Discovery of a double binary and nonradial pulsations in the Be star omicron Andromedae

Hill, Grant Michael January 1988 (has links)
The multiple star system omicron Andromedae has been studied using high signal-to-noise ratio Reticon spectra. The narrow absorption features superimposed on the rotationally broadened Mg II ⋋ 4481 line of o And A are almost certainly from the spectrum of o And B which is shown to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 33 days. The speckle interferometrically measured separations of A-a and A-B indicate that the system contains at least two binaries separated by some 25 AU, based on a parallax of 0.015 ± 0.008 arcseconds. Based on this parallax the A-a separation of is about 4 AU. The two stars which make up the unresolved spectroscopic binary o And B are separated by about 0.4 AU based on an orbital solution. The periods, based on the parallax and reasonable mass estimates, for A-a and Aa-B, are on the order of four and thirty years respectively. The two stars which constitute o And B are shown to most likely be late B stars of luminosity class V-IV. After compensating for the presence in the spectrum of a contribution from component B, o And A is reclassified as B5lIIe. The spectral type of o And a is not known and no contribution to the spectrum from it is observed. High signal-to-noise time series of spectra have revealed the presence of nonradial pulsations. An intermediate order, Ɩ = 6 mode, reveals itself through moving subfea-tures in the line profiles. Line width variations are detected which probably arise from an Ɩ = 2 low order mode. The co-existence of these two modes is capable of explaining the 1.57 day photometric variations. This period is twice that of the line width variations. Rapid radial velocity variations measured from the line wings were found but the line profile variations and the nature of the light curve do not support the existence of a fifth star. The measured radial velocity variations could be a result of the underlying profile variations as opposed to motion of o And A. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Sars-Cov-2 Intra-Host Evolution in Immunocompromised Patients for the Emergence of Variants of Concerns, Including Omicron.

Bantan, Azari I. 21 July 2022 (has links)
Unexpected high mutations detected in new emerging variants of concern (VOCs) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), especially in the case of omicron, raises concerns and efforts to understand their evolutionary trajectory. Several hypotheses have been discussed in literature to conceptualize the source of their emergence, including intra-host viral evolution in immunocompromised patients. These patients grant opportunities for the emergence of new variants through a persisting virus winning against host immunity, and selection for viral mutations driven by treatment interventions. VOCs have in common high mutation rate exceeding the average rate of 1-2 mutations per month. Not many studies have investigated the evolutionary rate of SARS-CoV-2 in immunocompromised candidates. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal potential mechanisms underlying the emergence of VOCs by exploring substitution rate of SARS-CoV-2 genomes from surveyed COVID-19 immunocompromised patient’s studies. First, SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences were collected at sequential time series throughout host infection, which were reported in the previous studies. Filtration criteria was applied to reanalyze patients with prolonged infection documented for ≥ 2 months, and comprehensive sequenced samples for ≥ 6 time points. Then, phylogenetic analysis was conducted using Nextclade (https://clades.nextstrain.org/), followed by mutation rate analysis using two substantial similar approaches to calculate the rate in i) substitutions per month and ii) substitutions per site (per year). The mutation tendency of SARS-CoV-2 in immunocompromised hosts was compared to reported VOCs, particularly to omicron. The highest observed mutation rate accounted for approximately 2.2 mutations per month, which is higher than the average rate. High mutation rate was due to prolonged infection and selection pressure by treatment interventions (i.e., convalescent plasma and antibodies). Here, higher rate of intra-host viral evolution in immunocompromised patients is detected, potentially leading to the emergence of VOC. Hence, this research highlights the need for sequencing efforts in high-risk individuals, updating treatment strategies along with further analysis on adaptive mutants pronounced due to intra-host evolution. Together, such findings provide an ultimate synergy for future public health guidelines and infection control measures.

Exploring the Intersection of Physical Inactivity, Emotional Responses on Twitter, and Psychological Factors in Omicron Vaccination Decision-Making during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Marrapu, Satvika 07 1900 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how physical inactivity as a precursor to well-being, public sentiments on Twitter, and psychological factors interact to influence Omicron vaccination decisions. Essay 1 reviews the impact of physical inactivity during the pandemic on different well-being parameters, showing severe mental, physical, and economic effects. Essay 2 employs natural language processing techniques to understand the sentiment toward Omicron vaccination on Twitter and finds public opinion to be dynamic. Essay 3 furthers the exploration in the research area by looking at the psychological determinants of vaccination attitudes and examines the relationship of attitude with factors like perceived vulnerability, self-efficacy, and social influences. The conclusions of Essay 1 underline the need for interventions to promote physical activity to mitigate adverse health effects. Findings from Essay 2 show a complex interplay of emotions on social media, suggesting the need for adaptive communication strategies. Essay 3 reveals that psychological factors are significant influencers of vaccination decisions and therefore hold policy implications for enhancing vaccine confidence. Together, these studies provide evidence to inform public health strategies regarding physical inactivity, social media sentiment analysis, and psychological drivers of vaccination decision-making. This research shows that taking a comprehensive approach can improve public health outcomes in the face of ongoing and future health crises.

Testování zemních směrových ochran pomocí experimentálně získaných poruchových záznamů / Testing of Directional Earth Fault Protections Using The Experimentally Obtained Fault Records

Holub, Martin January 2014 (has links)
Master thesis Testing of Directional Earth Fault Protections Using the Experimentally Obtained Fault Records deals with the protective functions of earth fault protections during earth faults in compensated medium voltage distribution network and their testing options. At the beginning of the thesis we charakterize operation of medium voltage distribution system in general. We begin with definition and characteristics of earth fault and its compartmentalization by the type of the fault, size of the transition resistance and duration. We also mention grounding methods of node winding transformer on medium voltage distribution network and we describe the most common of them in detail, i.e. network grouded through the arc suppression coil and its operation with automatic switching auxiliary resistor. In this part of the thesis we discuss the localization of the earth fault using passive static methods in compensated systems, which include wattmetric, admittance and conductance method. In next section we deal with the fault records stored in COMTRADE file format, its structure and all elements of its configuration and data file. We create and describe an example of converting ADF file format, recorded by Yokogawa oscilloscope fault recorder, into COMTRADE file format using Microsoft Excel program and M-File created in the MATLAB program. In the practical part we introduce workspace devices and software, which includes secondary testing equipment OMICRON CMC 256plus and its software OMICRON Test Universe with Advance Transplay test module, we further describe multifunctional earth fault protection RYo from PROTECTION & CONSULTING, s. r. o. and machine terminal REM 543 from ABB and their protective functions. The last part describes the actual testing of parallel connected earth fault protection with COMTRADE fault records by Advance Transplay test module in the OMICRON Test Universe. In the conclusion we describe evaluation of the suitability of each protective functions of earth fault protection in a variety of sizes the transition resistance at the earth fault location.

Parametry kabelových vedení / Power Cables Parameters

Váša, Lukáš January 2021 (has links)
In recent years, the development trend of power grids character shows increased demand for using cables of both current overhead and newly constructed lines. In order to preserve reliable operation and to predict the maintenance requirements, it is crucial to regard not only the parameters certified by manufacturers, but also externalities induced by real environment and incorporate these externalities into cable models in simulation software. The diploma thesis deals with determining of characteristic parameters of single core cables in real environment, which are affected by real grounding methods of metal shielding. The emphasis is put on analysis of current cable models in simulation software PSCAD and its evaluation using two-step experiment 1) measurement of shunt parameters in laboratory using electronic bridge model and 2) on field measurement of cable series parameters in real environment.

Generování transientního signálu pro účely testování ochran a indikátorů poruch / Generating of the fault record for protection and fault indicator testing

Bažata, Petr January 2011 (has links)
The thesis is focused on a presentation of a model creating which is followed by the simulation of running real network with using the compensatory elements to minimize the incurred failures. This thesis is divided into two thematic parts – the first theoretical one deals with the basis structuring of short-circuit faults and more detailed study of ineffective ground connection. Particularly this part attends to the problematic of a network description with extinguishing suppression. Using the compensation minimizes the impact of the failure state. A short-term fixing of a resistor improves the function of the ground-fault protection and helps to detect the outgoing section damaged by the defect. Furthermore the thesis indicates simulation programs, compares them and chooses the most suitable one for the next practical part. This is focused on a simulation of a real network run, together with elements for an effective defect-reduction or easier detection of ground connection. As a simulation of a ground short-circuit is the model in the end of the thesis modified on a network with an effective grounded bundle. Testing of the model correctness and creating a record of a model using the real ground protection settings is also one part of this thesis.

Distanční ochrana využívající digitální vstupní data / Distance Protection Design Using Digital Input Data

Wannous, Kinan Hasan Wafaa January 2020 (has links)
V práci jsou zhodnoceny i možnosti zrychlení testování systémů chránění s využitím neuronové sítě. Závěrečná kapitola se zabývá aplikacemi v reálném čase, využívajícími data z rozvodny v blízkosti Vysokého učení technického v Brně. K přenosu dat z rozvodny do univerzitní laboratoře je zde využíváno SMV přenášených optickým kabelem o délce 16 km. Aplikace je vytvořena v programu Matlab a je schopna číst data z ethernetového portu, dekódovat je, převést z formátu ASCII do desítkové soustavy a poté vykreslit průběhy proudu a napětí. Mezi vlastnosti aplikace se řadí jednoduchost použití, schopnost implementace funkcí distanční ochrany, výpočet RMS hodnot proudu a napětí a harmonického zkreslení, harmonická analýza prostřednictvím rychlé Fourierovy transformace a výpočet impedance poruchové smyčky. Všechny výpočty běží v reálném čase a provedena je i citlivostní analýza modelu.

Ochrany při zemních spojeních / Earth Faults Protections

Ostruška, Jan January 2015 (has links)
The thesis deals with wattmetric and conductance principle of faulted feeder detection in medium voltage compensated distribution networks. These principles are analysed and tested with particular emphasis on high impedance earth faults. The first part of testing utilizes data about state of the system with earth fault, which was determined by designed static model of earth fault. The testing in the second part utilizes real records of high impedance earth faults. In both parts the wattmetric and conductance protections was presented on protective relays ABB REF 615, ABB REM 543 and Protection&Consulting RYo by means of unit OMICRON CMC 256plus. As a major result of performed tests are records of detection of particular earth faults. Based on these records it could be concluded, that functionality of protections is substantially dependent on magnitude of zero sequence voltage. Furthermore the wattmetric protections are dependent on fault resistance as well.
