An activity plan for Indian Road Safety

Kumar Mavoori, Arvind January 2005 (has links)
Road safety is a major issue affecting the road sector. Road accidents remain a serious impediment to sustainable human development in many of the developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Road accidents continue to be an important social and economic problem in developing countries like India. Growth in the number of motor vehicles, poor enforcement of traffic safety regulations, poor quality of roads and vehicles, and inadequate public health infrastructures are some of the road safety problems facing in India. The object of this Thesis is to present a status report on the nature of the government policy towards the Activity plans implemented till now and which has to be implemented later for the reduction of road fatalities and for the safe roads, and also giving the guidelines for financing of remedial measures, institutional framework, physical characteristics of the road, traffic control and calming measures, road safety education and enforcement issues. The aim of the Activity plans is to analyze the present situation of road safety in India and to indicate main problems in individual sector of the Activity implemented by comparing and taking the examples of some of the ASEAN Region who are successed in implementing in the individual sectors. The effect of the programme to real safety situation is estimated, and further plans could be corrected if it is necessary. Implementation of the goals for the coming years to reduce the number of accidents at maximum extent and give people, the safe and the steady flow of traffic in India. The vision of a tremendous change next 5 to 10 years is based on a big potential for improvement and a joint effort of all involved groups on all levels of traffic safety, centrally coordinated by the National Road Safety Authorities. The Action Plan is deliberately divided into 14 key Sectors of activity in broadly the same way as the individual country road safety action plans. The sectors involve many different disciplines and a very wide range of multi sector activities but all are based on applying scientific, methodical approaches to the problem. At the end the thesis gives the recommendations and conclusion for the safe Roads in India

Σκλήβα, Παρασκευή 05 February 2015 (has links)
This master thesis aims to study road accidents and identify hotspots at Western Greece Region. First, accidents occurred during 2000 - 2012 at Achaia, Aitoloakarnania and Ilia prefectures were recorded. Each record includes date, time, number of fatalities and injuries, specific location, road and environmental conditions at the moment of the accident. Collected data were grouped and analyzed statistically. Then after reviewing several numerical and statistical methods for hazardous location identification, a selection of methods was made and were applied in order to identify hotspots for some parts of the national road network. Subsequently, conclusions about the condition of the Western Greece Region road network, and the causes of accidents were derived. Finally, proposals for treatment and future research were made.

This research presents a study about the contributing factors of road accidents in order to provide evidences to analyse the behaviour of contributing factors involved in these accidents more specifically in critical sections. The intention is to identify the relationship between those factors and the severity degree of an accident (material damage, no fatalities and fatalities) and the impact of each factor class on an accident occurrence. The aim is to base on geospatial analysis taking into account statistical and cartographic techniques and contribute to improve the quality of the road safety information in the country which has a current critical scene. The methodological structure of this thesis consists of following three main steps: (I) Identification and determination of critical sections segments, (II) mapping “road” contributing factors for each accident and (III) Investigation and study of the contributing factors. Four sections of highways in the west of São Paulo state were chosen as the study area. In Step I, proposed a spatial interpolation method to choose critical sections segments premising the existence of geographical dependence of the considered accidents. In entire, eight critical sections segments were identified in the study area. Step II focused on mapping the contributing factors of these segments. This step brought the technological character to this research by making use of geotechnologies integration and the contribution of Cartographic Sciences to road safety by generating information of the contributing factors location from mapping. Of the four factors classes (human, environment, vehicle and road), the road characteristics were chosen to be mapped, since no data from this factor class was found in both the accident database and the occurrence report. The relation with the other three factors classes was the subject of step III, which results provided a ranking of the six most frequent contributing factors in critical sections segments. In addition, three ordinal logistic regression models were constructed to investigate the impact of each of the four factors classes on the accident severity degree (three severity degrees). For this, the severity degree was considered as the models dependent variable. Four significant independent variables (contributing factors) were chosen to compose the following models: drug consumption (from the human contributing factor class), tire condition (vehicle factor class), vegetation (road factor class) and signaling (road factor class). Lastly, the models could be analysed by the odds ratio method to complement the information and synthesize the results as research contributions.

Vliv systému "člověk - technika - prostředí" na bezpečnost silničního provozu. / The Influence of the System "Human {--} Vehicle {--} Environment" on the Road Safety

NUNVÁŘ, Jiří January 2007 (has links)
This student thesis deals with problems of the causes of road accidents and injury in the Czech Republic, and with the possibilities of their elimination. The human is the most dangerous factor of the transportation system. This resulted in the analysis of the causes of road accidents. The safety of the human factor depends on the experience of the driver, appreciating of danger, attention paid to the driving of vehicle, and on the stress of the road-traffic. The basis of the effective accident prevention are traffic safety precautions.
