Främja skolnärvaro utifrån känslan av sammanhang : En litteraturstudie / Promoting school attendance based on The Sense of Coherence : A literature study

Andersson, Anneli January 2023 (has links)
Introduction: Research has shown that there is a lack of precise statistics regarding the number of students with problematic school absence. Schools have a mission to promote students’ health and prevent problematic school absence. With students’ absence, there is a risk of them not achieving the goals that are in the curriculum, which might have negative consequences. Aim: The aim of this literature study is to examine how the school attendance of Swedish lower year students, with problematic school absenteeism, can be encouraged through the sense of coherence in a student’s schooling. Methods: A structured literature study was conducted based on twelve scientific articles collected from the databases Pubmed, SAGE Journals and Web of Science. The articles were thematically analysed. Results: The results of this study were divided into four themes: student, teacher, school nurse, and parent perspectives. Commitment, healthy relationships, a safe environment and cooperation between teachers, school nurses and parents appeared to contribute to a student’s experience with school being more understandable, manageable and meaningful. Conclusion: School absence is a complex problem. It is of high importance to create a feeling of belonging for the students, which in turn can encourage the student’s attendance in school.

A Study of School Attenders and Non-Attenders in the Ninth Grade in an Urban Inner-City School in North Central Texas

Bailey, Madell 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine the effect of academic self-concept, student aspiration, intellectual achievement responsibility, and certain other personal factors on the attendance patterns of selected ninth grade students, and to develop from data on all factors a typical profile of conditions likely to result in high absenteeism and make recommendations for initial steps in remediation. As a result of the statistical analysis and subsequent retention or rejection of the null hypotheses, the significant findings of this study may be summarized as follows. (1) Ninth grade attenders are significantly younger than non-attenders. (2) Attenders had more siblings than non-attenders. (3) Attenders are significantly more involved in school organizations than non-attenders. (4) There is a higher frequency in suspensions among non-attenders. Based on analysis of the findings of this study and within the limitations of the population described in the procedure section, the following conclusions were formulated. (1) Students who have been retained, started school later, or for some reason are older than their classmates, are more likely to attend school irregularly.(2) Educators cannot expect to find the major causes of student absenteeism to be academic self-concept, intellectual achievement responsibility, or student aspiration. (3) Family size may be an important consideration for educators to investigate when working with school non-attenders. (4) School attenders can be expected to be actively involved in the co-curricular elements of the school program. (5) Higher rates of student suspensions are more likely to increase attendance problems rather than reduce them. (6) How students use their time outside the school day is not likely to be the crucial factor in school attendance. (7) While students often complain about schedules, teacher selection, and proximity of friends, it is not likely that changes in these factors would influence student attendance.

"Det är ett samhällsproblem och inte ett skolproblem" : En studie av mellan- och högstadielärares upplevelse av sin roll och ansvar i relation till elevers skolnärvaro / "It´s a societal problem and not a school problem" : A study of middle school and high school teachers' perceptions of their role and responsibilities related to pupils' school attendance

Skoglund, Christina January 2023 (has links)
This study examines teachers' understanding of the phenomenon of school absence/attendance based on the frameworks: role and responsibility. Since the phenomenon is complex, interwoven within mutual relational dependencies between student, teacher, school, family, friends, health, law, politics, and so on, the study uses qualitative thematic analysis to examine the empirical data. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with middle and high school teachers in municipal primary schools in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The interview material has been analyzed in the light of previous research and with the help of theories that in various ways are based on a systemic understanding. The research questions could be answered through the study and the results that follow show that the creation of meaning and understanding of the overall phenomenon is polarized by the respondents. Absence is considered from a pathogenic perspective, as something that needs to be cured, and presence from a salutogenic perspective, something that can be promoted. The implications that can follow from this result are the most interesting products of the study, which can give rise to ideas for possible further research.

A comparison of achievement and attendance of fifth grade African American male and female students attending same-gender classes and coeducational classes in two inner city schools

Mitchell, Ethel Whitfield 24 October 2005 (has links)
This quantitative study compared achievement and attendance of fifth grade African American males and females attending same- gender classes and coeducational classes in two inner-city schools in Virginia. The population of the study was ninety African American students. Fifty-two students were in same-gender classes and thirty-eight students were in coeducational classes. The students were from very similar socio-economic neighborhoods. The lowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the students’ final grades in grades four and five were used to obtain quantitative data. Achievement and attendance information was reported in mean scores and percentages. Charts and tables were used where appropriate for purposes of comparison and clarification. Descriptive statistics were used for means, standard deviations, and percentages. A separate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test was performed for achievement grades in math, science, reading, and social studies and standardized test scores. An ANCOVA also was done on attendance. The fourth grade ITBS’s test scores in reading, math, science, and social studies served as covariates. A separate analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was run on each ANCOVA for the purpose of comparison. Significant main effects and interactions were analyzed. Number Cruncher Statistical System software was used for all computations. A probability level of .05 was selected as the level of significance. The analysis of the data for both groups revealed that students in the same-gender group showed higher achievement and improved attendance than the coeducational group. Grades for males and females were better in all subjects in same-gender classes. However, improved standardized test score results were divided. The results of this study can provide data to school districts interested in comparing same-gender schooling and coeducational schooling. It contributes to the growing body of research in same-gender schooling as an educational alternative. / Ed. D.

Factors related to school refusal of black adolescents in the Impendle area

Chemane, Bonginkosi Reginald 11 1900 (has links)
The specific aim of this research study was to identify, explore, describe and interpret the factors related to school refusal of black adolescents. An overview of literature was used to arrive at a broader appreciation of issues pertaining to school refusal phenomenon and also to black adolescents. Ten subjects participated in this study. Data were gathered qualitatively using ethnographic interviews. The following factors were found to be contributory to the problem of school refusal: School refusers who stay with grandparents instead of staying with biological parents; fear of something specific at school; lack of insight into the refusal problem; lover plays a role in refusal behaviour; protective parents; poor social relationships; fathers that play a marginal role in the family; parents' worldview; emotional problems and weak or no attempts to stop behaviour. The emphasis was on the understanding of the refusal phenomenon rather than on cause and effect. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (with specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

Připravenost dětí na vstup do školy v regionu Český Brod / Readiness of Children to Start School in Cesky Brod Region

Stejskalová, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis concerns with the school readiness issue in region Cesky Brod. High number of children with compulsory school attendance postponement resists these days, which the government decided to solve with compulsory preprimary year implementation. When framework education programs came into force, schools drew up their own school education programs. The basis, with which they enter the school, diversified. The goal of the thesis is to determine the areas in which most children had problems during the first grade enrollments in Cesky Brod region. The readiness of children to enter school is studied also from the parents' and the teachers' point of view and their points of view are compared. The research combines three methods - observation, questionnaire and case history. For the research during the first grades enrollments the observation was chosen. On the basis of the theory the areas for observation were determined and assessed according to the chosen assessment criteria. The points of view of the parents and teachers were examined in the questionnaire. The areas in which the most children had difficulties during the first grades enrollments were graphomotory and speech development. The parents and the teachers also share this opinion. Weak attention span is mention, in addition, by...

Guidelines for empowering secondary school educators, In loco parentis, in addressing truancy among early adolescent learners

Van Breda, Maynard John 30 November 2006 (has links)
This study examined the prevalence and the nature of truancy among early adolescent learners attending secondary schools in the Education Management and Development Centre (EMDC) in the eastern metropole of the Western Cape. The main purpose of the study was to answer the following question: How can secondary school educators, in loco parentis, be equipped with the required skills and resources in order to deal with the issue of truant behaviour among early adolescent learners? A comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore the character and extent of truancy. Thereafter, various theories of child development were highlighted, followed by a synopsis comprising different dimensions of the development of the early adolescent learner. The empirical investigation was carried out through quantitative as well as qualitative research methodology. A focus group interview was conducted with six learners, offering them an opportunity to express their perceptions and experiences as truants. Interviews were conducted with principals to obtain their impressions regarding truant behaviour. Thereafter, a questionnaire, which investigated truancy related aspects such as interaction with peers, parents and caregivers' involvement in learners' school activities, educators' influence on learners' school work and learners' self-esteem regarding their schooling, was administered to three hundred learners. The quantitative investigation revealed significant aspects about truant behaviour, indicating that predominantly more male than female learners (173 male and 26 as in the case of the present study) display this type of behaviour, truants generally originate from single parent families, and that they experience their educators and learning environments as extremely negative. Finally, two in-depth case studies were conducted on two learners, one identified as a truant and the other as a non-truant respectively. The purpose of the in-depth studies was to explore possible differences in their experiential worlds. Although the qualitative data is not generalisable, the findings of the case studies have revealed significant differences in the life worlds of the two learners. Comparatively speaking, it appears that non-truant learners are significantly better adjusted on all their functioning levels than truant learners. The results of the empirical investigation were compared with relevant findings which emerged from the literature study. Based on the present investigation, the study was concluded by offering a range of recommendations to secondary school educators, in loco parentis, empowering them in addressing the phenomenon of truancy among early adolescent learners in the Western Cape with its distinctive problems. / Educational Studies / D. Challenges and factors contributing to learner absenteeism in selected primary schools in Acornhoek

Mboweni, Lawrence 01 1900 (has links)
Learner absenteeism is one of the major precursors to poor academic performance. If learners miss school, they do not learn and ultimately they fail or drop-out. Notwithstanding, this problem does not receive the attention it deserves. A literature study, which reviewed research findings concerning absenteeism in South Africa and selected countries, provided a framework for the ensuing empirical inquiry. A qualitative study using in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, document review and observation as data gathering techniques focused on two selected primary schools with a high rate of learner absenteeism in the Acornhoek area of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Participants were purposefully selected as information rich candidates: absentee learners, parents of absentee learners, teachers and school principals. Learner absenteeism negatively impacts effective professional practice, that is, teaching and learning. The study concludes with recommendations to prevent learner absenteeism in order to improve teaching and learning in South African primary schools. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed.
