SCORM based learning management system for online training

Master of Science / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Mitchell Neilsen / The Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI) facility at Kansas State University is a huge biocontainment facility to conduct research on infectious diseases that pose a threat to plant, animal and human health. The BRI Training and Education Program is currently offline; i.e., classroom sessions are taken to provide this training and education. The objective behind taking up this project was to move the entire training and education module of Biosecurity Research Institute online, instead of having a classroom session for each training course, with an subject matter expert (SME) to come and take the training session. The aim is to develop an online training system which is synchronized with the information in the BRI Research Project Database. The employees will only have to login to the website, scroll through the list of courses they are enrolled in, take the courses, write the assignments/quizzes assigned to the course and then submit the quizzes. They can also self-enroll themselves into courses, if they are given the permission to do so. The SME’s of the courses can create new courses, upload the course materials, enroll users into the courses, and assign deadlines to course completion. Once the student submits the course quiz or assignments, the SME’s can grade the quiz, assign a final grade to the students, and give feedback on their performance. They can even reassign the course in case of poor performance by the student. The administrators of the website can assign roles to different personnel, give permissions according to need and requirement, add/delete courses, and change the appearance of the website. The project is to be done using a Learning Management System called Moodle. Moodle (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an online learning management system designed to allow interaction between teachers and students. The back-end database used is SQL Server 2008 R2 and additional tools used are Adobe Presenter (with Microsoft Power Point 2010) to create the courses in SCORM format.

L’influence d’Internet est profonde dans la vie personnelle et sociale, mais aussi dans le domaine éducatif. La révolution e-learning décrit la tendance de ces dernières années adoptée par le domaine de la formation. Le domaine de la santé doit s’adapter à cette nouvelle réalité en adoptant des outils numériques et en proposant la formation en ligne. Dans cette perspective, ce projet de recherche décrit le processus d’adaptation d’un programme de formation aux habiletés parentales destiné aux parents d’enfants avec autisme, dans une version en ligne. Ce projet de recherche est une monographie décrivant les étapes nécessaires pour la proposition de ce programme de formation parentale dans une version en ligne. En adoptant la méthode de la recherche design en éducation nous nous basons sur des théories et des concepts pertinents que nous utilisons pour notre contribution pratique ; celle de la conception pédagogique et de l’implantation d’un prototype mis à la disposition des utilisateurs. / The Internet has deeply influenced our personal and social life, as well as the educational field. The e-learning revolution refers to recent advances in the educational field and the usage of digital tools for teaching and the delivery of educational content. The field of health can profit by adapting to this new reality and by adopting digital tools suitable to offer online training. From this perspective, this research project describes the process of developing an online adaptation of a psycho-educational program targeted to parents of children with autism disorder. This thesis is a monograph describing the steps required to design and implement this training program in an online version. By adopting the method of Educational Design Research, we investigate relevant theories and concepts that are later used to guide our practical contribution : the instructional design and implementation of a prototype, that is implemented and tested with the first users.

Interprofessional Patient Simulation Training Compared to Online Training for learning to use In-Line Speaking Valves

Restoring speech in persons who are tracheostomy and ventilator dependent, through the use of a Passy-Muir Speaking Valve (PMSV), requires specific training. Methods of training interprofessional team members to assess in-line PMSVs are unclear. This study used a pretest/ post-test design to compare effects of online training and online training plus simulation training on knowledge acquisition, skills performance, and comfort levels when working with persons who are tracheostomy and ventilator dependent. Twenty-six students studying either respiratory therapy (N=13) or speech-language pathology (N=13) were assigned to the control group or experimental group. Results revealed that online training proved beneficial for increasing tracheostomy and ventilator knowledge. Participants who underwent simulation training reported greater levels of comfort and demonstrated more efficient skills performance during simulation post-testing. Simulation training is efficacious to train interprofessional teams how to properly assess this population for use of in-line PMSVs.

Technology providers understand that almost all companies from banks to cell phone carriers are challenged to be synchronized with the evolution of their products.Failure to understand and utilize new developments, especially with hardware and software, is detrimental to any corporation. One of the biggest challenges high-tech companies face, is the ability to enhance their current training modules. Moreover, in the education process, companies could miss the opportunity of extracting valuable information from their own products and services. . The objective of this thesis is to highlight the importance of investing in the growth of knowledge transfer models. It will assess current methods of communication to provide recommendations of the most efficient vehicles in education. The investigation performed also targets possible solutions to help strengthen the feedback and vital information that can be gathered during the process of coaching. . The context of this research is to provide a suggested tool that should be implemented by technology companies to increase the efficacy of training modules. Information found in the text was drawn from research literature on knowledge transfer.The ideas diffused in this paper are intended to plant a seed in key areas of communication that directly impact the bottom line of a business. My ultimate goal is to have high-tech companies utilize the recommended models to transfer knowledge and, at the same time, acquire valuable information. New Tools for Training News Reporters: An interactive Scoring e-Textbook Based on Online Assessment

This research develops a new approach to the development of training inexperienced journalists in news writing using a web-based platform of instruction delivery. E-training is growing in the world as an instructional setting, and offers not only financial benefits, but also a range of specific advantages over the traditional classroom type of setting. Such advantages include the ability to personalise the content of training to the trainees' current competencies, to facilitate regular multi-faceted monitoring of the changes in these competencies and to combine learning with the immediate practising of what was learned. Two e-training tools have been created and validated in this research: the news text assessment system (NTA) - a comprehensive and effective online scoring rubric, i.e. a matrix describing different levels of competency in several dimensions of the assessed performance - to assess the quality of news writing; and a scoring e-textbook (SET), an asynchronous news writing training tool. The SET is built around the NTA as its core element and contains hundreds of self-learning modules including exercises, examples, instructional texts, and quizzes to be used in a non-linear fashion according to the specific needs of trainees. Both the exercises and the NTA are elements of corrective feedback, which in psychological literature has been shown to be most effective in changing the subsequent performance of trainees. The two tools help both the trainee and the instructor. They assist the instructor to identify and address journalists' weak and absent competencies in news writing and consistently upgrade the learning modules when needed. They help trainees to monitor their progress and to learn from their own mistakes in the short periods of spare time they have during their work or in other time they can spare for the training. To create the NTA, 53 top journalism experts, both practitioners and academics, used the prototype of the assessment rubric with 30 criteria of news writing to assess the quality of several supplied news stories. The results were then subjected to statistical analysis and the NTA rubric was created as a compromise between its comprehensiveness and user-friendliness. To evaluate the NTA and the SET, an experiment was conducted with journalists in one post-Communist country in the form of an action research project, where this researcher was also the instructor. The experiment consisted of four months of training and reflection on its results by both the journalists and the researcher. The results show improvement in news writing competencies to an internationally 'acceptable' news writing standard for most of the trainees. The suggested tools have been well received and the trainees appreciated the interactivity that was provided during the training.

Offline and Online Adaboost for Detecting Anatomic Structures

abstract: Detecting anatomical structures, such as the carina, the pulmonary trunk and the aortic arch, is an important step in designing a CAD system of detection Pulmonary Embolism. The presented CAD system gets rid of the high-level prior defined knowledge to become a system which can easily extend to detect other anatomic structures. The system is based on a machine learning algorithm --- AdaBoost and a general feature --- Haar. This study emphasizes on off-line and on-line AdaBoost learning. And in on-line AdaBoost, the thesis further deals with extremely imbalanced condition. The thesis first reviews several knowledge-based detection methods, which are relied on human being's understanding of the relationship between anatomic structures. Then the thesis introduces a classic off-line AdaBoost learning. The thesis applies different cascading scheme, namely multi-exit cascading scheme. The comparison between the two methods will be provided and discussed. Both of the off-line AdaBoost methods have problems in memory usage and time consuming. Off-line AdaBoost methods need to store all the training samples and the dataset need to be set before training. The dataset cannot be enlarged dynamically. Different training dataset requires retraining the whole process. The retraining is very time consuming and even not realistic. To deal with the shortcomings of off-line learning, the study exploited on-line AdaBoost learning approach. The thesis proposed a novel pool based on-line method with Kalman filters and histogram to better represent the distribution of the samples' weight. Analysis of the performance, the stability and the computational complexity will be provided in the thesis. Furthermore, the original on-line AdaBoost performs badly in imbalanced conditions, which occur frequently in medical image processing. In image dataset, positive samples are limited and negative samples are countless. A novel Self-Adaptive Asymmetric On-line Boosting method is presented. The method utilized a new asymmetric loss criterion with self-adaptability according to the ratio of exposed positive and negative samples and it has an advanced rule to update sample's importance weight taking account of both classification result and sample's label. Pink and Dude Chefs: Efficacy of an Online Train-the-Trainer Mechanism and Student Program Outcomes

Background: The rate of overweight and obesity among adolescents aged 12-19 years has quadrupled since 1980. Reducing obesity is a key public health priority, as obesity is associated with individual and population-level health and economic consequences. Afterschool-based obesity prevention programs that aim to develop nutrition and culinary self-efficacy have shown promise. However, the level of aptitude among program instructors is directly correlated with student success, suggesting the importance of effective train-the-trainer (TTT) mechanisms for implementing and scaling up these strategies. Pink and Dude Chefs (PDC) is an afterschool nutrition education and culinary skills program for middle-school adolescents aged between 11-14 years. The PDC online TTT platform trains lay instructors on program content and preparation, lesson delivery, and classroom and kitchen safety. Trained instructors deliver PDC lessons on topics ranging from macronutrients and USDA MyPlate to knife skills and food preparation. The literature on online TTT models and instructor impact on student outcomes is limited and the PDC online training mechanism has not been evaluated. The current project sought to address these critical gaps with the aim of creating the most effective intervention model. Methods: This project was implemented in Santa Maria, Guadalupe, and New Cuyama, California from Fall 2015 to Spring 2016. Eleven instructors and 68 middle school students participated and comprehensive surveys were used to evaluate instructor and student outcomes. Results: Instructors’ performance on all three domains (food and kitchen safety, program knowledge, and overall knowledge) increased following training (45%, 63%, and 53%, respectively), all p≤0.01. Students outcomes (food and kitchen safety, nutrition knowledge, and overall knowledge) also improved following participation (14%, 33%, and 23%, respectively), all p≤0.001. Impact analyses revealed that students with instructors who scored high in overall knowledge performed better than students with low-scoring instructors (p=0.01). Conclusion: If obesity prevention programs that incorporate online TTT mechanisms, such as PDC, continue to show promising outcomes for both instructors and adolescents, larger scale efforts may contribute to decreasing the public health and economic burdens associated with obesity.

The Use of an Interactive Online Tutorial for Camera Operators at BYU Broadcasting

This report describes the purpose, analysis, design, development, and evaluation of a web-based tutorial to train student television camera operators for BYU Broadcasting at Brigham Young University. The report includes the results from audience and needs analyses, the rationale for the instructional approach, reviews of existing instructional materials, and reviews of instructional theory and practice literature. It also describes multiple evaluation activities for the tutorial and a critique of the project. The audience and needs analyses found that an interactive, web-based tutorial would be an appropriate delivery method for the instruction. The instructional literature review supports the project's instructional and evaluation methodologies, especially its extensive use of rapid prototyping. The evaluation report describes multiple iterations with paper and electronic prototypes and a field test with 11 target audience members. This report describes how testing and revision iterations led to multiple improvements in the product, and a pre- and posttest administered during the field test demonstrated a significant increase in the intended learning outcomes. The projects exemplified many strengths and pleased the stakeholders, although further improvements in the instruction, assessment, and evaluation could have been implemented with more time and resources.
