Quality of Work Life: Investigation of Occupational Stressors among Obstetric Nurses in Northeastern OntarioBehdin, Nowrouzi 09 October 2013 (has links)
Nursing is a stressful occupation with various physical and psychosocial
stressors inherent in its practice. While the physical stressors of nursing are generally
understood, less understood are the psychological and social stressors of the profession. With the
many changes in healthcare facilities and structures that are occurring today and, in turn,
affecting nurses, it is increasingly important to better understand the psychosocial stress
experiences of nurses. Grounded in the Job Demand-Control-Support Framework, the objectives
of this study were to: 1) examine factors associated with quality of work life (QWL) of
Registered Nurses working in four small urban hospital-based obstetric programs, 2) determine if
nursing occupational stress, QWL, and various factors (e.g., demographic, locations with and
without cross-training) are associated with nurses’ work ability, where work ability is the
worker’s capacity to perform their work, as was measured by the work ability index, and 3)
review and evaluate some workplace interventions targeting occupational stress management and
burnout for nurses.

Visual perceptual abilities in obstetric brachial plexus palsy : an investigation of the incidence and a comparative analysis.Nukanna, Ornissa. January 1998 (has links)
Obstetric brachial plexus palsy, a traumatic birth palsy, results in the paralysis of the upper limb/s.
The birth injury is treated at the Brachial Plexus Clinic at King Edward VIII th Hospital, where
the Candidate forms part of the Rehabilitation Team. In keeping with worldwide trends, the focus
of treatment was on rehabilitation of the upper limb/s. During the course of treatment of these
patients, it was observed that the performance of these children varied from excellent to poor.
This observation, has not been recorded previously, hence a Research study was initiated to
invesitigate this aspect of performance.
The study comprised thirty children, between the ages of four and seventeen, whose paralysis was
assessed in the conventional pattern. In addition, the visual perceptual abilities of these children
were assessed in a variety of batteries, catering for the wide age range.
These were:
Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration (1989),
Motor Free Perception Test (1972),
Developmental Test of Visual Perception (2nd edition),
Test of Visual Perceptual Skills - Upper and Lower levels ( Gardner),
Jordan's Left-Right Reversal Test (1974),
Clinical (Ayres) and General Observations.
Although traditionally viewed as a physical disorder, the results of the study indicate that
children with obstetric brachial plexus injury present with a significant incidence of below average
performance, against the normal population, on most of the assessment batteries. No significant
relationship could be established between the severity of the lesion and visual perceptual abilities,
owing to the disproportionate numbers of children amongst the different lesions. Further research
is required to support and consolidate the findings of this study. It is also recommended that
Occupational therapists screen for visual perceptual deficits in such injuries, thus facilitating
holistic patient management. / Thesis (M.O.T.)-Unversity of Durban-Westville, 1998.

Methodological approach of the spatial distribution of maternal mortality in Burkina Faso and explanatory factors associatedLougue, Siaka January 2013 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Maternal mortality is one of the most important problems related to the reproductive health. This is why the reduction by three quarters of maternal mortality by 2015 has been fixed as target No. 5 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Achieving this goal requires an annual decline of 5.5% of maternal mortality between 1990 and 2015. Unfortunately, the reduction as estimated in 1997 was less than 1% per year. Africa is the continent most affected by this problem. In 2010, the number of maternal mortality in the world was estimated to 287 000 and Africa was hosting more than 52 % (148 000) of the occurrence in the world In Burkina Faso, maternal mortality ratio decreased from 566 in 1991 to 484 in 1998 and 341 in 2010 according to the DHS data while the census estimate was 307 in 2006 and United Nation agencies provided the number of 300 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in 2010. Statistics provided by the different sources vary considerably. This situation creates confusion among data users. In addition,
researches made on the issue remain very insufficient because of the complexity of the issue, lack of data and poor quality of existing data on maternal mortality. This study has been initiated to fill the gap of knowledge about the determinants and estimates of maternal mortality at national and sub-national levels. Results of this research highlighted explanatory factors of maternal mortality at national and regional level with a focus on factors of regional disparities. Findings also provided estimate by adjusting the census 2006 data from missingness and incoherences, improving the census method and testing different other methods. Finally, projection of maternal mortality level is made from 2006 to 2050.

The study aimed to understand the causes of the precocious search of the nosocomial service for the women in the end of the gestation driven by the Movable Service of Urgency. The approach made use fenomenológica of the type socioexistencial, proposed by Alfred Schütz considering the wish of revealing the typical characteristic of a social group that survives determined situation. The subjects were nine pregnant women led to the motherhood in false labor. The interview was orientated by the questions: Which the motives that took it looking for the motherhood? Tell to me his trajectory up to the brought near one here and which his expectation when the moment of the labor will arrive? The speeches were subjected the analysis idiográfica and nomotética, when the categories are surfacing of the phenomenon: The belief in which he labors due to the perceived signs / symptoms, influences It of others the search for the obstetric presence, The dependence of the systems of support as influence the decision, The search for the tranquillity due to the fear and insecurity felt, The search for the end of the gestation and incident of the childbirth. In the social intersubjective relation of women inserted in a common space of experience, the existence of the end of the gestation it represents a transformation in his to do daily, his behaviour and social relationship. While reflecting his motives because, they reveal a wealth of values and personal beliefs that constitute his luggage of knowledges acquired in his experiences experienced in life. The presence of the pain or the sentí-woolen fear mobilize the action of institucionalizar-se, when there is guaranteeing the security guard what the relation face to face with the professionals provides.
