Jornalismo científico fetichizado : análise comparativa das revistas superinteressante, suas edições especiais e Nathional Geographic Magazine /

Moraes, Verena Raquel Fornetti. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: We discuss the idea that there is a fetishism of scientific journalism on Superinteressante Magazine, its special editions and on National Geographic Magazine, published in United States and translated to be published in Brazil. Our goal is to investigate what happens with science when it becomes a product, made specifically to sell magazines, and when it's subdued by magazine style's patterns: sensation, success and relaxing. The hypothesis is when science stories take this form, they become fetishism because it's transformed in simple entertainment. Observe, however, that our purpose is not to criticize the science on media analyzing if the texts are coherents to researches but point out how science looses the critic potential in this fetishism. Our interest is demonstrate how scientific journalism fails using science as an arm to understand society. / Mestre

Imagining Haiti: Representations of Haiti in the American Press during the U.S. Occupation, 1915-1934

Baroco, Molly M 13 May 2011 (has links)
Throughout the United States occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934, the U.S. government and its supporters were forced to defend the legitimacy of American action. In order to justify it to the American public, officials and journalists created a dichotomy of capacity between an inferior Haiti and a superior U.S., and they presented the occupation as a charitable civilizing mission. This vision of Haiti and Haitians was elaborated in a racialized discourse wherein Haitians were assigned various negative traits that rendered them incapable of self-government. In examining how the New York Times, the National Geographic Magazine, and the Crisis represented Haiti, I demonstrate how race was the primary signifier, and how these representations were used to either perpetuate or challenge the American racial social hierarchy.

Juránková, Simona January 2013 (has links)
Travel periodicals are one of the means, how can readers - potential tourists to learn about a specific destination, or be motivated to visit presented country. This diploma thesis describes the development and transformation of the tourism magazines that are published in the Czech Republic after 1989. The attention is focused on the title COT business (for professionals) and National Geographic (for the public). Although targeted at different audiences, both periodicals bring news and coverage from destinations, interviews with travelers, practical travel advices and thus contribute for the increase or decline of demand for various places. Selected magazines gradually gained a strong position on the Czech media market and can be thus described as prototypes in their segment. Especially in recent years in comparison with the competition selected periodicals have declined in sold costs, advertising revenues and readership. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the market overall with selected travel periodicals and also identify opportunities that should selected titles (publishers) include into marketing planning, if they want to stay "leaders" on the media market. The analytical part aims at the development of photographic techniques and photographic content in the selected years 1914, 1964 and 2014. Using the method of content analysis this work deals with over 1000 photographs and allocates them in different coding categories. It is explored which category or characteristic features were typical for each period, for example in connection with gender, locations or the way of capturing the image. The results of content analysis are put into context by semiotic study which is based on the methods of philosopher Roland Barthes. In addition to that, the analytical part is supplemented with the analysis of selected visual...

The Contribution Of Geographic Information System To The Urban Planning Process In Turkey

Kepoglu, Volkan Osman 01 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis attempts to show the contribution of Geographic Information System to urban planning process in Turkey. GIS can enhance the planning system by providing an access to accurate, reliable and update geographical information, producing alternatives according to the scenario and ensuring participation in the evaluation of the alternatives. This is the high level contribution of GIS for the enhancement of planning. The contribution can occur / if certain conditions are sustained such as establishment of geographical data provision system among public institutions. Obviously, these are connected with available technical and social infrastructure. Although, there is not a digital infrastructure system among the public institutions, several general directorates have started to provide some geographical information in their works. These efforts should be increased in quality and quantity. From the planning point of view, we argue that these are not even at satisfying level to work with the GIS in the plan-making processes. To prove our argument, the use of GIS and technology in the Bank of Provinces and private planning offices are inquired. The results of the thesis study show that the Bank of Provinces is in the transition period for the use of GIS. Private planning offices are in the initial stage and some of them seem unable to adopt themselves if the plan-making process becomes digital, because of the extra costs for them. Therefore, geographical data provision policies among public planning institutions will determine the future development of GIS in the planning process.
