Experiments on the dynamics of cantilevered pipes subjected to internal andor external axial flowRinaldi, Stephanie. January 2009 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to study and investigate the dynamics and stability of cantilevered structures subjected to internal, external, or simultaneous internal and external axial flows. This was accomplished, in some cases, by deriving the linear equations of motion using a Newtonian approach and, in other cases, by making the necessary modifications to existing theoretical models. The continuous cantilevered systems were then discretized using the Galerkin method in order to determine their complex eigenfrequencies. Moreover, numerous experiments were performed to compare and validate, or otherwise, the theoretical models proposed. More specifically, the four cantilevered systems studied were the following: (i) a pipe conveying fluid that is fitted with a stabilizing end-piece, which suppresses flutter by blocking the straight-through exit of flow at the downstream end; (ii) a pipe aspirating fluid, which flutters at low flow velocities in its first mode; (iii) a free-clamped cylinder (i.e. with the upstream end free and the downstream end clamped) in confined axial flow, which also flutters at low flow velocities in its first mode and eventually develops a buckling instability; and (iv) a pipe subjected to internal flow, which after exiting the pipe is transformed to a confined counter-current annular flow, that becomes unstable by flutter too.

This works presents an investigation on the changes in the dynamics of vibroimpact systems as their clearance is varied. Particularly we are interested in the migration of the characteristic frequencies of impact systems. We can consider that a given vibroimpact system reaches to a degenerated impact system when the clearance reaches to zero or to a value which is greater than the amplitude of the response of the system at the impact coordinate. We also can call these systems as associated linear systems of a given impact system, if the impact is the only nonlinearity which takes place. We show that there is an intrinsic relation between impact systems and their associated linear systems, or degenerated systems. To investigate this relation we consider the free response of 2-DOF and 3-DOF impact systems with impact in one of their coordinates. On the other hand, we have performed an experimental investigation in a randomly excited cantilever beam with impacts on its free end. We have found good agreement between numerical and experimental results. We have proposed a function for the migration of the first characteristic frequency of impact systems. The migration way depends on distribution of the total energy supplied to system among the vibration modes of the associated linear systems / Doutorado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica

estas restrições / This work presents the mathematical modeling of a vibrational system with the harmonically excited base. The system has been investigated by several researchers exploring many aspects of the global dynamics. However, in most of the systems studied, the systems were modeled for a vibro-impact feature. In this system, the impacts are replaced by another visco-elastic set and the moment of transition is considered as a condition of periodicity. Periodicity conditions are applied on the state at the moment of transition in order to obtain a map of the next transition based on the state of the previous one. This nonlinear map is used to obtain the conditions of existence of periodic motions with specific patterns. Applying the existence conditions, the stability of the motion can be achieved by analyzing the eigenvalues of the linearized map while taking these conditions into account

Nonlinear oscillations, bifurcations and chaos in ocean mooring systemsGottlieb, Oded 03 December 1991 (has links)
Complex nonlinear and chaotic responses have been recently observed in various
compliant ocean systems. These systems are characterized by a nonlinear mooring
restoring force and a coupled fluid-structure interaction exciting force. A general class
of ocean mooring system models is formulated by incorporating a variable mooring
configuration and the exact form of the hydrodynamic excitation. The multi-degree of
freedom system, subjected to combined parametric and external excitation, is shown to
be complex, coupled and strongly nonlinear.
Stability analysis by a Liapunov function approach reveals global system
attraction which ensures that solutions remain bounded for small excitation.
Construction of the system's Poincare map and stability analysis of the map's fixed
points correspond to system stability of near resonance periodic orbits. Investigation of
nonresonant solutions is done by a local variational approach. Tangent and period
doubling bifurcations are identified by both local stability analysis techniques and are
further investigated to reveal global bifurcations. Application of Melnikov's method to
the perturbed averaged system provides an approximate criterion for the existence of
transverse homoclinic orbits resulting in chaotic system dynamics. Further stability
analysis of the subharmonic and ultraharmonic solutions reveals a cascade of period
doubling which is shown to evolve to a strange attractor.
Investigation of the bifurcation criteria obtained reveals a steady state
superstructure in the bifurcation set. This superstructure identifies a similar bifurcation
pattern of coexisting solutions in the sub, ultra and ultrasubharmonic domains. Within
this structure strange attractors appear when a period doubling sequence is infinite and
when abrupt changes in the size of an attractor occur near tangent bifurcations.
Parametric analysis of system instabilities reveals the influence of the convective inertial
force which can not be neglected for large response and the bias induced by the
quadratic viscous drag is found to be a controlling mechanism even for moderate sea
states.
Thus, stability analyses of a nonlinear ocean mooring system by semi-analytical
methods reveal the existence of bifurcations identifying complex periodic and aperiodic
nonlinear phenomena. The results obtained apply to a variety of nonlinear ocean
mooring and towing system configurations. Extensions and applications of this research
are discussed. / Graduation date: 1992

Finding the Beat in Music: Using Adaptive OscillatorsBurgers, Kate M. 01 May 2011 (has links)
The task of finding the beat in music is simple for most people, but surprisingly difficult to replicate in a robot. Progress in this problem has been made using various preprocessing techniques (Hitz 2008; Tomic and Janata 2008). However, a real-time method is not yet available. Methods using a class of oscillators called relay relaxation oscillators are promising. In particular, systems of forced Hopf oscillators (Large 2000; Righetti et al. 2006) have been used with relative success. This work describes current methods of beat tracking and develops a new method that incorporates the best ideas from each existing method and removes the necessity for preprocessing.
