Fuelling insecurity?: Sino-Myanmar energy cooperation and human security in Myanmar.

This thesis examines the relationship between energy, development and human security in Sino-Myanmar relations. Rapid economic growth and increased urbanisation have intensified China’s industrial and domestic energy consumption, drastically increasing demand and overwhelming national supply capacities. Chinese foreign policy has responded by becoming more active in securing and protecting foreign energy resources and allowing Chinese companies more freedom and opportunities for investment abroad. Consequently, Chinese foreign investment and policies have become increasing sources of scrutiny and debate, typically focusing on their (presumed) intentions and the social, economic, environmental and political impacts they have on the rest of the world. Within this debate, a key issue has been China’s engagement with so-called pariah states. China has frequently received substantial international criticism for its unconditional engagement with such countries, often seen as a geopolitical pursuit of strategic national (energy) interests, unconcerned with international opprobrium. In the case of Myanmar, traditional security analyses interpret this as, at best, undermining (Western) international norms and, at worst, posing a direct challenge to international security. However, traditional security analyses rely on state-centric concepts of security, and tend to over-simply Sino-Myanmar relations and the dynamics which inform it. Conversely, implications for human security are overlooked; this is in part because human security remains poorly defined and also because there are questions regarding its utility. However, human security is a critical tool in delineating between state, corporate and ‘civilian’ interests, and how these cleavages shape the security environment and potential for instability in the region. iv This thesis takes a closer look at some of the entrenched and changing security dynamics shaping this Sino-Myanmar energy cooperation, drawing on an extensive literature in human security rarely applied in this context. This includes a brief review of human security and Sino-Myanmar relations, and is grounded in an empirical analysis of Chinese investment in Myanmar’s hydropower and oil and gas sectors. Ultimately, this thesis argues that, while insightful, many traditional interpretations of Sino-Myanmar energy cooperation overlook the security interests of those worst affected. Furthermore, that the worst excesses of Chinese companies in Myanmar are not unique to China, but common across all investors in the regime, Western or otherwise. / Graduate

Sjöfarten står idag inför allt strängare miljökrav. För att uppnå miljövänligare resultat har allt fler rederier börjat se sig om efter ett miljövänligare bränsle. Östersjön är ett stort handelsområde där striktare krav från SECA träder i kraft den 1 januari 2015. Fartyg med LNG-drift diskuteras flitigt som ett alternativt bränsle inom den svenska sjöfartsnärningen, då utsläppen av NOx, svavel och partiklar är mindre än tjockoljan (HFO). Ett av problemen med LNG i Sverige är att det i dagsläget inte finns ett tillräckligt utvecklat infrastrukturnät för flytande naturgas. I denna rapport har vi med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer kartlagt svenska aktörer inom LNGs infrastrukturutveckling och vad det är som hämmar utvecklingen. Vår analys av intervjuerna visade att utvecklingen bromsades av att ingen vågat ta första steget. Hamnarna vill inte bygga terminaler om det inte finns en marknad för distribution och rederierna vill inte bygga fartyg om det inte finns tillgänglighet av LNG. Det har också framkommit att intresset från den svenska staten har varit mycket svagt, näst intill obefintligt. Det finns även en del tomrum i de svenska regelverken kring hanteringen av LNG, vilket är en av faktorerna till att LNGs utveckling hämmas. / Shipping today faces stricter environmental requirements for pollution from vessels. Shipping companies have started to look for alternative fuel to achieve better environmental outcome. The Baltic Sea today is a major trading area for shipping . On 1 of January 2015 a new set of brand new and stricter regulation is getting implemented and these regulations are called SECA. Vessel running on LNG as an alternative fuel is today discussed extensively within the Swedish Maritime forum where emissions of NOx, sulfur and particles are less recipients than in heavy fuel oil (HFO). One of todays problems with a LNG distribution in Sweden are that the infrastructure is incomplete and outdated. This report has been built upon qualitative interviews with important actors within the Swedish maritime forum and also what impedes the development of the LNG’s infrastructure. The outcome of the interviews showed that the development has been slowed down because none within the Swedish martime forum have dared to take the first step. The ports does not want to develop terminals when there is no market demand and the shipping companies does not want to build vessel that runs on LNG when there is no market for distribution. Swedish governments involvement has been very weak, almost non-existing. There are also gaps in the Swedish regulations and restrictions of LNG cargo handling. This is aslo one of the factors that the development of LNG has been impeded.

Utilization Of Natural Gas, Optimization Of Cogeneration/ Combined Cycle Applications In Campus Environment

A computer program, called &ldquo / Cogeneration Design&quot / is developed using Visual Basic 6.0, for conceptually designing cogeneration power plants. Design is focused on power plants to be built in university campuses, where there is mainly heating, hot water, electricity and sometimes cooling demands. Middle East Technical University campus is considered as the primary working area. Before the conceptual design study, detailed information regarding description of the campus, infrastructure, annual electric, water and heat demand covering last 10 years, properties of existing heat plant including natural gas expenses and specifications of the steam distribution pipes and electricity grid are collected and examined in detail. Throughout the thesis, eight different natural gas fired cogeneration power plant designs are developed regarding different gas turbine and steam turbine configurations, for METU Campus, considering the Campus&#039 / properties described above, by using the &quot / Cogeneration Design&quot / program. Then, by means of a thermoeconomic optimization process, cost summary reports are prepared and the feasibility of the designed cogeneration power plants are discussed.

Gas Production From Hydrate Reservoirs

In this study / gas production by depressurization method from a hydrate reservoir containing free gas zone below the hydrate zone is numerically modeled through 3 dimensional, 3 phase, non-isothermal reservoir simulation. The endothermic nature of hydrate decomposition requires modeling to be non-isothermal / hence energy balance equations must be employed in the simulation process. TOUGH-Fx, the successor of the well known multipurpose reservoir simulator TOUGH2 (Pruess [24]) and its very first module TOUGH-Fx/Hydrate, both developed by Moridis et.al [23] at LBNL, are utilized to model production from a theoretical hydrate reservoir, which is first studied by Holder [11] and then by Moridis [22], for comparison purposes. The study involves 2 different reservoir models, one with 30% gas in the hydrate zone (case 1) and other one with 30% water in the hydrate zone (case 2). These models are further investigated for the effect of well-bore heating. The prominent results of the modeling study are: &amp / #8226 / In case 1, second dissociation front develops at the top of hydrate zone and most substantial methane release from the hydrate occurs there. &amp / #8226 / In case 2 (hydrate-water in the hydrate zone), because a second dissociation front at the top of hydrate zone could not fully develop due to high capillary pressure acting on liquid phase, a structure similar to ice lens formation is observed. &amp / #8226 / Initial cumulative replenishment (first 5 years) and the replenishment rate (first 3.5 years) are higher for case 2 because, production pressure drop is felt all over the reservoir due to low compressibility of water and more hydrate is decomposed. Compared to previous works of Holder [11] and Moridis [22], amount of released gas contribution within the first 3 years of production is significantly low which is primarily attributed to the specified high capillary pressure function.

Alternative ignition systems for CNG in diesel applications

Ignition and combustion enhancement of lean homogeneous mixtures offers the potential to simultaneously lower pollutant emissions and improve the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines. A single cylinder, high compression ratio (16.5:1), open chamber diesel engine has been converted to operate on homogenously charged compressed natural gas (CNG) with the aim of minimising pollutant emissions such as oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter and carbon dioxide. Three ignition systems were tested to examine how effectively they could ignite lean mixtures of CNG with the ultimate aim of achieving simultaneously high thermal efficiency and low oxides of nitrogen emissions. The ignition systems examined were spark ignition (SI), diesel pilot ignition (DPI) and hydrogen assisted jet ignition (HAJI). Irrespective of ignition system used, the efficiency of the engine operating on CNG was significantly reduced at part load compared to diesel. This was predominantly due to a greater amount of unburnt hydrocarbons, higher cycle-by-cycle variability, slow and partial burns and increased heat transfer to the walls. DPI and HAJI systems were able to extend the lean limit to lambda 2.7 and 3.3 respectively, however this did not result in efficiency gains over SI systems. HAJI proved to be superior to DPI with higher peak efficiency, lower carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulates, and significantly lower oxides of nitrogen in the absence of a locally rich ignition source.
