Beyond function: Pretoria station interchange and civic space

South Africa is faced with a situation where-by the general public has a negative perception of public transport. It is a fact that generally the lower income employees use public transport to get to work and back, whether it is buses, taxis, or trains. In the past, the combination of users and misinformed planning philosophies led to interchanges/ranks that were un-user friendly, and uninviting. However, the South African government has embarked upon a campaign to make public transport the heartbeat of the South African economy, and to improve the general public perception. Along with the hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the country finds itself under pressure to implement a safe, efficient, and user-friendly public transport system. This dissertation investigates means and principles of designing functional interchanges that incorporate civic activity and participation. Beyond Function seeks to recapture the social dimension of transport interchanges since; these are the converging or meeting spaces and gateways into the cities, there exists a need to be celebrated. Perception of Colors in Games as it Applies to Good and Evil

Context. Color can be used to convey allot of information but in particularly when it comes to tellingwho is good and who is evil. The most common color to use when displaying good and evil is blue forgood and red for evil. Objectives. This study will take a look at what colors people automatically associated with good andevil respectively. Methods. The two methods that are used in this paper is a survey in the form of a questionnaire andthe second method is a statistical hypothesis testing that was done on the data collected in the survey.The statistical hypothesis testing was done in the form of a chi-square test. From the chi-square testyou get a chi-square value and a p-value. Results. The result of the survey was that most participants thought of green, white and blue as goodcolors, while black and red where thought of as evil. The statistical hypothesis testing revealed thatthere where a significant statistical difference when comparing two colors in all but two cases. Thosecases where white vs. blue and orange vs. purple. Conclusions. The conclusions that can be drawn are that there is a significant statistical differencebetween how a color is perceived as good or evil. The perceived convention for what a good charactershould have, as a color is that it should be green and the perceived convention for an evil character isthat it should be either red or black.

Equivalent dynamic model of distribution network with distributed generation

Today’s power systems are based on a centralised system and distribution networks that are considered as passive terminations of transmission networks. The high penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) at the distribution network level has created many challenges for this structure. New tools and simulation approaches are required to address the subject and to quantify the dynamic characteristics of the system. A distribution network or part of it with DG, Active Distribution Network Cell (ADNC), can no longer be considered as passive. An equivalent dynamic model of ADNC is therefore extremely important, as it enables power system operators to quickly estimate the impact of disturbances on the power system’s dynamic behaviour. A dynamic equivalent model works by reducing both the complexity of the distribution network and the computation time required to run a full dynamic simulation. It offers a simple and low-order representation of the system without compromising distribution network dynamic characteristics and behaviour as seen by the external grid. This research aims to develop a dynamic equivalent model for ADNC. It focuses on the development of an equivalent model by exploiting system identification theory, i.e. the grey-box approach. The first part of the thesis gives a comprehensive overview and background of the dynamic equivalent techniques for power systems. The research was inspired by previous work on system identification theory. It further demonstrates the theoretical concept of system identification, system load modelling and the modelling of major types of DG. An equivalent model is developed, guided by the assumed structure of the system. The problem of equivalent model development is then formulated under a system identification framework, and the parameter estimation methodology is proposed. The validation results of the effectiveness and accuracy of the developed model are presented. This includes the estimation of the parameter model using a clustering algorithm to improve the computational performance and the analysis of transformer impedance effects on the ADNC responses. The evaluation of probability density function, eigenvalue analysis and parameter sensitivity analysis for the model parameters are also presented. Typical model parameters for different network topologies and configurations are identified. Finally, the developed equivalent model is used for a large power system application. The accuracy and robustness of the developed equivalent model are demonstrated under small and large disturbance studies for various types of fault and different fault locations.

Bidirectional DC-DC converter for aircraft electric energy storage systems

Future aircraft are likely to employ electrically powered actuators for adjusting flight control surfaces, and other high power transient loads. To meet the peak power demands of aircraft electric loads and to absorb regenerated power, an ultracapacitor-based energy storage system is examined in which a bidirectional dual active bridge DC-DC converter is used. This Thesis deals with the analysis, design, development and performance evaluation of the dual active bridge (DAB) converter, which can act as an interface between the ultracapacitor energy storage bank and the aircraft electrical power network. A steady-state analysis is performed for the DAB converter producing equations for the device RMS and average currents and the peak and RMS currents in the coupling inductor. This analysis focuses on understanding converter current shapes and identifying the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) boundary condition. A converter prototype was designed and built and its operation verified through SABER simulations confirming the accuracy of the analysis. Experimental results are included to support the analysis for 7kW, 20 kHz operating conditions giving a measured efficiency of 90%. To enhance the performance of the converter under light-loads, a quasi-square-wave mode of operation is proposed in which a dead-time is introduced either on the transformer primary voltage, or on the transformer secondary voltage, or simultaneously on both transformer primary and secondary. A similar detailed analysis as that for square-wave operation has been undertaken for all three cases and the converter performance was analysed focusing on ZVS operating range, impact of the RMS/peak inductor currents and converter efficiency. The theoretical work was validated through SABER simulations and proof of concept experimental measurements at 1kW, 20 kHz, which resulted in converter efficiency well above 91%. A 9%-17% improvement in efficiency and a 12%-17% improvement in ZVS operating range over square-wave operation are observed for similar operating conditions. Furthermore, a novel bidirectional current control technique for the DAB converter is presented. A SABER simulation has been performed and the converter operation is validated for square-wave and quasi-square-wave modes under steady-state and transient conditions.

Large scale broadband antenna array systems

Broadband antenna arrays have become increasingly popular for various imaging applications, such as radio telescopes and radar, where high sensitivity and resolution are required. High sensitivity requires the development of large scale broadband arrays capable of imaging distant sources at many different wavelengths, in addition to overcoming noise and jamming signals. The design of large scale broadband antenna arrays requires large number antennas, increasing the cost and complexity of the overall system. Moreover, noise sources often vary, depending on their wavelengths and angular locations. This increases the overall design complexity particularly for broadband applications where the performance depends not only on the required bandwidth, but also on the frequency band.This thesis provides a study of broadband antenna array systems for large scale applications. The study investigates different tradeoffs associated with designing such systems and drives a novel design approach to optimize both their cost and performance for a wide range of applications. In addition, the thesis includes measurements of a suitable array to validate the computational predictions. Moreover, the thesis also demonstrates how this study can be utilized to optimize a broadband antenna array system suitable for a low frequency radio telescope.

Framing pluralism: a reconfiguration of the Robson Square complex in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia

This thesis addresses the question of how a dialogue may be developed between the socio-political notion of pluralism and a pluralistic public sphere, and the design of public space and public architecture. More particularly, it considers how architecture may both accommodate multiple publics while simultaneously framing connection or association between them. Following an exploration of this question at an abstract, theoretical level, the thesis moves to a more specific architectural investigation. This investigation takes the form of a design project situated within the Robson Square complex in downtown Vancouver. The complex, constructed in the mid-1970's, was designed by Canada's pre-eminent architect Arthur Erickson and is the major civic space in the city. The thesis design project undertakes a theoretical re-evaluation and physical renovation of this Utopian mega-structure, with the intention of shifting the existing homogeneity and institutionality of the complex to align it with the thesis argument. Through the vehicle of a design project,, the abstract theoretical argument is translated and focused through the particularities of an architecture embedded in its site. This methodology requires the project to address issues connected to the existing masterwork, including: the question of how to conceptualize monumentally in a grid city; the relationship between the 'sacred' space of the civic circumstance and the 'profane' space of the street and commercial program; the form of the institution within the city; and the issue of working within, and manipulating, a pre-existing architectural language. Further, the scale of the site is reflected in the scope of the design project. The project moves from the development of urban design strategies to the detailed consideration of the material and construction of the different interventions. The architecture remains, however, conceptual and is a demonstration of how the developed strategies may generate form and guide program. The project does not attempt to fully develop a building in detail. The thesis concludes with an afterword on the success of the project as a demonstration of the thesis argument. At the same time, the limits of architecture to act as a socio-political device are acknowledged. Further, speculations are made as to the way in which the position and the strategies developed within the thesis might inform wider discussions on architecture and the urbanism of grid cities such as Vancouver. Chinese cross-listing corporations performance study - focus on U.S. and Mainland China markets

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of cross-listing on companies' performance. It is divided into two aspects, one in short-term and the other in long-term. In short-run study, 6 companies cross-listing in NYSE and Chinese market are in the sample. In pre-cross-listing period, the abnormal returns are mostly positive and remain stable; the cumulative abnormal returns are close to 0 and the difference among them is very small; but on the cross-listing day, all the companies' abnormal returns decline, and after that day, the abnormal returns still fluctuate around 0 while most of them are negative, and the difference among each company's cumulative abnormal return become large. In long-run study, by using multiple regression of 99 Chinese companies listed in th U.S. markets form 2007 to 2012, there is a significant positive relationship between total asset turnover and cross-listing at 5% significance level and there is a significantly negative relation between market value and cross-listing at 10%significance level; return on equity and return on asset are both positive with cross-llisting, but not significant.

Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / The aim of the present study was to determine whether church involvement can be conceptualized as a function of both organizational and personal factors. For the purposes of this study the psychosocial climate of the church served as an organizational factor while religious attitudes served as personal factors. A further aim of the study was to determine to what extent the church can be seen as a support system that serves as a buffer against stressors. Subjects consisted of 214 congregation members of 10 different churches that were spread out over the areas of Bellville-South, Kuilsriver and Belhar in the Cape Peninsula. Subjects completed five questionnaires: the Church climate scale (CCS), the Involvement in the church scale (ICS), the Survey of religious attitudes (SRA), a psychological well-being questionaire (RIF) and a biographical questionnaire. The relationship between the different variables were determined by means of product moment correlations, stepwise multiple regression and Chi-square analyses. The analysis of the significance of the differences between more involved and less involved church members was performed by means of Rotelling's T2 statistic. It was found that, according to the psychometric measures applied: the dimensions of the psychosocial climate of the church plays a limited role in the prediction of church insignificance as a predictor of church involvement in the final multiple regression analysis which involved all independent variables simultaneously. Orthodox religious beliefs had a positive relationship with church involvement, while inner religious conflicts had a negative relationship with church involvement. there was no relationship between church involvement and psychological well-being. orthodoxy, income, normative clarity and educational qualifications were the only significant predictors of church involvement. more involved and less involved members differed significantly and the difference between the two groups can be attributed to orthodoxy of religious beliefs. Although the results of the main investigation did not fully confirm the researcher's expectations, the intercorrelations between the different variables produced a number of interesting findings. The Church climate scale produced the following significant correlations with the other variables: ( i) "Normative clarity" correlated negatively with the experience of inner religious conflicts as well as the experience of anxiety, depression and global psychological well-being. It however correlated positively with educational qualifications. Chi-square analyses further showed that married persons, received a high level church. compared to unmarried per the persons, of "normative clarity" within "Sense of community" correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy and negatively with the experience of anxiety. (iii)"Social concern correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy as well as with sex (men percieved a higher level of social concern within the church than women) . (iv) "Openness to change" correlated positively with the level of religious orthodoxy as well as with sex (men percieved a higher level of social concern within the church than women)

This thesis has been prepared as urban study of social center residential complex in Brno - Lesná. I tis a lociation which wasn´t copleted during the construction of settlements Lesná already been completed. The main objective of the study is to verify the territorial land use options that already has an earlier era of the proposed basic services and building structure and contains values that should be respected. The priority of the proposal was to amend the pedestrian routes territory and reach their easy access. It passes through the center of the site Okružní Street, which divides the northern and southern parts. Original Halasovo Square lies to the north of this large area. Therefore, it was due to the availability and optimization of facilities proposed new territory south sguare with commercial and cultural center. Furthermore solved territory is divided into four areas. Each of them are concentrated in the vicinity of some of the surviving buildings (preserved objects - Albert shop and pool together sports hall TJ Tesla Brno, Lesná Clinic, Lidl shop, building society as Vema). Proposal limits sports and recreational areas, and places new buildings for public facilities and housing.
