is hampered. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate acurrent news site’s potential in complying with both needs: snacking on the one hand andreceiving multiple perspectives on the other. As research case, the German public service newssite tagesschau.de is investigated in two methodological approaches. In a content analysis thepotential of the news site is assessed by analyzing ways of presenting perspectives in snacknews element. In a reception study this potential is reassessed by a young audience sample. Itwas found that perspectives indeed are presented in snack news elements in direct or indirectforms, often represented by different sources than the journalist’s. However, it shows that thesepresentations of perspectives not always reach the audience. Members of the audience leaveout many elements that could be snacked on, and stick to headlines for the main part. Thisimplies that they miss multiple perspectives offered in elements suitable for snacking, such ashyperlinks. In order to offer multiple perspectives to snacking news readers, more controversyshould be indicated in headlines, comparisons of perspectives should be made easier and linksshould be more relevant by leaving out aspects perceived as unnecessary and by representingsources in a better balance.
