Factors that affect theory-practice integration of student nurses at a selected campus of a nursing college in the Limpopo ProvinceNxumalo, Suyekiye Jeanneth 06 1900 (has links)
The overall purpose of this study was to explore and describe the factors that affect theory-practice integration of student nurses at a selected campus of a nursing college in the Limpopo Province. Quantitative, descriptive, explorative and cross-sectional designs were used to accomplish the objectives of the study. Data collection was done using structured questionnaires with a few open-ended questions. The respondents were student nurses (n=106) and nurse educators (n=9). The findings revealed that failure of biological and natural sciences subjects, the use of traditional teaching strategies, inadequate use of simulation laboratory, inadequate clinical supervision, a shortage of resources, nature of the assessment process, extent of interest in the subject (s) taught, inability to draw clinical experiences during theoretical teaching, overpopulation of student nurses in the clinical area, negative attitude of ward staff and differences between the simulated skills and the actual clinical procedures in the ward affect theory-practice integration. / M.A. (Health Studies) / Health Studies

Cur.)-- University of Limpopo, 2013 / Background: The growing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic continues to make a serious impact on all countries throughout the world. Globally, countries have responded to the HIV/AIDS pandemic by investing millions of dollars to help fight the disease, but the impact of HIV/AIDS is even greater in developing countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. Aims: The aims of this study were to describe the perceived problems experienced by professional nurses who provide health care to patients living with HIV/AIDS in public hospitals of Polokwane municipality, Limpopo Province and to identify guidelines to support these professional nurses. Study method: A qualitative, descriptive and contextual method was used in this study. Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews were conducted with professional nurses who participated voluntarily in the study. Tesch’s open-coding method was used for data analysis. Results: Professional nurses who provided care to people living with HIV/AIDS at Polokwane Hospital expressed feelings of frustrations and work overload, treatment delay, lack of knowledge on HIV/AIDS, lack of support systems, poor prognosis and patients presenting with confusion and mental disturbances. Conclusion and recommendations: Despite the fact that the professional nurses expressed negative experiences as they carried out their daily activities, and they still continued rendering care to HIV/AIDS patients, notwithstanding the obstacles they encountered. Recommendations were made with regard to nursing practice and nursing education, staff support by

management, education and counselling for relatives, reaching out to the relatives and community, and further research.

The study sought to explore professional nurses' perceptions of the roles of home and community-based carers in the Capricorn district of the Limpopo province as well as the problems they experienced and make recommendations to improve the quality of home and community-based care.
A qualitative approach with non-probability, purposeful sampling was used in this study. The sample consisted of professional nurses serving as focal points for home-based care in the area of the study.
The findings indicated that professional nurses believe that carers have a role in providing care to the community and serve as the extended hands of their services. However, challenges exist, which impact on the quality of service delivery.
Recommendations included the strengthening of existing elements, such as improving relationships, communication, and the care of carer's programme, carer training, reporting, and monitoring and carer distribution. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Background
Trauma is the leading cause of death in the young (ages 1-44) and the current life
situation is responsible for producing emergency injuries from motor vehicle
accidents, violence and from acute life threatening illnesses. The training of
emergency nurses is therefore of priority based on the increasing demands on the
entire emergency health care system. The study evaluates the education and
training of emergency nursing programme that has been offered for the past
seven (7) years at a Nursing Education Institution (NEI) in the Limpopo province.
The programme has not has not been formally evaluated.
Aim
The overall aim of the study is to explore and describe the views of students pertaining
to the emergency nursing programme offered at the NEI in the Limpopo province and to
make recommendations for the refinement of the emergency nursing programme,
based on the views of the nursing students.
Methods
A qualitative design working from an Appreciative Inquiry approach was employed.
Purposive sampling was used and focus group interviews were conducted with 20
Professional nurses who are trained as emergency nurses at the NEI from 2007 to
2013.
Two main themes emerged: theoretical aspects and clinical aspects, which included
both positive and negative views. The findings were used to make recommendations
