The Prevalence and Nature of Arrest-Related Deaths in the United States: A Content Analysis of Fatal Police-Citizen Encounters, 2005-2006

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Recent events in places such as Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland, have focused the public's attention on citizen deaths during arrest encounters with officers in police departments across the United States. Riots and protests have broken out across the nation and resulted in a recent President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing to address some of these major issues. Arrest-related deaths (ARDs), however, are not a new phenomenon and have long generated controversy among the public. Despite the reoccurring nature of ARDs, no publicly available, central national registry of ARDs exists to allow for an in-depth analysis of such cases, as well as the development of training and policies to decrease police and citizen harms. In an effort to fill this gap, the current study conducts a retrospective, open-source, web-based search of media reports to explore the prevalence and nature of all types of ARDs that occurred through the United States in 2005 and 2006. The purpose of the study is to investigate ARDs, but to also assess the reliability of media reports as a source of data. The study finds that media reports are not adequate for identifying the prevalence of ARDs, but are useful when investigating circumstances surrounding deadly police-citizen encounters to an extent. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Criminology and Criminal Justice 2015

Podhajský, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
1 Abstract The topic of this thesis is civil aspects of animal ownership. The aim of this study is to analyze the specific civil aspects of ownership of animals, for example horses, in contractual relations and tort liability as well as a brief comparison of the issue with Austrian and Slovak legislation. The focus of this work lies in the analysis of the applicability of the relevant provisions of the Civil Code or the need for specific contractual provisions in the contractual relations and further analysis of the individual types of tort liability and their relationships. The thesis consists of three main chapters further divided into subsections. The comparison with foreign legislation is contained in the final subsection of each chapter. Problémy institutu vazby / The issue of concept of criminal custody

Bělecký, Jan January 2015 (has links)
59 8 Abstract - The issue of concept of criminal custody My diploma thesis deals with the criminal custody. It is an indispensable part of criminal process where personal freedom comes in a conflict with the effectivity of prosecution. Accused people are taken into custody before there is a decision on the matter and therefor the application of presumption of innocence is limited. Even though custody is not a punishment it can have very severe impacts on the accused person coming close to the impact of an actual punishment. The first part of the diploma thesis deals with the historical course beginning in the pre-hussite era until the present day. Second part obtains a brief explanation of what the term criminal custody means. The third part contains detailed characterization of the criminal custody reasons, strengthened criminal custody reasons and surrogate measures as well. The fourth part concerns about the rules of who is authorized to decide if an accused person is taken into criminal custody, the maximum length of the criminal custody, revisions of criminal custody legitimacy and decisions about further criminal custody duration. The diploma thesis should be able to describe the basic rules concerning the criminal custody.

The development of a parental alienation syndrome interview protocol

De Jager, Melissa 12 July 2013 (has links)
Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) is a childhood disorder that arises almost exclusively in child custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the unjustified rejection of a once-loved parent by a child due to a combination of the 'programming' parent's alienating techniques and the child's own contributions to the vilification of the targeted parent. Parental Alienation (PA) is differentiated from PAS as in the case of the former the child's rejection is justified and may be explained either by normal developmental behaviours or by child abuse that involves no form of programming. The purpose of this study is to develop a preliminary interview protocol to aid in the detection of PAS, with a special emphasis on differentiating false allegations of abuse, which usually accompany severe PAS, from true abuse. The aim of the study is to develop a protocol to enhance diagnostic clarity and facilitate appropriate custody-related recommendations. The interview protocol is based on an extensive thematic literature analysis in conjunction with existing guidelines for conducting a child custody and visitation interview. The interview protocol comprises a child and parent section, which both have their own reference tables with supporting corresponding information. The protocol 's administration instructions are outlined in a covering information page. Rigour was added to the protocol by having it assessed for clarity and accessibility by four medico-legal professionals with custody-related experience, and their opinions regarding the protocol's structure, sections, questions and reference tables were taken into consideration in the revision of the protocol. / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.54 Paper Capture Plug-in

Is family structure associated with the psychological behavior of young people? : The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in a population sample

Dahlqvist, Mattias January 2016 (has links)
Differences in family structure have been linked to several mental health outcomes, where children living in a nuclear family setting are best-off, while children in joint physical custody are second best followed by those living mostly and only with one parent. One of the biggest changes in recent years is that joint physical custody is growing more common. The dependent variables in this thesis were three dimensions of mental health from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Data from 6th and 9th graders in the entire Sweden 2009 was used. Regression modelling showed differences in mental health between the family structures throughout, although children in  joint physical custody was not significantly different from those in nuclear families (reference category) in half of the models. Children living mostly with one parent reported the third worst levels of problematic behaviour and prevalence of low prosocial behaviour while those living with just one parent were worst off. Stratifying by gender did reveal small coefficient differences and so did controls for birth region. This thesis, although in a line of other publications based on this study can help shape future guidelines for e.g. social workers.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren in the 21st Century

Bell, Lillian L 04 May 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze and record the characteristics of grandparents who are raising school-aged children as they relate to how the United States is responding to their needs and the needs of their grandchildren. The researcher sought to determine the characteristics of grandparent-headed households with no parent present in regards to housing, nutritional assistance, transportation, employment, age of children in the household, language spoken in the home, and family type, as measured by the 2010 United States Census Bureau. This study was conducted using a quantitative, descriptive research design. The data used for this study were indirect estimates produced by statistical model-based methods using sample survey, decennial census, and administrative data sources compiled by the United States Census Bureau. The Census Bureau collects data about American families for the nation, states and communities, and data related to socioeconomic status, family composition, and language spoken were used to more fully understand characteristics of households where grandparents are raising grandchildren outside of the traditional 1-2 parent American households. Participants included the 92 grandparent-headed households from among the 15,482 participants in the American Community Survey, which included 556 households where grandparents were living with grandchildren. To address the research questions, descriptive statistics were used, including frequencies and percentages. The statistical package SPSS was used to analyze the data. The results of this study revealed that of the grandparents who lived with their grandchildren where there was no parent present, 100% lived in housing units, 75% participated in the yearly food stamp/supplemental nutrition assistance program, 36% had no transportation, 26% were female householders who were unemployed and did not have a husband living in the household, 74% had related children who were 6-17 years old in the household, 51% lived in homes where only English was spoken, and 53% resided in homes where there was a married couple, while 39% of them were in homes with female householders with no husband present.
