Andersson, Anton, Urborn, Christoffer January 2016 (has links)
Problem definition and purpose: The media industry is a sphere faced with constant challenges. Technological inventions and economy are changing the rules of how and what media reports. To be able to stay current and make profit the newspapers have to adapt new thinking and evolve. In Sweden the journalistic union have stated that the line between editorial material and advertisement has became thinner. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the state of three local newspapers today and the ten years back. It will examine if the occurence of what can be define as advetorial news – articles made by the newspapers own reporters but which serve and obvious profit for a second part – has increased or decreased. Method and material: To find an answer to the purpose of this thesis a quantitative content analysis have been done on a total of 1005 local news articles from three Swedish local newspapers in 2005 and 2015. Main result: The result of the content analysis shows that news defined as advetorial occur more frequently in two of the three studied news papers 2015 compared to 2005, while news defined as advetorial decreased in one of the news papers. The result also show that the total number of local news articles has decreased from 2005 to 2015.

Alfredsson Kamp, Fredrik, Eriksson, Carl-Fredrik January 2017 (has links)
Purpose and framing of the question: To study how Aftonbladet’s news values and news selection have changed in the last two decades. Method and material: Quantitative study in form of a coding scheme covering Aftonbladet’s front pages in the month of march of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. Main result: Both news selection and news value remains in the bigger perspective unchanged, indicating that the newspaper print version is rather unaffected by the change of online journalism. That in turn indicates that the gatekeeper role more or less remains the same for the print version of Aftonbladet.

Observations on the News Factory: A Case Study of CNN

Grogan, Andree Marie 12 January 2006 (has links)
News provides us with information about our world so we can make decisions about the matters that affect our daily lives—both for our personal and the public good. Television news is a pervasive force in our society, and it is important to study because of the influence it exerts on human action. But news is produced by human beings, and those human beings must make selections and rejections regarding what makes it into a newscast and what doesn’t. In addition, decisions have to be made on how to frame, present, order, word, edit, shape what news items are included. Many forces influence these decisions throughout the complex television news process. Media sociology scholars urge researchers to examine these influences at five levels: the individual, newsroom, organization, extra-organization and societal or cultural levels. This gatekeeping study examined this complex news process at work and revealed the complex set of forces that influence news decisions by news producers at CNN, a global 24-hour news network. By exposing the processes by which the news is made, one can better understand the influences that shape the end product—the news.

Quake aftermath: Christchurch journalists' collective trauma experience and the implications for their reporting.

Scanlon, Sean Kevin January 2014 (has links)
On February 22, 2011, Christchurch-based journalists were jolted out of their normal work routine by a large 6.3 magnitude earthquake that killed 185 people, wrecked the city and forced reporters to reappraise their journalism. This study considers how the earthquake affected journalists’ relationship to the community, their use of sources and news selection. A theory of collective trauma is used to explain the changes that journalists made to their reporting practice. Specifically, Christchurch journalists had a greater identification and attachment to their audience post-earthquake. Journalists viewed themselves as part of the earthquake story, which prompted them to view sources differently, use those sources differently and see advocacy as a keystone of their news work after the disaster. This study adds to a growing scholarship about journalists and trauma, but focuses on what the event meant for local reporters’ choice of sources and news selection rather than measuring rates of psychological distress.

Väggen och dess påverkan : en studie om en betalväggs påverkan på nyhetsurval / The wall and its effects : a study about a paywalls impact on news selection

Oscarsson, Joel January 2016 (has links)
This study examines how journalistic content can be affected when a local newspapers website changes its business model to what is commonly known as a premium paywall. This study is based upon data provided by the local newspaper Barometern. The data concerns the number of online articles included in fifteen subject and geographically defined categories. The data was collected from two three month long periods, one before and one after the introduction of the news paper paywall that was installed in October of 2014. The study finds that the total number of articles published after the introduction of the paywall was significantly higher than before but that the share of articles included in the different subject categories did not change considerably for paying readers. For non- paying readers however, the data show that the share of articles for the different subject and geographical categories changed significantly. Even though the data from this study cannot confirm a correlation, it does highlight a possible connection between media competition in different local markets and subject matters and the amount of articles that are placed behind the newspapers online paywall in that category. This means that non-paying readers in this case got access to a large number of articles included in some categories and only a small portion of articles included in some other categories. Non-paying readers not only got access to a smaller number of articles but also to a different content profile than paying readers.

A study of web analytics and gatekeeping within the journalistic field

Brolin, Pär, Svedström, Alexandra January 2016 (has links)
Online newspapers have enabled a new way for the audience to interact with the news. It has also created new ways for journalists to study crowd behavior. Through web analytics increases the public's opportunities to get involved in the creation of news. In the same time the journalistic field is facing a difficult economic situation and where a reduced readership is a disturbing fact. The following study has focused on explaining and developing an understanding of how online journalism is appearing along with the emergence of web analytics. The aim with the study was to examine how journalistic standards and way of working evolve in combination with web analytics. A case study has been carried out including 9 interviews with online journalists from the genres of general news, sports and culture. The study's results demonstrate that online journalists do not see web analytics as a necessary step in the process of news selection, but it is used as a complementary interpretation variable. Two factors that contribute to online journalists use of web analytics in the journalistic field has been identified: perception of economic instability at the organizational level, as well as the desire to maintain it’s readership by writing content that the journalist are aware that the audience wants. In addition, three negative forces that inhibit the use of web analytics has been demonstrated: the older generation of journalists' traditional view on the creation of news, a conservative view on news value and the journalist willingness to maintain its credibility and perceived knowledge stable. Another contribution is that these kind of aspects can not be studied without regard to genre context, especially when it comes to the genre of culture, that should be seen as a separate field within the journalistic field.

Paywall or not paywall – that is the question : A qualitative study of what kind of content Aftonbladet and Expressen have placed behind paywalls during the Coronavirus pandemic 2020.

Lindén, Sarah, Ottestam, Hedda January 2021 (has links)
Paywalls have quickly become a large part of the media industry and are constantly evolving. Most news media today use a form of paywall to be able to earn revenue off their content. In this study we have made a qualitative text analysis where we compared themes between COVID-19 articles behind paywalls and articles which are free to read on Aftonbladet and Expressen. By using theories concerning news value, news selection and media logic, we were able to examine what kind of themes we could find in the articles placed behind paywalls and compare that to the articles that is free to read.   The results showed that there were more differences than similarities between the content that is placed behind paywalls and the content that is free to read on Aftonbladet and Expressen. When the articles were free to read, they frequently had content that focused on the simplification of information from the authorities, calming articles where experts are not worried and articles about the individuals and their role in a crisis. For the articles that were placed behind paywalls, clickbait captions were more frequently used, probably because of a financial aspect. Most of the articles that were placed behind paywalls had a negative tone where words such as death, panic and worry were involved. According to this result, we came to the conclusion that the articles in the analyzed online newspapers have two different media logics: one for the news that is placed behind paywalls and one for the news that is free to read.

Silveira, Fábio Alves January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the news values adopted by Jornal de Londrina to deal with urban issues in the city of Londrina, such as land use and occupation, the environmental issue and its relations with the construction industry and the real estate sector. The clipping used was the last three years of operation of the newspaper, which circulated between July 1989 and December 2015. This clipping allowed the selection of 121 reports, divided into eight themes that are related to this newspaper's agenda. Of these, two themes were chosen to be analyzed in the light of the news values, as they are more conflicting situations and deal with legal deviations and relevance, referring to two of the most important news values that appear since the first academic studies on the subject. journalism. The debate on news values was made based on a discussion proposed by five authors: Gisele Silva, Marcos Paulo da Silva, Pamela Shoemaker, Mauro Wolf and Nelson Traquina. These authors were chosen because their reflections point to a model of operational news values and easy to apply to the daily practice of newsrooms. / Doutor

Borngrund, Alexa, Nyängen, Linnéa January 2023 (has links)
Digitalization has made it possible to consume news through both newspapers and social media, but we rarely consider if both platforms share the same news selection. This bachelor study aims to compare which agenda Dagens Nyheter conveys through the choices in the displayed news on the front page of the newspaper and the Instagram feed. The theoretical framework is based on gatekeeping theory, agenda-setting theory and news value theory. Using the quantitative content analysis 486 news articles were coded and analyzed whereof 182 were articles from the news front page and 304 were from the Instagram feed. The results show that hard and soft news are equally represented in the two news outlets. On the other hand, the results also indicate that there are differences regarding the centralization of certain topics, the nature of the news and the main actors. From these results, we conclude that different agendas are conveyed through the news reported between the two mediums.
