The early compositions of Paul Hindemith, like those of other composers in their early years, were more or less influenced by contemporary musicians and musical environment. The early years of Paul Hindemith was right at the end of the romantic period as well as the enthusiastic period of post-romantic music. Moreover, with the coming of the 20th century, many musicians pursued the innovative sonority and compositional techniques. Consequently, they composed many compositions which were different from those of the romantic or post-romantic styles. The opus 8, ¡§Three Pieces for Cello and Piano¡¨, of Paul Hindemith was composed at this transitional period. The various new musical idioms and compositional techniques of romantic, post-romantic and the 20th century, which may possibly be contained in this composition, will be the main concern of this essay. In the first chapter of this dissertation, Paul Hindemith¡¦s biography and brief abstract of his compositional style will first be introduced, and then followed by an overall introduction of the musical environment during the transitional period in the 19th and 20th century. In the second chapter, we will further analyze the three pieces in opus 8 individually, seeking and researching the musical style and compositional techniques in the transitional period between 19th and 20th century, in order to draft the background and transition of the times. Hopefully, this will help to understand the styles and characteristics of this piece.

This research deals with the creation and legitimization of traditional cosmologies in the twentieth and twenty-first, taking as a starting point Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Roman Catholic Church. Through the historical, documentary, sociological and theological survey of the Medieval and Tridentine periods of the Catholic church, it is believed that Opus Dei, to rescue such traditionalism, creates a sphere traditional cosmological allows you, in a unique way, dealing with contemporary issues, attracting young and fortifying themselves within the Church. Reflecting the discursive and documentary reconfiguration from the rescue of traditional Catholic thinking conducted by Opus Dei, leads us to the discussion of the possible ways of the Church, tradition and society in recent centuries, as well as social and institutional factors that interfere and influence the formation the young and "being young" nowadays.

Brahms Female Choral Works Op.17

Chung, Chia-yu 11 September 2002 (has links)
Brahms is an important German romantic composer. In additional to his outstanding output in orchestral composition, he also finished thirty-four female choral pieces. Most of them were written during 1857-62, when he was still in Hamburg and dirdcting the Hamburg Women's Chorus. Opus17 belongs to this category. It is for three-part female choir, with harp and horns as the accompaniment. It includes four short pieces, text in German, with the feeling of lament. The form is simple and clear. The texture is mostly choral. The melodies in each vocal part are not difficult; however, it is the harmonic color that gives this work its special taste. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. The second chapter inclides three parts. Part one introduces the life of Brahms. Part two is the chronological discussion of Brahms choral composing. Part three focuses on the female choral works. The third chapter analyzes the four pieces of Brahms Opus 17. The fourth chapter presents suggestions for teaching Opus 17, including vocalization, interpretation, diction, and conducting technique. The fifth chapter draws conclusion from the study.

"Allegro de Concert," op. 46, by Frédéric Chopin: A Performance Guide

Jeong, Jiyoon 08 1900 (has links)
Frédéric Chopin produced a remarkable body of piano works. Even though most of his works are essential repertoire in piano literature, some of them remain less familiar. One such significant work is the Allegro de Concert in A major, op. 46, which was apparently intended to be the first movement of a third piano concerto. Despite the praise the work has received, it is rarely heard, and references to performance are lacking in the scholarly literature. Some reasons include the substantial technical challenges, such as risky skips, trills in double notes, thick harmonic textures, complex passagework, and the perpetual motion. This study provides a performance guide for the Allegro de Concert, looking at various perspectives of an informed musical performance. The historical backstory of the intended third concerto and a detailed form analysis demonstrate that the work has a combined form, incorporating elements of both concerto and sonata-allegro form. The chapter on performance presents the technical issues and a comparative analysis of various editions and arrangements of this work to inspire musical ideas and suggest appropriate solutions to the musical and technical difficulties.

Modeling Spatial Variability of Field-Scale Solute Transport in the Vadose Zone

Zacharias, Sebastian 08 October 1999 (has links)
Spatial heterogeneity in the soil system has a profound influence on the flow of water and chemicals in the unsaturated zone. Incorporating intrinsic soil variability and extrinsic variability into root zone leaching models will provide a better representation of pollutant distribution in natural field conditions. In this study, a stochastic framework (SF) was developed to represent spatial variability of soil properties in one-dimensional solute transport models, and implemented with two existing root zone leaching models, Opus and GLEAMS. The accuracy of soil water, bromide and pesticide transport predictions from Opus-SF and GLEAMS-SF was evaluated using field-measured soil water content, bromide and pesticide mass data from a 3.9-ha agricultural field in the Dougherty Plain of Georgia and a 0.05-ha field plot in Nomini Creek watershed in Virginia. Results from the rate-based Opus-SF and capacity-based GLEAMS-SF were compared to determine if there were significant differences in their predictions. In the stochastic approach, the heterogeneous field is conceptualized as a collection of vertical, non-interacting soil columns differing in soil properties. The horizontal variations of soil hydraulic and retention properties in each horizon are treated as random functions of zero transverse spatial correlation length, after accounting for any spatial trends. The spatially variable parameters were generated using the Latin hypercube sampling method, and the stochastic simulation of the model was performed using Monte-Carlo simulation techniques. Statistical tests indicated that Opus-SF and GLEAMS-SF did not predict the central tendency and distribution of depth-averaged soil water content and total pesticide mass observed in the field on most sampling dates. But their predictions were sufficiently accurate for most management-type applications. Soil hydraulic and retention properties derived from texture data at the Nomini Creek site substantially reduced the variability in soil water content predictions from both models, but had less impact on bromide and pesticide mass predictions from both models. The mean values predicted by Opus-SF and GLEAMS-SF were similar, but not equal to those predicted by the deterministic version of the models. Soil water and solute transport predictions from Opus-SF and GLEAMS-SF were not substantially different from corresponding results from the traditional Monte-Carlo approach, although soil water predictions from the two modeling approaches were significantly different for the first 150 days of simulation. Comparison between results from Opus-SF and GLEAMS-SF showed that the distributions and medians of soil water content predicted by the two models were significantly different on most sampling dates. The distributions and medians of pesticide mass predicted by the two models were closer than soil water content, but were significantly different on more than half of the field sampling dates. The more functional GLEAMS-SF model was able to simulate depth-averaged soil water content in the root zone better than the more physically based Opus-SF, although GLEAMS-SF was not able to simulate the depth distribution of soil water as accurately as Opus-SF. GLEAMS-SF was also able to predict solute movement at least as well as Opus-SF. GLEAMS-SF was able to simulate spatial variations of depth-averaged soil water content and pesticide mass in the field with reasonable accuracy employing fewer parameters that exhibit relatively lesser spatial variability. / Ph. Silva, Marcio Fernandes da 02 March 2009 (has links)
The central idea of this work is to present the educational philosophy of Opus Dei´s practices and critically analyze those practices. The main contribution of this work shall be the demonstration that the Opus Deis concept of education has as primary goal the production of fully submitted individuals. The methods used by the institution to achieve this goal will also be presented. The works nature is theoretical, but also includes the analysis of many testimonies of real cases. The object of research is composed by Opus Deis texts (written by its founder, the spanish Josemaría Escrivá, and by some of his followers) and by the so called informal education of Opus Dei, witch are activities that usually take place inside the institutions houses.
