Evaluation of the friction generated by self-ligating and conventional bracket-systems in various bracket-archwire combinations: An in vitro study

Magister Chirurgiae Dentium - MChD (Orthodontics) / The aim of the study is to compare the frictional resistance generated between two types of self-ligating brackets; Smart-Clip Metal SL (3M Unitek) and Damon Clear SL (Ormco), with conventional stainless steel brackets, Victory Series (3M Unitek) when coupled with various stainless steel and nickel-titanium archwires. Materials and Methods: All brackets had a 0.022" slot and tested using three archwires: 0.016" nickel-titanium, 0.019 x 0.025" nickel-titanium and 0.019 x 0.025" stainless steel archwires. Friction was evaluated for the upper right quadrant of the typodont. For each testing procedure, new brackets and archwire was employed to eliminate the influence of wear. Results: The mean results showed that the Smart-Clip self-ligating brackets generated significantly lower friction than both the Damon Clear self-ligating brackets and Victory Series brackets. However, the analysis of the various bracket-archwire combinations displayed that Damon Clear SL brackets generated the lowest friction when tested with 0.016" round nickeltitanium archwire and significantly higher friction than Smart-Clip and Victory Series brackets when tested with 0.019 x 0.025" stainless steel rectangular archwires. All brackets showed higher frictional forces as the wire size increased. Clinical relevance: The production of high levels of friction during orthodontic sliding mechanics presents a clinical challenge to the orthodontists. The generation of high levels of friction may reduce the effectiveness of the mechanics, decrease tooth movement efficiency and further complicate anchorage control. The amount of friction is variable in the orthodontic system and can be altered somewhat by the orthodontist's choices.

Combinatorial Study Of Hydrogen Storage Alloys

A combinatorial study was carried out for hydrogen storage alloys which involve processes similar to those normally used in their fabrication. The study utilized a single sample of combined elemental (or compound) powders which were milled and consolidated into a bulk form and subsequently deformed to heavy strains. Material library was obtained in a post annealing treatment carried out at elevated temperatures which brings about solid state reactions between the powders yielding equilibrium phases in the respective alloy system. A sample comprising the material library was then pulverized and screened for hydrogen storage composition. X-ray diffraction was used as a screening tool, the sample having been examined both in as-processed and hydrogenated state. The method was successfully applied to Mg-Ni, and Mg-Ni-Ti yielding the well known Mg2Ni as the storage composition. It is concluded that partitioning of the alloy system into regions of similar solidus temperature would be required to enrich the material library.

Microstructure Evolution in Laser Deposited Nickel-Titanium-Carbon in situ Metal Matrix Composite

Ni/TiC metal matrix composites have been processed using the laser engineered net shaping (LENS) process. As nickel does not form an equilibrium carbide phase, addition of a strong carbide former in the form of titanium reinforces the nickel matrix resulting in a promising hybrid material for both surface engineering as well as high temperature structural applications. Changing the relative amounts of titanium and carbon in the nickel matrix, relatively low volume fraction of refined homogeneously distributed carbide precipitates, formation of in-situ carbide precipitates and the microstructural changes are investigated. The composites have been characterized in detail using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (including energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) mapping and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)), Auger electron spectroscopy, and transmission (including high resolution) electron microscopy. Both primary and eutectic titanium carbides, observed in this composite, exhibited the fcc-TiC structure (NaCl-type). Details of the orientation relationship between Ni and TiC have been studied using SEM-EBSD and high resolution TEM. The results of micro-hardness and tribology tests indicate that these composites have a relatively high hardness and a steady-state friction coefficient of ~0.5, both of which are improvements in comparison to LENS deposited pure Ni.

Experimental study of NiTi alloy under shear loading over a large range of strain rates / Etude expérimentale de tôles en Ni-Ti sous cisaillement plan simple et sous plusieurs vitesses de déformation

Ce travail décrit une étude expérimentale sur des tôles en Ni-Ti à température ambiante en cisaillement plan simple, et pour des vitesses de déformation de 10-4 à 103/s. En quasi-statique (10-4-10-2/s), la mesure optique du champ de déplacement est indispensable à cause du faible déplacement (0.3mm). Des essais à vitesse de déformation intermédiaire (10-1-101/s) ont été réalisés avec la Machine MTS modifiée, capable d'aller à 300mm/s. Une caméra rapide est nécessaire pour suivre ces tests. Enfin, des barres de Hopkinson sont utilisées pour les essais à haute vitesse (102-103/s).Les efforts se sont concentrés sur la méthodologie afin d'explorer les limites expérimentales. Au niveau mécanique, des efforts ont été apportés sur la conception des montages des mors pour combiner des exigences contradictoires. Au niveau mesure, des caméras optiques fonctionnant jusqu'à 5M images/s ont été utilisées. La texture des images, la peinture, la lumière, la taille d'élément et l'incertitude sont analysées. De plus, la caméra infrarouge est utilisée pour confirmer l'observation optique sous faibles vitesses de déformation.Finalement, des essais ont été réalisés pour 7 ordres de grandeurs de la vitesse de déformation, avec identification de la relation contrainte-déformation et observation de l'évolution de la bande de transformation. On observe : (i) Une augmentation de la contrainte avec la vitesse de déformation. (ii) Un champ de déformation non homogène, même en faible vitesse, avec une bande à 10 degrés par rapport à la direction de cisaillement. (iii) Deux bandes séparées à haute vitesse (102/s), ce qui indique que la bande de localisation dépend de la vitesse de chargement. / This work describes an experimental study on a NiTi alloy at the ambient temperature (Pseudoelastic behavior) under the double in-plane shear loading over strain rates from 10-4 to 103/s. Under quasi-static loadings (10-4-10-2/s), the optical full-field measurement is necessary because of the very small displacement (0.3mm). The intermediate loading rates (10-1-101/s) are realized with a modified MTS machine able to load at 300mm/s. Moreover, a high-speed camera is needed to follow such tests. Finally, the Split Hopkinson bars are used to perform tests at impact loading rates (102-103/s).The main effort has been made on the methodological study to explore the experimental possibility. For the mechanical level, the attention has been paid on the design of the clamping system to cope with the contradictory requirements. For the measuring level, different optical cameras with sampling rate till to 5M frames/second are used. The texture, the painting, the lightening, the element size and the uncertainty are analyzed. Furthermore, an infrared camera was used at lower loading rates to confirm the DIC measurement.The tests are continually performed over 7 decades of the strain rate. The nominal stress-strain curves and the detailed observation of the transformation band evolution are measured. The main findings are as follows: (i) Regular stress increase with the strain rate; (ii) an inhomogeneous strain field under in-plane shear condition, even at very low strain rates, with a band at 10 degrees from the shear direction under lower strain rates. (iii) Two separated bands at the strain rate of 102/s, which suggests that the localized transformation bands are rate dependent.

Interactions mécanique-oxydation à haute température dans l'alliage 600 : application à la fissuration dans le milieu primaire des réacteurs nucléaires à eau sous pression

La fissuration intergranulaire par corrosion sous contrainte affecte depuis plusieurs décennies certaines pièces en alliage 600 (NC15FE) des réacteurs nucléaires à eau sous pression, telles que les tubes de générateur de vapeur et les manchettes d'adaptateur pour couvercle de cuve, exposées pendant plusieurs dizaines de milliers d'heures au milieu primaire (eau pure désaérée, additionnée d'hydrogène, de bore et de lithium entre 290 et 325°C). L'objectif de l'étude est une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes responsables de la fissuration, en particulier des interactions entre les sollicitations mécaniques locales et les effets d'environnement liés à la présence d'un milieu oxydant. Des essais de propagation de fissure sur éprouvettes CT ont été réalisés en fatigue continue et en fatigue fluage. L'analyse des résultats a porté sur les sollicitations mécaniques locales (calcul par éléments finis), les modes d'oxydation (expertises par microscopie électronique en transmission) et les interactions entre l'environnement et le comportement mécanique du matériau (essais sur produit mince). La propagation de fissure intergranulaire à 550°C sous différentes pressions partielles d'oxygène a été reliée à un endommagement de fluage. La formation d'oxydes riches en nickel et/ou en fer accélère le fluage dislocation à proximité de la surface. Elle étend alors le domaine de rupture intergranulaire vers les vitesses de déformation locales plus élevées imposées en fatigue continue. Des résultats analogues ont été obtenus à 400°C. Les essais en présence d'eau désaérée (vapeur à 400°C, milieu primaire à 320°C) ont également conduit à une propagation de fissure intergranulaire et à la formation d'oxydes riches en nickel. Les faciès de rupture sont identiques à ceux obtenus en corrosion sous contrainte. Une activation locale du fluage dislocation par les réactions d'oxydation est également envisagée pour rendre compte des résultats expérimentaux.
