Previous issue date: 2008-11-10 / Lightweight concrete has been the subject of several studies towards the development of new building materials. Emphasis has been given on the particle size
effect and nature of aggregates used as raw materials. The present study includes an analysis of the materials that make this kind of concrete, analyzes of mechanical
properties such as compressive and tensile strength, in addition to assessments of the interface concrete aggregate/matrix interface, porosity and absorption profile of chloride ions in lightweight concrete based on expanded clay. The experiments were carried out by molding cylindrical samples 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height. The dosage experiments were performed without additives or with the addition of minerals: (T1) 1: 2.01: 1.10: 0.78 (T2) 1: 2.00: 1.32 : 0.62 - (T3) 1 :1.93 :1.54: 0.47 (cement : sand : expanded clay 0500 : expanded clay 1506).The water to cement ratio was set to 0.43. Expanded clay minerals with different average particle sizes were used, i.e., 9.5 mm/0500 and 19 mm/1506. The larger aggregate was coated by a glassy layer, yielding lower water absorption characteristics to the concrete. The results showed that the use of light expanded clay aggregates is a technically interesting solution to the production of lightweight concrete for construction applications / Considerando-se as tend?ncias de novos materiais na Constru??o Civil, o concreto leve tem sido objeto de v?rios trabalhos, com ?nfase na granulometria
A dosagem

Co-creative Game Design as Participatory Alternative MediaPrax, Patrick January 2016 (has links)
The possibility of co-creation exists for all media, but game design has developed a culture that is unusually open to co-creation. This dissertation investigates significant cases of co-creation in mainstream games in order to explore how games can be co-created as alternative or critical media by their players. The core argument in the dissertation is that players co-create the design of a game only if certain conditions are met, namely: (1) player creation of a text or communication infrastructure that modifies the properties of the game and from which play emerges; (2) that this is done for a considerable group of players who share a particular practice of play; (3) that this is done not only by playing the game but by changing how others play it in a distinct creative activity, and (4), with the potential to subvert or contest the original design of the game. This situation where player creators have influence over the design of the game (but little power to enforce their interests) is problematic from the perspective of alternative or critical media, as alternative, local, production is seen as one reason for why a medium can have an alternative message. The industrial production of games as cultural commodities does limit the potential of co-creative game design for subversion because it reduces the level of participation in the creation process, thus keeping player creators relatively disempowered. Player creators do have influence on the design of the game, while at the same time having very little power to enforce their interests and design visions. The influence of player creators comes from the consumer power of millions of players who use co-created assets and who want to them to continue exiting, and this creates a mutually dependent relationship (and even partnership), between co-creators and commercial owners. The dissertation concludes that co-creative game design, despite limitations related to the industrial production of games as cultural commodities, is already happening, and shows a potential for turning games into alternative media.

Previous issue date: 2010-02-26 / This work examined the possibility of using mussel Mytella falcata as bioindicator sample to detect metal ions in several estuaries potiguares, since species substances that accumulate in their tissues due to its characteristics filter feeders have been used for environmental monitoring. The chemometrics by principal components analysis was used to reduce the size of the original data in order to establish a pattern of distribution of metal ion. Samples were collected at three different points in the estuaries Curimata?, Guara?ra-Papeba, Potengi, Galinhos-Guamar? and Piranhas-Assu having been marked with the location using GPS (Global Positioning System). The determination of humidity content and digestion of the samples were performed using methods described in the Compendium of analytical standards of the Institute Adofo Lutz (2005) and the determination of metal ions of the elements Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn and Zn were performed by optical emission
spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma as described by USEPA method 6010C. The results show that it is possible to use this molluscum Mytella falcata in the estuaries of Rio
Grande do Norte for the determination of metal ions. The data were subjected to principal components analysis (PCA) which enabled us to verify the distribution pattern of the metal
ions studied in several estuaries potiguares and group them according to the metal ions in common with and relate them to the activities in each region / Este trabalho procurou verificar a possibilidade do uso do molusco bivalve Mytella falcata como amostra bioindicadora para detectar ?ons met?licos em v?rios estu?rios potiguares, pois as esp?cies que acumulam subst?ncias em seus tecidos devido as suas caracter?sticas filtradoras tem sido utilizadas para o monitoramento ambiental.

The present study proposes the development of hybrid solutions to the transient
Hartmann flow problem with heat transfer of an electrically conducting and newtonian
fluid subjected to a constant magnetic field. The Generalized Integral Transform
Technique is employed to analyze the influence of Hall and ion-slip effects, as well as the
presence of solid particles on flow behavior, which is maintained by a constant or
exponential-decaying gradient pressure. A transverse flow normal to the walls can also
occurs, so that plates can be both porous. Additionally, a movement of the upper plate in
the longitudinal direction can be considered. Here, it is assumed that the magnetic field is
constant, being not affected by the flow, so that only an one-way interaction between the
flow and the magnetic field is studied. Temperature-dependent transport properties, such as
viscosity, thermal and electrical conductivity, can be considered too. Hybrid results are
obtained and compared to other numerical results for the velocity and temperature fields of
flow and solid particles as function of the main dimensionless governing parameters,
namely, Reynolds number, Hartmann number, Hall, Ion-slip and concentration of solid
particles. Convergence analyses are carried out for the main potentials in order to illustrate
the consistency of the technique (GITT) and its use for purposes of benchmarking in the
area of heat and fluid flow.

Verwonding, verwoording en verwerking : ʼn beskouing van Henning J. Pieterse se kortverhaalbundel Omdat ons alles is vanuit ʼn terapeutiese perspektiefBezuidenhout, Suzanne-Louise 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / When reading Henning J. Pieterse’s work the reader is confronted by a
sombre central theme, that of loss. Loss manifests itself in different ways in
his oeuvre, but the most notable forms of loss are as result of the ending of a
love affair or death. A second noticeable theme in Pieterse’s work is art and
artistry, specifically the creative writing process.
In my opinion these themes are most evident in his 1998 collection of short
stories Omdat ons alles is (Because we are everything). The main premise in
this collection of short stories is the suicide of the beloved wife and the
accompanying feelings of loss and grief. The male characters in these stories
struggle with processing and accepting loss - loss due the suicide of a
beloved wife or due to the ending of a relationship. Various attempts are
made to forget the loss and to numb the pain. The characters turn to alcohol,
drugs and sex as ways of trying to work through or process the loss, but these
methods only bring temporary relief. These self-destructive methods op
escapism are contrasted with the constructive act of writing. At the same time
the journey to psychic recovery and the processing of trauma becomes a
creative journey. By expressing trauma through writing about wounding
experiences there is striven to process it. The processing of trauma by means
of literary narratives is often extremely exhausting and distressing. In the act
of writing about trauma, painful memories that are repressed in the psyche
are brought to the surface.
In this thesis Omdat ons alles is is viewed from a therapeutic perspective to
establish whether the act of writing plays a part in the processing of trauma.
Narrative therapy is concerned with the finding of words and language to
communicate trauma by creating a story in which the meaning and coherence
that trauma destroys, can be recaptured. Trauma destroys the meaning and
coherence of a life story and leaves the individual powerless and confused,
but by finding words to communicate trauma, there is a positive movement in
the direction of dealing with and accepting loss. In Omdat ons alles is Pieterse
maps the journey of working through loss and trauma, but in these stories it is
also emphasised that this journey is by no means a joyride. In the end it
seems that the act of writing does play a part in the processing of trauma, but
to which extent, remains an open question.

The dissertation examines how Deon Opperman portrays and regenerates the revolt motif in his Afrikaner dramas, in order to reflect the changing social environment. Chapter 1 provides an overview of revolt as lifestyle and as motif in Afrikaans drama. Chapter 2 offers a theoretical examination of The theatre of revolt (Brustein 1991), a discussion of concepts such as rewriting, multiculturalism, modern diaspora and
globalization, as well as a contextual study of Deon Opperman’s Afrikaans oeuvre. Chapter 3 (Donkerland) focuses on revolt within the postcolonial rewriting of Afrikaner history. Chapter 4 (Kruispad and Ons vir jou) deals with social revolt within a multicultural milieu, whereas chapter 5 discusses Kaburu as a reflecting text and addresses the issue of the modern diaspora as a reaction to political transition.
