FundaÃÃo Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e TecnolÃgico / Esta dissertaÃÃo tem como finalidade fazer uma anÃlise da construÃÃo literÃria da cidade de Fortaleza a partir da perspectiva apresentada no romance A Afilhada, do cearense Oliveira Paiva, escrito nos rodapÃs de Libertador, um jornal abolicionista, publicado na dÃcada de 1880, no CearÃ. Basicamente esquecido na histÃria da literatura cearense, o romance traÃa um perfil curioso de uma cidade em processo inicial de modernizaÃÃo, no final do sÃculo XIX. O trabalho se divide em trÃs capÃtulos. No primeiro momento, busco apresentar aspectos histÃricos do romance estudado, seu contexto de criaÃÃo, assim como apresento alguns elementos de transformaÃÃo, econÃmica e cultural que a cidade de Fortaleza estava passando no perÃodo retratado pelo romance. No segundo capÃtulo, traÃo uma discussÃo entre a relaÃÃo do intelectual com a cidade moderna e desta com o surgimento deste romance, assim como apresento uma sumÃria defesa da importÃncia das narrativas. Ainda no segundo capÃtulo, faÃo uma comparaÃÃo rÃpida entre os romances A Afilhada e A Normalista. Este Ãltimo, do tambÃm cearense Adolfo Caminha, foi publicado em 1893. Mostro que, embora sejam contemporÃneos, eles constroem cidades semelhantes, mas com distinÃÃes significativas. No terceiro capÃtulo, apresento um perfil intelectual de Oliveira Paiva, participante de importantes publicaÃÃes na histÃria da produÃÃo literÃrio-cientÃfica do CearÃ. Por meio da escrita, como difusora de idÃias e ideais, ele se esforÃou para transformar a provÃncia em um lugar mais civilizado e prÃximo da modernidade. Amante da ciÃncia e das letras, Oliveira Paiva acreditava que o conhecimento e as palavras compunham as duas principais armas para a eliminaÃÃo da ignorÃncia e do atraso presentes na cidade. Embora fragmentos do romance A Afilhada estejam presentes por quase toda a dissertaÃÃo, no terceiro capÃtulo, analiso com mais substÃncia o conteÃdo do livro. Minha hipÃtese à que a cidade construÃda por Oliveira Paiva à marcada por um excesso de elementos naturais que interfere na sua possibilidade de ascensÃo. Parte da populaÃÃo, a exemplo da protagonista, nÃo acompanha o crescimento da cidade moderna. A Fortaleza de Oliveira Paiva carece tambÃm de cidadÃos com o compromisso de cuidar da cidade tal qual um pai cuida de uma filha. / This dissertation seeks to analyze the literary construction of Fortaleza from the perspective presented in the novel A Afilhada, written by Oliveira Paiva, an author of the Brazilian state of CearÃ, which was wrote in footnotes of Libertador, an abolitionist newspaper, published in the 1880âs, at CearÃ. Basically forgotten by the history of CearÃâs literature, the novel makes a curious profile of a city in an initial process of modernization, at the end of the XIX century. The work is divided in three chapters. In the first moment, I seek to present historical aspects of the studied novel, its creation context, as well as I present some elements of economical and cultural transformations that Fortaleza city was passing through in the period characterized in the novel. I add these information to my theoretical-methodological referential. At the second chapter, I discuss the relation between the intellectual and the modern city and between this and the emergence of the novel, as well I present a summary defense about the importance of the narrative. Besides, at the second chapter, I do a brief comparison between the novel A Afilhada and A Normalista. The last one, written by another author of CearÃ, Adolfo Caminha, was published in 1893. I argue that, although they are contemporaries, they construct similar cities, but with significant distinctions. At the third chapter, I present an intellectual profile of Oliveira Paiva, who participated in important publications in the history of Cearà literary-scientific production. Through the writing, as a disseminator of ideas and ideals, he made effort to transform the province in a place more civilized and close to the modernity. A lover of the science and the letters, Oliveira Paiva believed knowledge and words compose the two main weapons to eliminate the ignorance and delay presents in the city. Although fragments of the novel A Afilhada are present in almost the entire dissertation, at the third chapter I analyze more substantively the continent of the book. I defend the hypothesis that the city constructed by Oliveira Paiva is marked by an excess of natural elements that interferes in his possibility of ascension. Part of population, like the protagonist, doesnât follow the grow of the modern city. The Fortaleza of Oliveira Paiva lacks also of citizens compromised to take care of the city like a father takes care of his daughter.
