Representation of China's Image on The Globe and Mail: A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis from the Perspective of van Dijk’s Ideology Square

Wang, Mengting 23 September 2021 (has links)
In early 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan put China in the spotlight of international news. China’s development in the field of politics, society, and economics still occupies media attention in the context of the global public health crisis. Previous studies have shown that China’s image in the western media, including the Canadian media, adopted a generally negative tone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate China’s image in one of the mainstream Canadian media platforms, the Globe and Mail, during the whole epidemic year of 2020. This research is based upon news reports published in 2020 by the Globe and Mail and is conducted with the support of corpus linguistic methodology and with the guideline of Critical Discourse Analysis, especially van Dijk’s ideology square. In order to discern and identify the image of China as portrayed by the Globe and Mail, the underlying discourse strategies are analyzed. Findings show that “China”, “Chinese government”, and “Chinese citizens” are the main subjects that make up the broad concept of China’s image. And in China’s related news report in the Globe and Mail from 31 December 2019 to 31 December 2020, (1) rhetoric devices, including number game, news source selection, illustration, irony, implication, presumption, vagueness, comparison, and history as lesson, are employed to polarize the image of the Chinese government and the Canadian government. (2) China’s image in the Globe and Mail is generally negative, which can be described via four aspects: China as a threat, callous, dishonest/untrustworthy, and powerful (3) the China-related news as constructed by the Globe and Mail reflects its own particular national ideologies and interests.

A cidade e seus patrimônios : um estudo das experiências, memórias e representações da praça central e do seu entorno em Pirassununga - SP /

Prado, Gustavo Ferreira. January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: Pirassununga is one of the municipalities of the state of São Paulo. Located in the administrative region of Campinas, is completing its 196 years of history and memory. Its emergence and consequent development are linked to the expanding productive activities in the region during the nineteenth century. Activities in the municipality have historically boosted the construction of the central square, where there is a relationship to be established with the surrounding heritage. Thus arose the desire to study the central public space of the city emphasizing the concept of place, focusing on urban heritage and retelling the story from the point of view of residents with their memoriesmemories. The methodological procedures included literature review, readings, oral history by the older population and representations made by younger people through the analysis of mind maps, in order to establish resignifications through the experiential perspective and contributing as a basis for the elaboration of public policies that preserve and value the heritage and public spaces and thus seek to contribute to geographical science and produce an important milestone for the history of Pirassununga and its inhabitants. / Mestre

Power Graphs of Quasigroups

Walker, DayVon L. 26 June 2019 (has links)
We investigate power graphs of quasigroups. The power graph of a quasigroup takes the elements of the quasigroup as its vertices, and there is an edge from one element to a second distinct element when the second is a left power of the first. We first compute the power graphs of small quasigroups (up to four elements). Next we describe quasigroups whose power graphs are directed paths, directed cycles, in-stars, out-stars, and empty. We do so by specifying partial Cayley tables, which cannot always be completed in small examples. We then consider sinks in the power graph of a quasigroup, as subquasigroups give rise to sinks. We show that certain structures cannot occur as sinks in the power graph of a quasigroup. More generally, we show that certain highly connected substructures must have edges leading out of the substructure. We briefly comment on power graphs of Bol loops.

Synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of Sn and V=O perfluoropinacolate complexes and magnetic properties of a {Mn6} cluster supported by perfluorpinacolate

Elinburg, Jessica Kelly 02 February 2021 (has links)
Herein, a series of tin and oxidovanadium complexes, as well as a hexanuclear manganese cluster, supported by the bidentate, dianionic perfluoropinacolate (pinF) ligand, {(O(C(CF3)2)2}2−, are reported. While six-coordinate SnIV-pinF complexes (2.1−2.3) were found to be spectroscopically similar to SnO2 (cassiterite), four-coordinate SnII-pinF complexes (2.4−2.5) possess low 119Sn NMR chemical shifts and remarkably high quadrupolar splitting. Additionally, the Sn(II) complexes are unusually unreactive towards both Lewis acids and bases. Computational analysis suggests that this lack of reactivity with Lewis acids arises from the energetic inaccessibility of the HOMO (5s), and the lack of reactivity with Lewis bases is due to donation into the LUMO (5px) by fluorine atoms on the ligand. Furthermore, monomeric and dimeric {VIV=O}- and {VV=O}-pinF complexes (3.1−3.4) were synthesized and characterized, including (Me4N)2[V2(O)2(μ-O)2(pinF)2] (3.3a). Complex 3.3a was found to catalyze the oxidation of several benzyl alcohols at room-temperature under ambient conditions, reproducing reactivity known for VOx surfaces and demonstrating the thermodynamically challenging selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes/ketones. Finally, a hexanuclear manganese cluster, {MnIII4MnIV2(pinF)6(OK(THF))4(OH)4}, abbreviated {Mn6} (4.1) which contains four-fold axial symmetry, and its oxidized analog {MnIII3MnIV3(pinF)6(OK(THF))4(OH)4}[PF6] (4.2), were prepared and characterized. High-field EPR measurements of 4.1 confirm a high spin magnetic ground state of ST = 11, corroborating the oxidation state assignments of the manganese centers. While EPR and CTM data suggest the possibility of slow magnetic relaxation for 4.1, field-dependent SQUID magnetometry reveals a lack of magnetic hysteresis, precluding the SMM behavior hypothesized for 4.1.

Squaring the square

Langenau, Holger 10 February 2018 (has links)
Given a square with integer side length n, we ask for the number of different ways to divide it into sub-squares, considering only the list of parts. We enumerate all possible lists and check whether a placement with those squares is possible. In order to do this, we propose a new algorithm for creating perfect square packings.

Procedurell terräng generering : Perlin Noise mot Diamond-square inom framkomlighet och exekveringstid / Procedural terrain generation : Perlin noise versus Diamond-square within accessibility and execution time.

Johansson, Pontus, Sjöberg, Zimon January 2020 (has links)
