Public/Private Construction: The Photographic Album of Nellie L. McClungWilson, Lara Jane 12 November 2013 (has links)
The album of Nellie Letitia Mooney McClung (1873-1951) is housed in the British
Columbia Archives' Visual Records and is the only photographic album in the McClung
Papers. This thesis proposes to contextualize the album within women's photographic history
in general, and McClung's photographic practice in particular.
The following points will be argued: first, photo albums are complex socio-historical
documents which provide insight into gender and class constructions; second, late nineteenth
and early twentieth century album-making was considered a female pursuit linked to the
domestic sphere; third, the Nellie McClung album dates primarily from 1896-1911, the years
McClung lived with her husband, Wesley, and children in Manitou, Manitoba; and fourth, I
propose that a number of the album's photos are not only private mementos, but also public
documents, having been used or considered as illustrations and advertisements for works
written by or about Nellie McClung in these years. / Graduate / 0377 / 0334

The career of South African soprano Nellie du Toit, born 1929Mossolow, Alexandra Xenia Sabina 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M. Mus.)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Who is Nellie du Toit and what is the extent of her career as singer and voice teacher? The void
in South African historiography in respect to the life and work of South African performing
artists gave rise to investigate the career of Nellie du Toit. Known as one of South Africa’s most
illustrious opera singers of the 1960’s and 1970’s, who made her career exclusively in South
Africa, she is regarded as one of the most sought after voice teachers. Her career as singer
spanned almost three decades. As voice teacher her career of over forty years is still ongoing.
This study traces her biographical details chronologically beginning with her youth years in a
very musical family. Her full-time music studies took place at the South African College of
Music in Cape Town, from 1950 to 1952. Here her singing teacher Madame Adelheid Armhold
and Gregorio Fiasconaro, head of the Opera School, were influential in laying the foundations
for her career. After a period of over a year in England Du Toit was one of several young South
African singers to contribute to pioneering opera in South Africa, often sung in the vernacular.
Du Toit sang in forty-five opera seasons for the Provincial Arts Councils in the seventeen years
between 1963 and 1979, when her opera career ended. In 1986 she returned to the opera stage as
the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. This was also her final farewell as
opera singer. The title role in Madama Butterfly can be regarded as her hallmark. Her stunning
portrayal of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor was regarded as a mile stone in South African opera
history, as was her interpretation of Jenůfa. She was also hailed as a Mozart singer. Not only was
she regarded as one of the world’s best “Butterflies” at the International Madame Butterfly
Competition in Japan in 1970, but has she also been awarded three Nederburg Opera Prizes.
Apart from opera, Du Toit gave numerous recitals of classical and light classical music, regularly
sang in orchestral concerts and oratorio and was active as broadcasting artist. Her work as voice
teacher always ran parallel to her singing activities. Her academic career at the Universities at
Stellenbosch and Cape Town spanned fourteen years: from 1980 to 1993.
Nellie du Toit’s achievements in music were laureated with the Medal of Honour from the
Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986 and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of
Stellenbosch in 1998.
dekades gestrek. Haar loopbaan as sangpedagoog, ná meer as veertig jaar, gaan steeds voort.
Hierdie studie ondersoek haar lewe en loopbaan chronologies, beginnende met haar jeugjare in ʼn
baie musikale gesin.
Dit was ook haar finale vaarwel as operasangeres.
Haar merkwaardige
uitbeelding van Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor is beskou as ʼn mylpaal in die Suid-Afrikaanse
operageskiedenis. Sy was ook hoog aangeskryf as
Mozart-sangeres.
Suid-Afrika drie Nederburg Operapryse ingepalm.
en as uitsaaikunstenaar opgetree. Naas haar loopbaan as uitvoerder het haar aktiwiteite as
sangpedagoog byna ononderbroke voortgegaan.

Norte que murieron en las batallas. El análisis se centrará en la híbridez genérica del texto;

abstract: ABSTRACT
The analytical sensitivity of Nellie Campobello allows her to perceive and draw several contexts into her fiction. Her work offers the reader a glimpse of the subtle connections between the individual experience and the social milieu that make up history. In the two editions of Cartucho (1931 and 1940) the reader encounters the Mexican Revolution as a plausible setting. By transferring this context into fiction, the author deals with core social matters that fostered the disfunctionality of Mexican society, at the time the novel was written. Furthermore, her intuition allows her to depict in her literary work many aspects of dehumanization that are timeless and universal. This depth of social cognition is expressed freely, producing a literary style that communicates a modern worldview.
Therefore, a critical analysis of the book should supersede historical facts to discern the expression of an object of ethical appreciation. The active reading of Cartucho forces us to appreciate the precise aesthetic form that communicates, through a plurality of voices, history to reconfigure -through discourse- diverse social contexts that are accessible, identifiable and pertinent to readers from different epochs. This is perhaps the value of the book for the social sciences. However, our study seeks to understand the social and historic minutiae of the text to better equip the reader to achieve an ethical catharsis through the reading of fiction. We believe that it is only when the reader surpasses the historic level of discourse that he or she can fully identify himself or herself with the characters, thus restoring their humanity and at the same time becoming more fully human.
Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2014

Dělnické hnutí jako prostředek boje za rovnoprávnost černochů v Minnesotě: Aktivismus Nellie Stone Johnson / Labor Movement in Minnesota as a Means of Struggle for Equality of African Americans in Minnesota: Activism of Nellie Stone JohnsonNavrátilová, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis Labor Movement as a Means of Struggle for Equality of African Americans in Minnesota: Activism of Nellie Stone Johnson analyzes the role of the Labor Movement in a struggle for equality of African Americans in a state that belongs on the periphery of academic research of African American population of the United States of America. In the first two chapters, the study uses the probe method, which analyzes the manifestations of the Labor Movement and the Civil Rights Movement of the African Americans in Minnesota within a historical context. In case of both movements, key influences and actors are primarily identified. The second chapter then analyzes in more detail the impact of racism and discrimination on the Labor Movement's development, and vice versa, the struggle of the Labor Movement to overcome racial segregation. In the third chapter, the case study relies on the biographical method and the oral history method. Using these methods, this chapter constructs a specific story of activist Nellie Stone Johnson, whose life demonstrates the importance of combining quality education with economic self-sufficiency for the success of the African American struggle for racial equality in Minnesota. Nellie Stone Johnson came from a farming background that was traditional for Minnesota...
