The Effects of an Overnight Environmental Science Education Program on Students' Attendance Rate Change for Middle School Years

Basham, Jennifer Elizabeth 18 December 2015 (has links)
Programs that engage middle students in participatory, real-world, and hands-on field based instruction can be a powerful asset to the educational experiences for students; motivating and inspiring some to appreciate and value school in a different way. Overnight environmental science programs have a unique opportunity to support students by creating experiences where students can participate in learning in vastly different ways from what they may engage with in the traditional 4-walled classroom, while concurrently developing a relationship with the natural world. Decreasing educational budgets and increased need to substantiate educational programs in terms of their impact on students has added pressure for overnight environmental science programs to validate their impact through quantitative means. Utilizing overnight environmental science education program attendance records and merging them with school district data relating to attendance, this study investigates the impact of one such overnight environmental science program on students' attendance rate change. Analyzing the secondary data using multiple linear regressions modeling, researchers explored how the overnight environmental program impacted student attendance rate change and how it varied by demographic characteristics to understand if and how the program addresses school district and educational policy reform targets.

Challenges and factors contributing to learner absenteeism in selected primary schools in Acornhoek

Mboweni, Lawrence 01 1900 (has links)
Learner absenteeism is one of the major precursors to poor academic performance. If learners miss school, they do not learn and ultimately they fail or drop-out. Notwithstanding, this problem does not receive the attention it deserves. A literature study, which reviewed research findings concerning absenteeism in South Africa and selected countries, provided a framework for the ensuing empirical inquiry. A qualitative study using in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, document review and observation as data gathering techniques focused on two selected primary schools with a high rate of learner absenteeism in the Acornhoek area of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Participants were purposefully selected as information rich candidates: absentee learners, parents of absentee learners, teachers and school principals. Learner absenteeism negatively impacts effective professional practice, that is, teaching and learning. The study concludes with recommendations to prevent learner absenteeism in order to improve teaching and learning in South African primary schools. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed. In education the minimum school attendance of 85 % for children between 6 and 15 years and 75 % for adolescents aged 16 to 17 years is required . According rationale explicit in legislation and official documents BFP, ensuring school attendance of children and young people in school would be a major break with the call for intergenerational transmission of poverty factor. This paper assumes the following questions: is attendance important factor to prevent the call intergenerational transmission of poverty? Does the fact that the child is in school with the help of the program ensures your education? This study examined the perceptions of mothers beneficiaries of the program regarding the requirement of attending school and prepared to understand according to their placements, the education of their children was related to participation in the BFP. Twenty semi-structured interviews with mothers of BFP beneficiaries were held in the southern region of Campinas/SP. The survey results indicate that for the beneficiary mothers BFP education of their children is not linked to the program because, according to them, the only requirement BFP with respect to school is school attendance and that they declare comply.
