Mobilamp : How a product design can facilitate the everyday life of urban nomads

Diers, Sophie January 2022 (has links)
Due to various societal changes such as globalization, urbanization and connectivity, new lifestyles, such as that of urban nomads, are becoming more common and relevant. Therefore, this study observes and analyzes this target group from a critical and multidisciplinary perspective. Urban nomads can be defined as a collective group of people who live and work in urban areas. They do not reside permanently in one place but move frequently within urban locations. Minimalism as part of low-consumption lifestyles and the concept of mobility, which form the core of the urban nomads‘ mindset, are examined in detail. The focus of the research is the relationship of urban nomads to material possessions and their meaning. Based on this, the thesis aims to generate criteria and requirements for a product design from the perspective of design, which meets the needs of urban nomads and simplifies their everyday life. Through a people-centered approach and the collaborative application of different methods, the urban nomads are placed in the focus of the innovation process and are actively involved in the process. The thesis results in the development of a transportable and multifunctional lamp (Mobilamp), which is realized in the form of a prototype based on the generated criteria from the research. The product design is considered as an example and analyzes in which way needs can be satisfied and through which usage situations the daily life of urban nomads can be facilitated. The aspect of sustainability in the consumption behavior of the target group is also critically analyzed and evaluated through the product.

The agrarian question in Iraq

Mayer, Philip January 1944 (has links)
The first part of the thesis is concerned with questions arising from the dual society of "tribesmen and townsmen", as the distinction is often briefly but inaccurately described. Nearly two thirds of the rural population and more than half of the total population may be regarded as having their social centre of gravity still in some form or other of tribal organisation. 1. British policy towards the tribes, as it shaped at first after the occupation of the country during the last war, stood in contradiction to the axiom which had been common to all the changing patterns of Turkish tribal policy. Far from being intent on destroying tribalism, it favoured its preservation. But the experiment in indirect administration of tribal areas came to an end in 1920. In some districts conditions forbade its introduction, in others its introduction courted failure. With the establishment of the provisional Arab Government the emphasis shifted back towards the bureaucratic administration of tribal areas. With the assistance of the British Royal Air Force, the establishment of direct administration in the outlying districts proceeded steadily. After the release from the Mandate, the Iraqi army proved its ability to act efficiently in face of serious tribal opposition. The ascendancy of the central Government faces tribalism with difficult problems of re-adjustment.

Nomadic geography : pastoral environments in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Sternberg, Troy January 2009 (has links)
Pastoralism on the Mongolian steppe encompasses limited physical resources and evolving anthropogenic influences. Little-studied, the Inner Asian region encounters changing climates, evolving land use practices, and socio-economic transition that impact the natural and human geography. This thesis investigates how bio-physical factors and herder action determine the pastoral environment in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. Research, focusing on drought, degradation and the extreme winter conditions that define pastoralism in Mongolia, examines pastoralists' perception of and interaction with their environment. This approach highlights steppe ecological and social processes within the global dryland debate. Fieldwork in Omnogovi and Ovorhangai Province established that drought is endemic in the region. However, drought events were independent of extreme winter conditions and did not exacerbate their impact. Degradation was not found at water points as vegetation cover decreased with distance from water. While remote sensing showed a decline in vegetation cover over time, it did not establish desertification on the steppe. Changing physical, socio-economic, and political conditions since 1990 continue to impact Mongolian pastoralism. Environmental conditions, particularly water resources and pasture quality, were paramount herder concerns. This research showed that pastoralists are economically motivated, differentiate on multiple dimensions, and value communal land stewardship. On the steppe, traditional mobile livestock practices improve livelihoods and remain an effective management approach. However, the future of pastoralism is uncertain as herders settle, the population ages, and children become educated. Thesis results emphasize the interaction of physical and social environments will define pastoralism's role in the Gobi Desert
