Reis, Ana Paula Monteiro dos 29 August 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-04T21:02:09Z (GMT). / The main subject of this work is the semantics of denoting expressions in Frege’s and Carnap’s theories. The text is divided in three chapters. In the first one, Frege’s theory of meaning, which distinguishes between “sense” and “meaning”, is scrutinized. In the second chapter, the historical context of the Vienna Circle and the two periods which have preceded Carnap’s semantical phase is studied. Finally, in the third chapter, Tarki’s influence on Carnap and Carnap’s method of intension and extension are discussed. The main thesis of this dissertation is that although Carnap and others my be justified in criticizing Frege’s reification of truth-values, the aim of both theories should be distinguished, which is central to justify Frege’s theoretical option.

Jahrhundert

Dillström, Sibylle January 1999 (has links)

A teoria das descrições de Bertrand Russell

Cintra, Fernando Vogel January 2007 (has links)
In the present dissertation, Bertrand Russell’s theory of descriptions is analyzed, as well as Peter Strawson’s criticism of this theory. In order to better contextualize the theory of descriptions, George Moore’s theory of Platonic Atomism is firstly analyzed. This theory represents the first step of the revolt against the Hegelian influenced idealism that dominated English philosophy at the end of the 19th century. After that, Bertrand Russell’s early philosophy is outlined in its main features, that is, his philosophy from the first years of the 20th century, which may be called “logicism”, since it had, as its main theoretical purpose, the demonstration that all pure mathematics could be reduced to a few fundamental and indefinable logical notions. Subsequently, the philosophical innovation represented by Russell’s theory of descriptions is analyzed, and the manner in which it deals with important logical and philosophical problems is exhibited. One can say that Russell’s theory of descriptions is one of the most significant philosophical theories of the 20th century. After that, Peter Strawson’s criticism of the theory of descriptions is presented, as well as Russell’s rebuttal of it. The dissertation ends with a brief assessment of three fundamental points of contention between Russell and Strawson: the role of ordinary language in philosophical analysis, the truth value of propositions expressed by sentences such as “The present King of France is bald”, and the question regarding proper names.

„Davon sagen die Herren kein Wort“ : Zum pädagogischen, grammatischen und dialektologischen Schaffen Max Wilhelm Götzingers (1799–1856)

Olsson, Dan January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to comprehensively describe and evaluate the linguistic work of the German grammarian and teacher Max Wilhelm Götzinger (1799–1856). Götzinger‘s work has been little considered in linguistics and historiography of linguistics apart from some articles mainly on his grammatical theory. The first editions of Anfangsgründe (1825) and Die Deutsche Sprachlehre für Schulen (1827), which up to now have been considered to be lost, could be retrieved and used for this study. Aspects of Götzinger‘s didactics and grammar can still today be re-garded as modern. In many respects his didactic ideas were opposed to the methods of teaching inspired by rationalist grammar and prevailing in the schools of his time. His own method is inductive and the aim of teach-ing was mainly to make pupils familiar with the structure of the German language. Götzinger‘s grammatical system was inspired by his experience as a teacher. The logical judgement and the subject-predicate concepts were replaced by a verb centred concept of syntax and Götzinger‘s system of word classes began with the verb instead of the noun. He did not regard correct thinking, which was the main purpose of rationalist grammar, but communication as the basic aim of the teaching of grammar. His notion of the verb as the centre of the clause has basic features in common with modern dependency theories introduced by Lucien Tesnière. Götzinger performed pioneering work in the field of dialectology and he is understood be the first to include a comprehensive description of the dialects of the German speaking countries Even if there also are good reasons to criticise many aspects of his work, e.g. indistinct terminology, inconsistency in sticking to his theory, and subjectivity in the description of the dialects, Götzinger‘s achieve-ment as to the state of the art of his time and also with regard to modern linguistics must be considered remarkable.

Aleksandrova, Angelina 30 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis research lies in the field of nominal semantics and focuses on a sample of nouns denoting humans (HN) during different stages of life: infant, child, teenager, adult, elderly (N-[age]). It is three fold. First, this works aims at offering a linguistic description of a set of N-[age] whose operation has remained unknown until now. Demonstrating their hybrid nature - N-[age] denote both referentially essential and intrinsically transient properties - we provide novel parameters for the description of HN in general. Finally, this thesis explores the possibility of notional extension of the aspectual domain to nominal semantics by questioning the concept of phase and by demonstrating that all N-[age] have a phasal structure.
