Explore of Open Source Business Model¡GA Case Study of Potix CorporationLee, Heng-Fu 07 July 2009 (has links)
The thesis is a case study of a open-source software company, Potix. It has developed an application named ZK that is a software platform for programmers to create Ajax programs. The case study includes the company history and the impact of open source communities on the company growth. The research findings will provide valuable ideas on operations and interactions between the open-source software company and the virtual communities.
The applications developed by open source communities allow user to participate for developing or debugging. For those software companies to adopt open-source strategy to develop software, the overhead cost is low and the applications can be spread fast, widely and internationally. The companies need actively interact with open source community members who help to promote these communities and become contributors. They help to support the communities by writing tutorials and translating the operating manuals to different languages. Users may interact with other users in the online forums for communication, sharing or learning. Maintaining good relationships with the open source community members is important for the company to grow steadily. The virtual communities can help the diffusion of software applications so to increase sale revenues and profits.

A Cast Study in the Micro-entrepreneurships and Business models by Taiwan¡¦s Open Source Software FirmChuang, Tzu-wei 08 September 2009 (has links)
This paper, based on case study method of Taiwan¡¦s OSS Firm - Potix Technology Co., Ltd., is conducted in one organization through literature reviewed, documentations collected and analysed, and the researchers¡¦ observations and participation involved. The paper conceptually develops a model of micro-entrepreneurships with substantial literatures that support the six dimensions including entrepreneurs/teams, opportunities, resources, environment, process, and performance. This paper building on a framework of business models including product innovation, customer relationship, infrastructure management, financial aspects. As a result, the researchers provide the basis for further research upon the management and advancement of micro-entrepreneurships.
The contribution of this study:
1.One organization through literature reviewed of micro-enterprise, open source, business models.
2.To use a real business case as an example to analyze the open-source software company that Micro-entrepreneurships issues involved.
3.Proposed "opportunities - value" of the bull¡¦s-eye diagram concept.
4.One systematic organization of the case study for micro-entrepreneurship development course and characteristics of various stages, copyright type, business model.

Open source : evaluation of database modeling CASEOthman, Bassam January 2003 (has links)

Open source software is becoming increasingly popular and many organizations are using them, such as apache (used by over 50% of the world’s web servers) and Linux (a popular operating system). There exist mixed opinions about the quality of this type of software.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate quality of open source CASE-tools and compare it with quality of proprietary CASE-tools. The evaluation concerns tools used for database modeling, where the DDL-generation capabilities of these tools are studied. The study is performed as a case study where one open source (two, after experiencing some difficulties with the first tool) and one proprietary tool are studied.

The results of this study indicate that open source database modeling CASE-tools are not ready to challenge proprietary tools. However software developed as open source usually evolve rapidly (compared to proprietary software) and a more mature open source tool could emerge in the near future.

Data-mining the Ubuntu Linux Distribution for bug analysis and resolutionArges, Christopher John 27 November 2012 (has links)
The Ubuntu Linux Distribution represents a massive investment of time and human effort to produce a reliable computing experience for users. To accomplish these goals, software bugs must be tracked and fixed. However, as the number of users increase and bug reports grow advanced tools such as data mining must be used to increase the effectiveness of all contributors to the project. Thus, this report involved collecting a large amount of bug reports into a database and calculating relevant statistics. Because of the diversity and quantity of bug reports, contributors must find which bugs are most relevant and important to work on. One study in this report created an automatic way to determine who is best fit to solve a particular bug by using classification techniques. In addition, this report explores how to initially classify if a bug report will be eventually marked invalid or not. / text

Interactive engagement with an open source community : a study of the relationships between organizations and an open source software communitySims, Jonathan Paul 29 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation theoretically develops and empirically tests a model of interactive firm engagement with an open source software community. An inductive pilot study and subsequent interview analysis suggest that the nature of the relationship between a firm and an open source community varies in the degree by which a firm both "takes from" and "gives to" the community. I propose that a firm will experience direct effects from both giving to and taking from the community, and further propose that the interaction of these two behaviors, which I call interactive engagement, will lead to three firm-level consequences: an increase in the number of new products, higher levels of incremental (as opposed to radical) innovation, and shortened development and debug time. I test these hypotheses using regression analysis of questionnaire responses collected from 250 organizations that work with a popular open source software community. / text

Open Source Library Management SoftwaresRandhawa, Sukhwinder 05 1900 (has links)
Open source software are those which permit execution, copy, read, distribution and improvement of the software without any restrictions. Library Management Software (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. Commercial library management software are very expensive. Therefore, open source library management system can be appropriate alternatives for automatic library systems. This paper discusses features of open source library management software, criteria of selection of best open source library management software, their, advantages and limitations. Open source library management software is a solution to reduce that cost. The paper describes in brief about the feature of some of the open source library management software like Koha, NewGenlib, Evergreen, SENAYAN, ABCD, and BiblioteQ.

Open Source Software for Creation of Digital Library: A Comparative Study of Greenstone Digital Library Software & DSpaceRandhawa, Sukhwinder 12 1900 (has links)
Softwares now-a-days have become the life line of modern day organizations. Organizations cannot think of doing their tasks effectively and efficiently without softwares. The extremely competitive environment, zero deficiency and enhanced productivity has made it mandatory for the organizations to carefully choose the appropriate software after comprehensive needs assessment. Softwares simply their tasks and saves a lot of precious time which can be utilized in managing other important issues. Libraries also need softwares if they want to create a parallel digital library with features which we may not find in a traditional library. There are several open source softwares available to create a digital library. For this, firstly the library professionals should be aware of the advantages of open source software and should involve in their development. They should have basic knowledge about the selection, installation and maintenance. Open source software requires a greater degree of computing responsibility than commercial software. Digitization involves huge money to create and maintain and the OSS appears to be a means to reduce it. Among these, DSpace and Greenstone are becoming more popular in India and abroad. This paper deals with the comparison of these two popular OSS from various points of view. The comparative table may help the professionals who are planning to create a digital library.
