In 1956, shortly before Nigeria’s independence, Shell BP found crude oil in Oloibiri Bayelsa State marking a turning point in the socioeconomics and politics of the nation. Since then, oil has grown into a major export commodity comprising over ninety-five percent of the nation’s gross national product. The region is one of the world’s largest ecosystems, but due to the ongoing pollution, a direct result of the oil companies lacks potable water. This study addresses this humanitarian crisis and examines the agency of Nigeria’s federal government and the collaboration with multinational oil corporations’ contributions to the environmental deconstruction in the region. The thesis further investigates the historical moments building towards the uprising in Ogoniland, centered around the leader Ken-Saro Wiwa, who was killed by the Nigerian government. It examines social movements in the region, and aims to tie the local question to the federal question of unity in the country.

Hence, gender analysis of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programmes have largely underestimated the importance of also considering men's gender identity. Breaking this pattern, this dissertation examines the ability of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration approach adopted in the Niger Delta to change or consolidate violent masculinities among ex-combatants. The selected case study is of special relevance to the topic at hand since the conflict in the Niger Delta has been partly attributed to the constructions of masculinity that prevail in this Nigerian region. This diploma thesis is focused on studying of the effect of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on eucaryotic microorganisms. Plasma sterilization is considered to be an alternative method to conventional sterilization processes. Contrary to standard decontamination methods it doesn´t stress exposed material by heat, pressure and chemicals. Plasma acts on eucaryotic and procaryotic systems by means of synergy of three inactivation mechanisms. They are various reactive species, UV radiation and heat. The Aspergillus niger has been chosen as a bio-indicator enabling to evaluate the effect of plasma assisted microbial inactivation. Plasma was generated in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure. Nitrogen and argon were used as working gases, paper and PET foil were used as carrying media. The influence of various working conditions on the sterilization effect was studied. Namely it was the influence of plasma exposition time, plasma power density, the type of operating gas and type of supporting medium. The effect of UV radiation in combination with temperature, temperature and direct plasma were studied separately. According to our results the efficiency of DBD increases with plasma power density, resp. plasma exposition time. When comparing sterilization efficiency of nitrogen and argon operating at the same conditions, the higher sterilization effect was observed in argon. The influence of the carrying medium on sterilization effectiveness was proved. It was caused by the different structure of surface. It was found out, that in our experimental setup the active species are probably the main inactivation mechanism. The influence of temperature on inactivation of microorganisms was negligible. The combination of UV radiation and temperature reached the decontamination level about 2 orders. The discharge parameters were studied by means of optical emmision spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy enabled to evaluate possible damage of exposed materials through DBD.

The study of production of hydrolytic enzymes dealt with the production of cellulase and polygalacturonase by two microbial strains - Aspergillus niger and Aureobasidium pullulans. The enzymes were produced in solid-state fermentation system. The wheat straw and sugar beet pulp were used as a substrate. The substrates were moistened by water, mineral solution or by medium with glucose. The effect of mineral solution and glucose on production of these enzymes were monitored during cultivation. The highest production of polygalacturonase was achieved by Aspergillus niger during cultivation on sugar beet pulp moistened by mineral solution. The highest production of cellulase was achieved by Aspergillus niger during cultivation on wheat straw moistened by medium with glucose.

Study of the employment of waste paper to microbial production of cellulase was carried out using Aspergillus niger cultivation on carbon sources that have been waste office paper and cardboard, humidified by no – carbon medium or distiled water. Cultivation took place in the SSF way in Erlenmeyer flasks and columns. Concentration of extracellular proteins, cellulase and protease activity for selected samples were monitored. It was found that the most advantageous method of cultivation in terms of cellulase activity production is the cultivation in the column washing by no – carbon medium in three day intervals.

Women’s Participation and Social Provisions in Peace AgreementsIssifu, Abdul Karim January 2020 (has links)
Is the inclusion of social provisions in peace agreements influenced by the participation of women, and if so, why? It is suggested that if women participate in the negotiation, the agreement is likely to broaden with social provisions. But our understanding regarding why social provisions are shaped by the participation of women is still limited as previous research rarely looked at this phenomenon. By drawing on theories suggesting women’s participation will broaden the scope of the negotiation, and theories proposing women through the agency for being at the negotiation table would push for social provisions, this study hypothesizes that if women participate, the agreements are likely to broaden with more social provisions. A content analysis of the agreements reached on Liberia 2003, Sierra Leone 1999, Côte d’Ivoire 2003 and Niger 1995, and a supplementary in-depth comparative case study presents evidence suggesting women does influence peace agreements to become more holistic with more social provisions. At the same time, this study also highlights the essence of taking other factors that shape the scope of the agreements and the presence or absence of social provisions such as the context and duration of the conflicts and the belligerent actor’ will into consideration.

Bioadsorción del Pb+2 por las biomasas de Aspergillus niger y Aspergillus fumigatus aislados del CallaoMamani Huaman, Edgardo January 2012 (has links)
Publicación a texto completo no autorizada por el autor / Investiga la bioadsorcion del plomo (II) usando como material bioadsorbente las biomasas fúngicas Aspergillus niger y Aspergillus fumigatus aislados del pueblo joven Puerto Nuevo-callao. El material bioadsorbente se obtuvo de las muestras tomadas de la zona contaminada del pueblo joven Puerto Nuevo-Callao. El material tratado fue secado en una estufa a la temperatura de 80 °C por 2 horas. Se determinó la bioadsorcion de plomo (II) en solución por las biomasas celular de dos hongos por el método instrumental de espectroscopia de absorción atómica. Los experimentos sobre el efecto del pH en el proceso de bioadsorción de Pb (II) por las biomasas fúngicas demostraron que el pH óptimo es 5.0; así como el experimento del efecto de la temperatura optima por las biomasas fúngicas demostraron una temperatura optima de 25°C para la biomasa fúngicas; la concentración del plomo (II) que presenta la mejor bioadsorcion es a 1000ppm. Del estudio de la cinética del proceso de bioadsorción, se determinó que la biomasa de Aspergillus niger 98% fue más eficiente en la remoción del plomo (II) que el Aspergillus fumigatus 96%.
El equilibrio se alcanzó a las 100 minutos del inicio del proceso de bioadsorción logrando un porcentaje de remoción de Plomo (II) para Aspergillus niger 98% y para Aspergillus fumigatus 96%. Se concluye que las biomasas fúngicas remueven eficientemente plomo (II) en solución y pueden utilizarse para descontaminar nichos acuáticos contaminados con este metal. / Tesis

Einen großräumigen Überblick über ein Gebiet von Interesse können Satellitenbilddaten ermöglichen. Dabei werden räumliche Beziehungen erkennbar und lassen sich untersuchen. Die Bestimmung der räumlichen Verteilung und des zeitlichen Ausmaßes eines großräumigen Ereignisses, wie einer Überflutung, ist oftmals nur mit Unterstützung von fernerkundlichen Daten möglich. Es besteht der Bedarf an kontinuierlichen Informationen über den Zustand eines Systems über einen längeren Zeitraum, wenn Zusammenhänge zwischen den natürlichen Schwankungen und unterschiedlichen anthropogenen sowie natürlichen Einflüssen untersucht werden sollen.
Das Nigerbinnendelta in der Republik Mali nimmt in der semi-ariden Region eine besondere Stellung ein, da es sich um einen Gunststandort handelt, der wesentlich zur wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung der Region beiträgt.
Die im Rahmen dieser Arbeit zu erstellende Datenbasis beruht auf SAR-Daten, deren größter Vorteil in der Wetter- und Tageszeitunabhängigkeit liegt. Eine Herausforderung bei der Nutzung von Radaraufnahmen sind die spezielle Bildgeometrie, der auftretende Speckle-Effekt sowie das komplexe Rückstreuverhalten der Strahlung.
Die Datenbasis bilden ERS- und Envisat-Aufnahmen, deren Auswertung zunächst die Datenaufbereitung bzw. die Vorverarbeitung, u. a. in Form einer radiometrischen Kalibrierung und einer Speckle-Filterung, vorangestellt ist. Die Anwendung von pixelbasierten Auswertemethoden ist aufgrund der radiometrischen Eigenschaften der Daten weniger geeignet, weshalb die in der Fernerkundung neuere objektorientierte und wissensbasierte Klassifikation zur Anwendung kam.
Das Fehlen von zeitnah erhobenen Geländebeobachtungen sowie das komplexe Rückstreuverhalten der Mikrowellen erfordern eine ausführliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Untersuchungsgebiet sowie mit dem Verhalten der C-Band SAR-Daten in Feuchtgebieten. Innerhalb der SAR-Daten treten vermehrt Überschneidungen in der Rückstreuung unterschiedlicher Landbedeckungen auf. Deren Trennung erfordert Vorkenntnisse über die Ausbreitung der Landbedeckungen zu unterschiedlichen hydrologischen Stadien. Die zum Aufbau der wissensbasierten Auswertung erfolgte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Untersuchungsgebiet beinhaltete neben der geographischen Aufbereitung die Erstellung einer Vergleichsbasis, basierend auf multispektralen Aufnahmen.
Auf Grundlage je einer Aufnahme während sowie nach der Überschwemmung wurden für die objektorientierte Klassifikation zwei Regelwerke, in die neben der auszuwertenden SAR-Aufnahme zusätzliche Informationen wie z. B. der Texturparameter Entropie eingingen, erstellt. Das Ergebnis ist eine Datenbasis der Überschwemmungsflächen zu verschiedenen Aufnahmezeitpunkten. Die Evaluierung von zwei Klassifikationsergebnissen ergab eine sehr gute Trennung der überschwemmten und nicht überschwemmten Bereiche. Die aufbereiteten SAR-Daten geben einen Überblick über die Ressource Wasser für bereits vergangene Zeitschnitte. Zusammen mit aktuellen Informationen können diese einen Beitrag für ein nachhaltiges Management dieser Lebensgrundlage im Nigerbinnendelta leisten.

Influence of temperature, water activity, and oil content on growth and aflatoxin production on oil seeds by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticusChih-Hsuan Chang (9865223) 18 December 2020 (has links)
<p>Aflatoxins (AFs) are highly toxic second metabolites produced by <i>Aspergillus flavus </i>and<i> A. parasiticus</i>. They are widely detected in cereals, spices, and drinks worldwide. Aflatoxin contamination of foods and crops poses a high health risk for humans and livestock. It is well known that environmental conditions and substrates could influence fungal growth and aflatoxin production. This study tested the effect of water activity (0.82, 0.86, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.98 a<sub>w</sub>) and incubation temperatures (20°, 27°, and 35°C) on the growth and aflatoxin production of <i>A. flavus </i>and <i>A. parasiticus</i> on ground flax seeds and ground niger seeds. The effect of oil contents of ground niger seeds on fungal growth and aflatoxin production was also investigated in this study.</p><p> These two fungal species could not grow on any of the tested substrates with 0.82 a<sub>w</sub> at 20°, 27°, or 35°C. <i>Aspergillus flavus</i> grew most rapidly on flax seeds with 0.90 a<sub>w</sub> at 27°C and also 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> at 27° or 35°C. However, on niger seeds, <i>A. flavus </i>grew best at 0.90 or 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> incubated at 35°C as well as at 0.94 or 0.98 a<sub>w</sub> incubated at 27°C. <i>Aspergillus parasiticus</i> showed the optimum growth on flax seeds with 0.90 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C, whereas on niger seeds, the optimum occurred on seeds with 0.90 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C and also on seeds with 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> at 27° or 35°C. The optimum conditions for <i>A. flavus </i>to produce high levels of aflatoxins (270-299 μg/kg) on flax seeds were 0.90 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C; whereas, the optimum conditions for <i>A. flavus </i>to produce aflatoxin (203-278 μg/kg) on niger seeds were 0.90 or 0.98 a<sub>w</sub> at 27°C and also 0.90 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C. <i>Aspergillus parasiticus</i> produced high levels of aflatoxins (284-365 μg/kg) on flax seeds under the following three conditions, 0.86 or 0.98 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C and 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> at 27°C; <i>A. parasiticus</i> produced 200-384 μg/kg of aflatoxins on niger seeds under nine out of 12 tested incubation conditions.</p><p> Reducing mean oil contents from 35.2 to 10.5% of ground niger seeds had very little effect on the growth of the two fungi but significantly decreased their aflatoxin production under certain incubation conditions. On de-oiled niger seeds inoculated with <i>A. flavus</i>, only 13μg/kg of AFB1 was found on seeds with 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> at 27°C; whereas, on de-oiled niger seeds inoculated with <i>A. parasiticus</i>, high levels of aflatoxins (245-345 μg/kg) were only detected under the three following incubation conditions, 0.90 or 0.94 a<sub>w</sub> at 27°C, and 0.86 a<sub>w</sub> at 35°C.</p> This study showed that the optimum growth and aflatoxin production by <i>A. flavus </i>and<i> A. parasiticus </i>were not identical and influenced by incubation conditions, including temperature, water activity, and growth substrates. The results of this study could help establish guidelines for post-harvest and storage conditions for oil seeds to prevent fungal growth and aflatoxin formation.

Can death predict life? : A study on the direct child replacement effect in Niger - an instrumental variable approach.Karlberg Hauge, Vincent, Wadell Leimdörfer, August January 2020 (has links)
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region in the world with the highest population growth and child mortality. By measuring to what extent the parents "replace" a child in the case of death, we estimate the direct child replacement effect in Niger between 1976 and 2011. Our novel empirical strategy is a modified 2SPS instrumental variable approach, which exploits the exogeneity of precipitation and outdoor temperature in connection with the mother's pregnancy and the child's first five years. We find an estimate of 0.9. The estimate found close to unity implicates a relatively small trade-off between reducing child mortality and population growth, both being large problems in Niger. Our approach is a contribution to the literature on quasi-experimental methods in that we consider properties of respondents on an individual level in the first stage model, and redefine the outcome to a household level in the second stage. The redefinition is thereby a way of drawing conclusions on a group level.
