The evaluation of academic electronic bulletin boards for communication and training : HCI factors in the UK and Saudi Arabia

Sulaiman, Mubarak S. A. January 1994 (has links)
Electronic networks services have become essential tools for the academic community. One of the services provided has been academic electronic bulletin boards (EBBs), and the use of EBBs has increased dramatically during the last decade. One question concerns the possible application of EBBs as a means both for communication and for remote training. A series of experiments were conducted during 1991, 1992, and 1993 with the aim of examining the use of EBBs for these purposes. The first experiment was carried out to investigate whether users experience problems in using EBBs. The next extended this to see how students evaluated EBBs for communication and training purposes. The main focus of the work was BUBL. After this second experiment, modifications were made to the BUBL data and a further experiment was carried out. A different group of students looked at the modified material, and also compared it with US data using different software. The fourth experiment compared the usability of a menu-based interface (dBase III +) and a hypertext interface (HyperCard) from a student's viewpoint. It was followed by an investigation of icons to find out how well different icons could be recognised and the possibility of using them for language-independent instructions. Finally, the characteristics and problems of GULFNET users were examined. The evaluation has demonstrated the general acceptability of EBBs and their likely value for training purposes. This leads to a discussion of how an EBB might best be developed for use in communication and training on GULFNET.

Dumont, Angela 09 1900 (has links)
Children with disabilities often need extra support to promote their social integration and well-being in day camps (Brookman, 2003; Edwards & Smith, 1989; Murphy et al., 2008; Siperstein, 2009). To meet this need, counsellors that support children with disabilities must have adequate training to prepare them for this role (Baldwin et al., 2010; Ko et al., 2012; Lawrence et al., 2006; Wahl-Alexander, 2017; Waller et al., 2017). The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a synchronous training and a self-guided online training on the skills and well-being of 34 counsellors using a randomized controlled trial. The social validity of the self-guided online training was also compared to the one of the synchronous training. The results show that there were no differences in the basic skills or the psychological well-being of the participants when comparing both training modalities. Social validity scores were also similar across both groups. The results of this Master’s thesis suggest that the self-guided online training would be at least equivalent to the synchronous training. However, studies with larger sample sizes are needed to replicate these findings. Implications for the field of psychoeducation include initial support for the use of new and diversified intervention methods.

Characterizing and controlling program behavior using execution-time variance

Kumar, Tushar 27 May 2016 (has links)
Immersive applications, such as computer gaming, computer vision and video codecs, are an important emerging class of applications with QoS requirements that are difficult to characterize and control using traditional methods. This thesis proposes new techniques reliant on execution-time variance to both characterize and control program behavior. The proposed techniques are intended to be broadly applicable to a wide variety of immersive applications and are intended to be easy for programmers to apply without needing to gain specialized expertise. First, we create new QoS controllers that programmers can easily apply to their applications to achieve desired application-specific QoS objectives on any platform or application data-set, provided the programmers verify that their applications satisfy some simple domain requirements specific to immersive applications. The controllers adjust programmer-identified knobs every application frame to effect desired values for programmer-identified QoS metrics. The control techniques are novel in that they do not require the user to provide any kind of application behavior models, and are effective for immersive applications that defy the traditional requirements for feedback controller construction. Second, we create new profiling techniques that provide visibility into the behavior of a large complex application, inferring behavior relationships across application components based on the execution-time variance observed at all levels of granularity of the application functionality. Additionally for immersive applications, some of the most important QoS requirements relate to managing the execution-time variance of key application components, for example, the frame-rate. The profiling techniques not only identify and summarize behavior directly relevant to the QoS aspects related to timing, but also indirectly reveal non-timing related properties of behavior, such as the identification of components that are sensitive to data, or those whose behavior changes based on the call-context.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TeseCALM.pdf: 3676498 bytes, checksum: 7f77efc72ad152e847d7d4f2f37fbe2b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-24 / Não recebi financiamento / The reflexions of this study are embedded in a context of continuing training in-school developed under the Online Training Program of Mentors (known as PFOM). It is a set of issues related to teachers of basic education, both teachers' trainers (TT) and beginning teachers (BT). The questions are related to training needs and professional learning (and consequently professional development) of these educators. The central questions were: Considering the development of PFOM, TT mobilized what knowledge, from those indicated in the literature as appropriate to their role? These professionals have presented training needs related to activities concerning the mentorship process? Which were them? Do these needs relate to those reported by the BT followed up? The main objective was: identify the training needs of the TT of PFOM and understand the relation between the knowledge mobilized in their acting as mentors. Methodological design was carried out through qualitative approach having as research object narratives produced by TT and by BT during the participation in the PFOM. Data were analyzed using the content analysis techniques supported by the ATLAS.ti software. Results evidenced that, although the guiding principles of PFOM were the same, each trainer has developed his own interpretations about mentorship processes. Such interpretations were influenced by realities and contexts of individual performances, as well as by tasks performed by these teachers. We identified that during their performance as mentors, TT mobilized the following set of knowledge: i) being able to understand the demands of BT; ii) know to analyse the steps of the training process; iii) know to seek information and make partnerships; iv) know to organize reflections and communications on training practices; v) knowledge of experience, the ability to act in the face of educational practices; vi) know to organize training strategies; vii) know to learn from the relationship between trainer and BT; viii) know to have a good interpersonal relationship. Apparently, TT and BT have presented different training needs. Training needs voiced by TT while performing the role of mentors were configured in the context of management and establishment and organization of strategies in the face of adult education. BT training needs were linked to: indiscipline, literacy, classroom management, inclusion and curriculum of early childhood education. Mentorship contributed to disruption of difficulties faced in the continuing training in-school, allowing a more horizontal formation with the participation of both parties (trainer and subject) in the structuring of the processes. It also met the real needs of participants. Since it is very difficult for a single professional to handle working alone in the training of teachers, it was clear the importance of mobilizing partnerships within the networks and/or educational systems and within school itself. Establishment of support networks proved to be fundamental to meet the training demands presented and favour the processes of continuing training in-service.

Evaluating e-Training for public library staff: A quasi-experimental investigation.

Dalston, Teresa 08 1900 (has links)
A comparative evaluation framework of instructional interventions for implementation of online training for public library staff would enable a better understanding of how to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and efficacy of training in certain training environments. This dissertation describes a quasi-experimental study of a two-week, asynchronous online training course that was provided at four levels of instructional intervention to public library staff in the United States. The course content addressed the complex issues of difficult patron policy development and situational coping techniques. The objective of the study was to develop and demonstrate a theoretically grounded, evidence-based impact evaluation framework. The framework was used to assess the relative impact of an online course for public librarians at four levels of instructional intervention. The researcher investigated the relationships between the type of e-Training instructional interventions and the short- and long-term impacts on participants' knowledge, self-efficacy, and workplace performance. The study used a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design that included a pretest, posttest and three-month delayed posttest with follow-up survey. 194 participants completed all three phases of the study. The evaluation tools measured course content related knowledge and self-efficacy at all three phases (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest) and assessed workplace application of training at 3-month follow-up. The results of this study contributed to evaluation theory and learning theory literature applied to the online learning environment and informed public library staff online training practices and evaluation methodologies.

Jackson, Mathieu 02 1900 (has links)
This qualitative case study focuses on how pedagogical discourse is developped in an online course development process. Data was collected during a series of semi-directed interviews with different actors of this process and analyzed using the three rules of Basil Bernstein’s pedagogical device : distributive rules, recontextualisation rules and evaluation rules. We present certain problems inherent to this online course development process, including questions relating to the quality of education, the conditions of workers, the legitimacy of a teaching program and the eventual impact of such a process on the nature of knowledge which is taught.
