Hydén, Malin January 2009 (has links)

You could say that the Swedish artist Felix Gmelin in his art uses media to get closer or further away from what we consider to be the reality and also truth. The purpose of this study is to discuss what this means for the intention of his art works. The starting point is my own aesthetic experience of his painting and the installations A Gentleman’s agreement (1996), Farbtest, Die Rothe Fahne II (2003) and Tools and Grammar 2.5 (2007). Each of these works of art consists of different kinds of prefabricated material such as articles, films and documents. These kinds of material are often considered to stand in the way of the aesthetic experience, maybe because they are supposed to be closer to reality and therefore to truth. The thesis of this study is that the truth in art is inscribed in the aesthetic framework of each art piece and also in the technical support it uses. If for example the support consists of an investigative journalist’s documentary research, in Rosalind Krauss’ description, the truth might be found in the authenticity of the documentary material. If the technical support has to do with sampling instead, as in the re-use of existing materials to create new works of art, the truth can probably not be found in the different pieces of material but in the work ofart in itself. It does not matter then if the different pieces of material it consists of is traditionally considered unaesthetic. The conclusion of this study is that Gmelin’s Gentleman’s agreement, Farbtest, Die Rothe Fahne II and Tools and Grammar 2.5 actually discuss what truth is and if there is an aesthetic truth.

Rodríguez Lizana, Pablo January 2014 (has links)

Building and burning bridges: a study of social capital and disaster vulnerability in Upper St'át'imc Territory including Lillooet, British Columbia

Bhopalsingh, Lisa Ann 05 1900 (has links)
Through the analysis of relationships between aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities in Upper St'at'imc Territory in British Columbia, this thesis illustrates how bridging and bonding forms of social capital affect vulnerability and cooperation to prepare for disasters in communities characterised by cultural conflict. Social capital is based upon networks of trust and reciprocity, which enable individuals to cooperate to achieve shared goals. In Upper St'at'imc Territory, people are most likely to have close relationships or bonds with those from the same cultural background. The absence of inter-cultural bonds means that bridges linking those less well known to each other (from each culture) are necessary to facilitate cooperation. However, there are few arenas that enable the formation of bridges between aboriginals and non-aboriginals. Pre-existing patterns of social capital between aboriginals and non-aboriginals were played out in BC Hydro's Exercise "Bridge River", a simulation exercise to prepare for a potential dam incident affecting downstream communities. Lack of bridges between the cultures was highlighted by low levels of cultural interaction during the exercise and the establishment of separate emergency operations centers. Nevertheless, the exercise resulted in some aboriginals and non-aboriginals coming into contact with each other and building new bridges. Unfortunately opportunities for strengthening these bridges through regular cultural interaction are limited. This is due to cultural divisions in membership of emergency preparedness organisations as well as wider social and employment networks. The exercise reinforced the strong bonds that enable non-aboriginal emergency responders to work well together. The benefits of these strong bonds are restricted if they result in excluding aboriginal participation in emergency response organisations. Exercise "Bridge River" organisers were unaware of the strong bonds among non-aboriginal emergency responders. This affected their ability to anticipate how these bonds were used during the exercise and resulted in delaying the process. Social capital is essentially a neutral phenomenon, how it is used determines whether or not it is a destructive weapon or a constructive tool for building disaster resilient communities. Nevertheless, social capital can be easily destroyed and bridges burnt by conflict and lack of trust between cultural groups. Understanding a community's social capital will enhance disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts. Inter-cultural social capital produced in one arena can be used to increase cooperation in disaster preparedness. At the same time, disaster preparedness activities can be used as a foundation to strengthen and build bridges between cultures.

The solo cello music of Benjamin Britten : an analysis : First cello suite, op. 72, Second cello suite, op. 80, Third cello suite, op. 87, and Tema Sacher

Fan, Chia-Lin January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to recognize the unique character of Benjamin Britten's writing for cello and to exhibit his exceptional contribution to the cello repertory. Britten made a significant contribution to the cello repertory with his six cello works: Sonata. for Cello and Piano in C, Op. 65, Cello Symphony, Op. 68, The Three Cello Suites, Op. 72, Op. 80, Op. 87, and Tema `Sacher . However, many of these compositions are underperformed and overlooked by today's performers. This disregard by the general public for Britten's cello works may be because of the interest in other extreme compositional styles employed by several other composers in the 20th century. While Britten's contemporaries focused on extremely inventive methods of writing, Britten focused on his own renovation of the traditional elements. This study focused on Benjamin Britten's four solo cello works: The Three Cello Suites, Op. 72, Op. 80, Op. 87, and Tema `Sacher'. It began with a biographical overview of Benjamin Britten's life, his writing philosophy, and the way it influenced his compositional process. This study then delved into the depth of the three solo cello suites, Tema `Sacher', and concluded with a summary of the analysis. Each of the works were examined and analyzed according to Britten's use of the concept of duality. The dual elements of rhythm/tempo/meter, motive, key/tonality/modality, form, and texture were analyzed in details. This study analyzed every movement based on its application of those elements. Excerpts of music were also provided to illustrate with the analysis. This study hopes to allow the public to rediscover the ingenious writing Benjamin Britten achieved and to encourage today's cellists to recognize Britten's importance as a composer in the history of cello composition. / School of Music

Tapia Valdivia, Dominique January 2015 (has links)
