Working at doing good: worker identity in career volunteers

Carnes, Rebekah January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Nadia Shapkina / In the current climate of proliferating nonprofit organizations and demanding social service needs, volunteers play a crucial role. This study looks at career volunteers, who, unlike other types of volunteers, identify with their work as if it were a paying occupation. It examines personal narratives and experiences through interviews in two Kansas communities and in-depth participant observation in one Kansas homeless shelter to find unique identity formation in the way that career volunteers make sense of who they are and what they do. These volunteers show a tendency to reject modern frames around the concepts of work, home, and volunteerism. Instead, they integrate life categories, lending an often counter-cultural conception of identity and meaning to their lives’ work.

Como resultado desse esforço, pretendem que suas ações influenciem políticas públicas / Abstract: Bruno Latour who was told that if the social scientist wants to research the complex societies it must be attentive to their major organizations. In his words, it is necessary to dwell on those organizations that characterize the society, which are the "veins" that "pump" the capital to the "heart" of society: income, consumption and mass production system that sustains society (Latour, 1994). Accordingly, to understand capitalist society, an important actor are private companies, organizations and representatives of the central system that makes capitalism. Aiming to analyze the social actions within contemporary capitalist society, the projects of social responsibility and sustainability, developed by private companies seem to think a good object contemporary society and the forms of social interaction between business and society. Therefore the financial market seemed so appropriate for this work, because they express the basis upon which capitalism is structured and intriguingly is also one of the areas of capitalist society that invests more in corporate social responsibility. Since the late nineties has seen the growth of social actions developed by private companies, who want no more to do charity or welfare, but that claim contribute to deeper changes in society, such as the end of social inequality, the increase the reach citizenship, and promoting environmental sustainability. Many of these companies amounted sectors within their corporations and devote a considerable amount of resources to promote discussion and propose actions aimed at discussing social and environmental problems, previously studied by the state and the universities. As a result of this effort, claim that their actions influence public policy / Doutorado / Ciencias Sociais / Doutor em Ciências Sociais
