EXAMINING THE ROLE OF PERSONALITY, PEERS, AND THE TRANSITION TO COLLEGE ON SUBSTANCE USEBailey, Ursula Louise 01 January 2011 (has links)
It is well established that there is an increase in substance use among college students. In the literature, this increase in use has been attributed to different personality factors, such as sensation seeking. However, what has not received sufficient attention is the possibility that the new peer groups, afforded by the transition to college, introduce unique influence on the relationship between personality and substance use. The purposes of the current study were to explore whether personality predicted substance use across the transition to college whether peer substance use moderated that relationship.
The current study examined developmentally the relations among personality, peers, and substance use as students transitioned to college. It built upon previous work by disentangling how the multifaceted trait of impulsivity may interact with the aspects unique to the transition to college, such as dynamic peer groups and substance use behavior in different contexts. This study added to the literature as it was the first to examine negative urgency and its relation to peer influence. The results of the current study aid in understanding the development of substance use among college students and the environmental contexts likely to influence use across time.
Participants (N= 229) were assessed longitudinally in order to examine changes in substance use. The participants completed an array of measures that included personality measures (i.e. sensation seeking and negative urgency), a life history calendar of substance use, a measure of problematic alcohol use, and a questionnaire examining the substance use of peers.
The current study suggests differences in the way that sensation seeking and negative urgency predict alcohol use and problematic drinking across the transition to college and demonstrated that peers’ drinking had a moderating effect on the relationship between personality and drinking during particular times during the transition to college.

Progressive and Reactionary Attitudes towards Technology in Twentieth Century Literature, 1937-2013Potts, Michael Gordon Ralph January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis I trace the origins, morphology, and attributes of a particular strain of anti-materialism in the Western literary and cultural imagination of the second half of the twentieth
century. With reference to previous work done on this topic I discuss how this anti-materialism rejects materialistic and rationalistic aspects of modernity and emphasises instead the
importance of non-material aspects of society such as cultural integrity and cohesion, tradition, and instinct. I demonstrate that this strain relies on what Raymond Williams termed “organic form”, the fallacious belief that human society can and should follow a set of rules which can be objectively deducted from nature and I argue that it should be placed within the context of a long established anti-enlightenment tradition.
Through an analysis of such writers as George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, JRR Tolkien, Edward Abbey, James Howard Kunstler, Chuck Palahniuk, Brian Aldiss and others I show how a common feature of this anti-materialism is concern and anxiety over the potentially destabilising or degenerative effects of life in a technologically advanced society where mechanisation, mass production, and scientific advances have brought relative comfort and prosperity to most people in society and hence I refer to this particular strain of anti-materialism as anti-technologism. More specifically, I am interested in this thesis
with examining the way in which this reaction allows for a curious confluence and convergence of progressive and reactionary tendencies. I argue that anti-technologism is a distinct and detectable mood in Western literature, and I trace its origins and influences. Without claiming to provide a functionalist analysis, I consider the role of anti-technologism in Western literature which I see as broadly facilitating an exploration and discussion of themes of cultural vitality and
cohesion in the increasingly cosmopolitan and technologically advanced societies of the West.

A Matter of Choice- Tertiary Student Term Time Employment: An Investigation of New Zealand Domestic and Chinese International StudentsWang, Xiaofeng January 2011 (has links)
Term time employment of tertiary students has increased dramatically following funding policy changes in the global Higher Education sector. Taking a comparative approach, this study of students at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, investigates the decision to work during the academic term, the characteristics of such employment, and the perceived impacts on the university experiences of New Zealand domestic and Chinese international students.
The study revealed similarities and differences between the two largest student populations. Compared to their New Zealand peers, Chinese international students are less likely to take term time employment. Among those who have worked, New Zealand domestic students do so for financial reasons, while Chinese international students value the work experience in the host country. Chinese international students receive much lower wages and tend to have shorter employment durations. In terms of perceived impacts, both New Zealand domestic and Chinese international students express a generally positive attitude towards their employment decisions, with a limited but clear awareness of the negative impacts. Interestingly, for those who have never worked, Chinese international students indicate a much stronger willingness to join the student workforce in the future. New Zealand domestic students, however, are much less likely to work if they can afford not to.
This research provides empirical information about international students’ term time employment in the New Zealand context. Specific advice and mentoring services are needed at both university and government levels to provide ‘a more safe and supportive’ employment environment, especially for international students.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF THE HUMAN INFERIOR VENA CAVA DURING LOWER BODY NEGATIVE PRESSUREPothini, Venu Madhav 01 January 2004 (has links)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was used to determine changes in the size of the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) as a result of blood pooling induced by lower body negative pressure (LBNP). Images of the IVC of supine human subjects (10 males, 10 females) were obtained under four conditions: 1) steady-state 0 mmHg LBNP, 2) steady-state –35 mmHg LBNP, 3) ramping from 0 to –35 mmHg LBNP, 4) ramping from –35 to 0 mmHg LBNP. Volumes for a given IVC segment were obtained under the first two conditions during both end inspiration and end expiration breath-holds. Inferior Vena Cava widths were measured under all four conditions at the levels of portal entry and portal exit. The IVC volume for men and women combined decreased 41% due to LBNP (p andlt; 1.02 x 10-9). The IVC was 64.4% wider at portal exit than at portal entry in men (p andlt; 0.0003). Lower Body Negative Pressure induced a decrease in men's vena cava width up to 46% at portal exit and up to 62% at portal entry. Supported by NASA EPSCoR WKU 522611 and NIH GCRC MO1 RR262.

Raising the memory of nature : animals, nonidentity and enlightenment thought.Krebber, André January 2015 (has links)
Society’s current experience of nature is ambiguous. Just as nature proves severely affected by human activities and vulnerable, it also appears threatening to us. Although the changes in nature have been perceived for long as an ecological crisis, this experience and the challenges it provides have remained persistently exigent over the last four decades. As a consequence, our epistemological understanding of nature and culture as separate entities has been inherently shaken. My study is located among ecocritical attempts to negotiate these experiences. Immanent critiques of E. O. Wilson’s and Bruno Latour’s epistemologies exemplify how we cannot escape the dualism in society’s relationship to nature by simply declaring nature’s and culture’s unity. Relying on the social philosophy of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, I instead consider the dualism as historically both true and false, and argue that instrumental reason provides a socio-psychological barrier to transcending the way Western society relates to nature. Central to the situation’s perpetuation is the confidence that the object of knowledge can be adequately and steadily identified in knowledge. Based on Adorno’s negative dialectics, I develop a model of cognition that works through the dualism within the knowing subject and in its relation to animals. This model is substantiated in the context of Enlightenment thought. A reconstruction of the development of René Descartes’ (1596–1650) epistemology in relation to his philosophy of nature and the place of animals within it shows the animal as particularly resistant to Descartes’ conceptual identification. In the writings on animal behaviour of Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694–1768) this resistance further manifests as a self-mediation of animals, which denotes the limits to their conceptual assimilation. Maria Sibylla Merian’s (1647–1717) aesthetically mediated insect studies capture this tension between species commonalities and unique particularities, and represent the single specimens as nonidentical individuals. Through critical engagement with these works, my study develops a cognitive approach to nature that preserves its object as qualitatively mediated between universal and particular properties, and inherently nonidentical. Simultaneously, it recovers the animal as an object of knowledge particularly resistant to identificatory thought. Consolidating these two insights, aesthetic mediation of animals provides an experience that reveals to the subject its limited power over the objects and which is capable of raising the memory of nature within the subject.

Nuclear Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor Regulation of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Dormancy/RecurrenceLi, Shenduo January 2014 (has links)
<p>Chemotherapy remains the only available treatment for triple-negative (TN) breast cancer. Although some TN breast cancers respond initially to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the majority of patients die within three years of treatment due to recurrent tumor growth. Developing ex vivo models for TN breast cancer recurrence and defining responsible molecules will be crucial to developing effective combination therapies for TN breast cancer patients. We have developed an in vitro model of TN breast cancer dormancy/recurrence. Short-term exposure of tumor cells to chemotherapy at clinically relevant doses enriches for a dormant tumor cell population. Several days after removing chemotherapy, dormant tumor cells regain proliferative ability and establish colonies, resembling tumor recurrence. Tumor cells from "recurrent" colonies exhibit increased chemotherapy resistance, resembling therapy resistance of recurrent tumors in patients. Furthermore, we identify a novel signaling axis [nuclear bFGF/DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK)] supported by chemotherapy-enriched dormant TN breast cancer cells. This signaling axis drives accelerated DNA repair in chemo-residual TN breast cancer cells. Targeting this axis with either with a bFGF shRNA or DNA-PK small molecule inhibitor blocks recurrent colony formation. Using the Oncomine gene expression database, we found that bFGF expression in tumor samples from TN breast cancer patients predicts five year tumor recurrence following neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment. Finally, we demonstrate that recurrent tumor cells exhibit increased invasiveness, reflecting the aggressive behavior of recurrent tumors in patients. Collectively, these studies identify a novel signaling axis in TN breast cancer that likely contributes to tumor recurrence and provide molecular targets for developing future therapeutics against TN breast cancer.</p> / Dissertation

Optical metamaterials are artificial media that exhibit new properties from structuring on the nanometric scale. One of the main researches in metamaterials investigates materials with negative refractive index, which can allow the development of perfect lens and other exciting potential applications. In this thesis, we theoretically study the properties of negative-index optical fishnet metamaterials, especially the origin of their negative-valued refractive index, and also associated theoretical problems. The thesis can be divided into 4 parts. In the first part we study the light scattering at an interface between air and a semi-infinite fishnet metamaterial. With a fully-vectorial numerical method, we calculate the scattering coefficients of the interface and find that the energy transport inside the fishnet is due to a single Bloch mode, the fundamental one. Based on the single-interface scattering coefficients and the effective index of this Bloch mode we propose a new algorithm for retrieving effective optical parameters of the metamaterial. The approach emphasizes the key role played by the fundamental Bloch mode and provides retrieved parameters that are more accurate or stable than those obtained by classical methods based only on light reflection and transmission through finite-thickness metamaterial slabs. Due to the importance of the fundamental Bloch mode in the light transport in metamaterials, in the second part, based on the Bloch mode orthogonality we derive closed-form expressions for the scattering coefficients at an interface between two periodic media with slightly different geometrical parameters, which is a computationally demanding electromagnetic problem. We show that the analytical expressions are very accurate for various geometries, including dielectric waveguides and metallic metamaterials. Thus they can be useful for designing and engineering stacks of periodic structures. As shown in the first part, the fundamental Bloch mode is central to explain the negative refraction phenomenon in fishnet metamaterials. In the third part, we derive an accurate semi-analytical model for the complex propagation constant of the fishnet fundamental Bloch mode. This is achieved by analyzing light propagation and scattering inside the fishnet. The model shows that the origin of broad-band negative index of fishnets can be mainly understood as a plasmon resonance in the transversal metal-insulator-metal (MIM) channels. The plasmon resonance enhances the 'magnetic' response of fishnet and the losses associated to this resonance can be compensated by including gain in the dielectric layers of the fishnet. Furthermore, the model allows an easy and precise geometrical tailoring of fishnet metamaterials. As shown in the third part, it is the plasmon resonance in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures that induces the negative index of fishnet metamaterials. In the last part, we study the asymptotic behavior of 3D MIM nanoresonators, as the resonator size is shrunk below the diffraction limit. In particular we show that the quality factor increases from 10 to 100 when the resonator volume is scaled down from (λ/2n)3 to (λ/50)3. We provide a comprehensive study with a semi-analytical Fabry-Perot model. The model remains accurate over the whole size scale even in the quasi-static regime for which retardation effects are not expected. This important and counterintuitive result indicates that both localized plasmon resonances in nanoparticles and delocalized resonance in elongated plasmonic nanowires can be possibly understood as a wave-retardation based antenna problem.

The Prognostic Impact of Proliferation Markers in Breast Cancer with Emphasis on Cyclin B1 and PPH3Koliadi, Anthoula January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the prognostic role of the proliferation markers cyclin B1 and Phosphorylated Histone 3 (PPH3) in breast cancer (BC). In paper I we used an experimental study design, we compared women dying early from their BC with women free from relapse more than eight years after initial diagnosis. All women had stage I, node-negative and hormone receptor positive disease. None had received adjuvant chemotherapy. We found that low-risk node negative patients with high expression of cyclin B1 had a significantly worse outcome than patients with low expression of cyclin B1. In paper II a population-based case control study was performed to further investigate the prognostic value of cyclin B1. One hundred and ninety women who died from BC were defined as cases and 190 women alive at the time for the corresponding case’s death were defined as controls. Inclusion criteria were tumor size 50 mm, no lymph node metastases, and no adjuvant chemotherapy. Two investigators evaluated the stainings independently. Cyclin B1 was found to be a prognostic factor for BC death that could identify high-risk patients with a good to very good reproducibility. Paper III aimed to investigate the role of proliferation in male breast cancer (MBC). One hundred and ninety-seven MBC tumors were stained for cyclin A, B1, D1 and Ki67. Overexpression of cyclin A and B1 and elevated mitotic count were predictive of breast cancer death. Ki67 was re-evaluated and different cut-offs were used, but no prognostic value could be demonstrated. On the other hand high levels of cyclin D1 were associated with better outcome in MBC. In paper IV we applied the immunohistochemichal panel suggested from international guidelines to the same patient material as in paper II, to discriminate luminal A from luminal B BC. We wanted to evaluate if different cut-off values of Ki67, cyclin A or B1 could more clearly separate luminal A from B. Cyclin A, B1 and Ki67 (cut-off 20%) could detect difference in outcome between these subtypes with cyclin A showing greater prognostic value. The aim of paper V was to examine the prognostic role of PPH3 compared to the proliferation markers Ki67, cyclin A and cyclin B1 with focus on ER positive disease. PPH3 was found to be a prognostic factor for breast cancer death but in the multivariate analysis including all proliferation markers, only cyclin A remained a prognostic factor. Finally, we conclude that both cyclin B1 and PPH3 are prognostic factors for breast cancer death, but are outperformed by cyclin A in ER positive patients. In male breast cancer prognostic factors need to be further studied.

The aim of this study was to investigate and describe the description of negative peer pressure by grade nine learners. The study took place within the context of adolescence, which is often described as a phase where negative peer pressure plays a significant role in the lives of adolescents. A literature study on the topic showed that peer pressure is a complex phenomenon that is experienced by all adolescents at some point. Literature also indicated that the voice of adolescents regarding their own unique and subjective description of negative peer pressure has not been recorded often enough.
It became evident that especially grade nine learners are vulnerable to negative peer pressure. This grade or age group forms part of the middle adolescent phase, which is especially characterised by the forming of an own identity. The forming of an own identity is influenced by the different develop-mental tasks that are associated with adolescence, namely their emotional, cognitive, moral and social development. During this developmental phase the membership of a peer group becomes increasingly important and exclusion from the group is feared. This fear often leads to conforming to negative group norms and behaviour. From this context, the study is necessary.
The researcher has undertaken a qualitative, phenomenological study, during which unstructured interviews were conducted with twelve grade nine learners from public high schools in the Drakenstein area of the Boland, Western Cape. These interviews were transcribed and the data analysed so that specific themes concerning negative peer pressure could be identified. From these empirical findings it was evident that the mutual relationships of the participants as well as the dynamics and norms within their respective groups, impacted severely on their description of negative peer pressure.
Group formation in the middle adolescent years seems to be a complex process. It appears as if the smaller, more intimate group of friends can protect adolescents against negative peer pressure on the one hand, but can also exert pressure on group members to partake in negative activities. Therefore smaller groups often change as members move in and out of the group to find a group where they feel at home.
According to the participants, conforming to negative behaviour and norms takes place more readily in the bigger or wider and more diverse peer group. Within these bigger groups it is easier for individuals to lose their identity, and therefore adolescents that are still in search of a personal identity and value system, give in to negative pressure and behaviour easier. A wide range of causes are named for this giving in to pressure, but according to the participants, their need for acceptance and recognition by the peer group as well as the accompanying fear of exclusion are the most important causes.
From the study it was further evident that the relationships that adolescents find themselves in, play a deciding role in their description of negative peer pressure. The participants indicated that their relationship with their parents, their peer group, as well as the relationship with themselves, all influence their ability to handle negative peer pressure.
From these findings the description of participants of negative peer pressure is explained in full.
