An assessment of the diffusion of mobile technology applications among the elderly in the Gauteng province.

Gounden, Krishna Steven. 29 August 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Business Administration / Some innovations are accepted very quickly, while others are not. Knowing how technology and innovations are diffused within a social system helps understand the behaviour of its members. If one can identify the individuals, when they adopt the technology, and the reasons that led them to do so at that time, one can characterize their behaviour and perhaps hasten the acceptance and diffusion of an innovation. The aim of this study was to provide strategic insight into the adoption of mobile phone technology by 52 senior citizens in the south of Johannesburg, South Africa, and to understand the key benefits that elderly people derive from using it. The findings indicate that the rate of adopting mobile phones was high among these senior citizens and they were using the technology extensively - to call family and friends, take photos, SMS, play music, et cetera. The study recommends that mobile telephone suppliers cater for this segment of the market through the provision of affordable devices and flexible contracts, since the majority of senior citizens are retired.

An architectural plan for preventative care of the aged : addressing the need for a holistic centre for the aged, merging rehabilitation and well-being, in South Africa.

Haynes, Anthony Robert. January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this research document is to understand the social issues that are generated from a globally ageing demographic, which relate to the aged identity and the current care environments available to them. Research will be conducted under the hypothesis that the design of a strategically sited care facility which, grouped with facilities that pertain to the care of the aged, could improve the quality of life for the elderly whilst promoting intergenerational connectivity. It is also hoped that ageist stereotypes could be abridged by lowering the dependency of the elderly on care providers by providing preventative and post operative rehabilitative care. The scope of the work is limited to the urban context of South Africa's ageing population primarily based on the current trend of mass urbanisation, after the abolition of the Apartheid government, which is creating a new family dynamic within South Africa where the care of the elderly is shifting onto medical institutions and care facilities. The demand for aged care facilities and the lack of resources in the field of aged care potentially create a situation where medical facilities are unnecessarily overburdened. An architectural response was generated through an investigation of current literature, case studies, precedent studies and personally conducted interviews with a number of aged care professionals. The research was conducted from a global standpoint and then focused towards issues that affect the aged individuals identity and care. The goal of this research was ultimately to inform the design of a care facility within Pietermaritzburg that is responsive to the needs of the elderly whilst being innovative towards its approach of aged care within a community. / Thesis (M.Arch.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

Rabe, Maria Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In hierdie studie is adolessente se houdings teenoor bejaardes ondersoek. / In this study adolescents' attitudes towards the elderly were investigated. The social nature of attitudes were highlighted and then linked to social distance. Aspects of subcultures, Cowgill's formulation of the modernisation theory, the age stratification model and Dowd's exchange theory were used as a theoretical base. The aim of the study is to establish whether there is a relationship between adolescents' attitudes towards specific elderly persons and adolescents' attitudes towards the elderly in general. The relationship between attitudes towards the elderly and the following were also examined, adolescents': gender, home language, amount of contact with elderly persons and evaluation of conversations with elderly persons. The study was conducted by way of a questionnaire administered to standard seven pupils in several schools in the Vanderbijlpark-Vereeniging area. A relationship was discovered between adolescents' attitudes towards specific elderly and adolescents' attitudes towards the elderly in general. / Sociology / M.A. (Sosiologie)

Die veiligheidsbelewenis van bejaardes in Benoni

09 February 2015 (has links)
M.A. (Social Work) / In recent years the increasing number of assaults, murder and other forms of victimization of the elderly in South Africa have become a topic widely reported by the mass media and frequently discussed in communities. The threatening of the personal safety of an aged person is a matter of great concern with possible repercussions on the lifestyle of the individual concerned. In this regard Harris & Cole (1980:383) accurately state "The fear of crime greatly diminishes the quality of life for large number of older people and restricts their mobility. Much of this fear may came from the fact that older people are acutely aware of their vulnerability to victimization." The aims of this study are: to determine how the aged, living in Benoni, experience their personal safety; to determine how the experience of their personal safety influences the daily activities of the aged; to determine factors in personal safety of which the aged should be informed...

Pastorale handelinge met en vir die tagtig plus ouer persoon / Pastoral actions with and for the eighty plus older person

Labuschagne, Jean 05 1900 (has links)
This research forms part of the Church's call for compassion and focus on that aspect of the ministry that is concerned with the welfare of the eighty plus elderly in particular. A qualitative study within a practical theological framework through in-depth interviews among the eighty plus elderly, religious leaders and nursing staff involved in eldercare, were conducted in Mossel Bay. Building relationships, conducting a meaningful and dignified existence, to be understood and unconditionally accepted, clearly emerged from the results. This research compels the congregation to rethink the aging process and how a holistic approach to eldercare can result in empathic pastoral support where the retired through empowerment programs receive the necessary skills to develop their ability to care for each other. Die evaluering van 'n maatskaplike groepwerkprogram vir verpleegkundiges van 'n versorgingsinrigting vir gedementeerde bejaardes

Taute, Florentina Magdalena 09 February 2015 (has links)
M.A. (Social Work) / Relevant literature clearly indicates a steady increase in not only the number of aged persons but also the demented population. Consequently it has become imperative that the nursing staff responsible for the day - and night care of demented patients in a residential setting, acquire appropriate knowledge of dementation as such, and clarity on their roles in an endeavour to decelerate the dementation process. They, furthermore, need to be aware of the special needs of demented aged persons --needs which call for particular professional skills. In this study the emphasis is on the development and evaluation of a group work programme for nurses in two homes for demented aged persons. The programme is based upon knowledge on dementation, and its contents are directed at a repertoire of skills which, when effectively practised, will serve as a support system to nurses. Researcher made use of an indirect measuring method: an experimental - and control group were established at two homes where direct observation was done in respect of the behaviour of the residents and the nature of nursing. A questionnaire was completed by the experimental - and control group, prior to and following on the provision of a group work programme. The target universe consisted of fifteen nurses at two homes for demented aged persons. Nine and six members of the nursing staff were respectively connected to the experimental - and control groups. The experimental group attended nine sessions which incorporated the mediating - goal model designed by Papell and Rothman (in du Preez 1979:73)...

The effect of a dance and music programme on the functional ability of the residents of an old age home in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal

Gqada, Nomusa Constance January 2016 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Nursing, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Life expectancy has increased rapidly since the beginning of the twentieth century and people aged 65 and older form the fastest growing segment of the population. With the onset of old age, comes social, physical and psychological challenges that result in morbidity and loss of independent life. For some of the socially and economically marginalized elderly this often means living in a long term facility. This study determined the effect of a dance and music programme on balance and function in the residents of a selected old age home in Pietermaritzburg. Aim of the study The study determined the effect of a dance and music programme on the balance and functional ability of the residents of the old age home. Methodology A pre-test/post-test experimental design was used in this study. The eligible participants were randomly assigned to two groups, the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group participated in the 12 week programme of a dance and music programme offered twice weekly while the control group received standard care. Both groups’ functional abilities and balance capabilities were assessed before and after the intervention. Results The results revealed that dance and music programme did not statistically improve balance and function. Function improved in the experimental group post-test compared to the pre-test. Positive feelings expressed during the classes indicate that the intervention had a positive effect on the participants. Conclusion The dance and music programme improved function. It is recommended that residents of the geriatric home be offered this dance and music programme as a long term activity. / M
