Open Source Library Management Softwares

Randhawa, Sukhwinder 05 1900 (has links)
Open source software are those which permit execution, copy, read, distribution and improvement of the software without any restrictions. Library Management Software (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. Commercial library management software are very expensive. Therefore, open source library management system can be appropriate alternatives for automatic library systems. This paper discusses features of open source library management software, criteria of selection of best open source library management software, their, advantages and limitations. Open source library management software is a solution to reduce that cost. The paper describes in brief about the feature of some of the open source library management software like Koha, NewGenlib, Evergreen, SENAYAN, ABCD, and BiblioteQ.

Status of Information and Communication Technologies in Academic Libraries in Central Uganda

Acanit, Mary January 2016 (has links)
Library users are constantly expecting new services, which puts tremendous pressure on academic libraries to re-organise their work patterns and devise better ways of service delivery in order to remain relevant. Although there are a lot of developments taking place in terms of information and communication technology (ICT), academic libraries in Sub- Saharan Africa are at different levels of ICT deployment both between different countries and within the same countries. The aim of this study is to determine the status of ICTs in Academic libraries in Central Uganda. The descriptive study employs a survey methodology gathering both quantitative and qualitative data. Data was collected from library staff responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of ICT at 17 of the 22 academic libraries in Central Uganda using survey questionnaires and interviews over a period of twelve months. Findings indicate that there is an improvement in the status of ICTs in academic libraries in Central Uganda although they are deployed at a minimum level. Funding, power fluctuations and low bandwidth still pose a major threat to ICT adoption in academic libraries in Central Uganda. This report informs government, libraries, LIS schools, LIS professional bodies and policy makers on the future course of action regarding ICT deployment and curricula. Notably, there is need for government to support infrastructural development; engage in public-private partnerships for infrastructural developments; exempt taxation of ICT equipment and supplement funding at universities. Libraries should dedicate more funds to purchase ICT equipment; automate all library functions; develop local capacity to manage ICT projects; promote awareness about ICT services and support initiatives from local and international library associations. LIS schools should conduct a curriculum review to reposition the LIS study program to the present and future needs of the job market; monitor and advice government on policy issues affecting higher education include the need to align ICTs to national development. LIS professional bodies need to champion the cause for the standardization of LIS study programs, promote networking and knowledge sharing; articulate national e-strategies and play advisory role to government, LIS schools and libraries. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Carnegie Corporation of New York / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Staff assessment of the success of the integrated library system : the case of the University of Ghana Library System

Atua-Ntow, Cynthia January 2016 (has links)
Library automation in Ghana began barely 13 years ago with the University of Ghana Balme Library being the first to start automation in 2003. Library automation is attained by means of a specific type of information system, an integrated library system (ILS). Given that modern academic libraries rely heavily on their ILS to meet user needs, the success of the ILS is vital. In 1999 Farajpahlou published a set of 26 criteria to assess the success of ILS in university libraries that was subsequently validated in both developing and developed countries (Iran and Australia). In this case study of the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS) Farajpahlou‟s original set of criteria was assessed for applicability and used to assess the success of the UGLS by surveying 28 randomly selected library managers, IT specialists and selected paraprofessionals who work with the UGLS ILS. The study showed that, in the opinion of these respondents, the UGLS ILS conclusively satisfies 13 out of the 16 criteria accepted by the research respondents out of the 26 criteria that constitute the Farajpahlou (1999, 2002) success criteria. This outcome suggests that the UGLS ILS may not be conclusively deemed to be successful. Furthermore, the study also suggests that, although Farajpahlou‟s success criteria can serve as a basis for the assessment of ILS success in academic libraries, some criteria may need to be altered or removed and additional criteria added to make it a more robust set of criteria to assess ILS success globally. This research contributes to studies that seek to assess the success of library automation in academic libraries in Ghana and also contribute to the development of potentially suitable success assessment criteria, which may be of value to both researchers and practitioners. Doménová ontologie pro oblast automatizace knihoven / Library Automation Domain Ontology

Cerniňáková, Eva January 2022 (has links)
The dissertation focuses on library automation. It examines relationships between the field of library automation and library management systems and the needs of libraries in relation to the process of library software selection. The main goal of the dissertation has been to create a library automation domain ontology and to develop tools to support a decision-making process of library software selection. The domain ontology has been created; it describes the field of library automation in relation to library systems, which are set in the broader context of the field of library automation and are regarded in terms of needs of libraries in connection to library software change. To obtain terms for ontology entity names both quantitative and mixed research methods were used, namely the analysis of scholarly texts on library automation and library systems; text analyses were performed using Voyant Tools software. Object properties and relationships among entities in ontology are based on the results of a qualitative survey of the needs of libraries in relation to the library management software. Based on the domain ontology, flowcharts have been created that illustrate the library's decision-making process when selecting a library management system. During the work on the dissertation, a methodological...

Collaborative building and sharing on the integrated library systems of elementary schools in Taoyuan

Hsu , Jung Hung Unknown Date (has links)
Due to a lack of human resources, funding, and technical support for library automation, elementary school libraries have fallen much behind other types of school libraries in the development of library automation. To address this problem, Ministry of Education launched the “National Reading Promotion and Library Management System Website” in 2010. This system can assist elementary school libraries in promotion of reading and implementation of library automation. Its goal is to achieve co-construction of library systems and sharing of resources through the network. In order to understand the practical usage of the “National Reading Promotion and Library Management System Website” in elementary school libraries and acceptance of this website among librarians, this study investigated libraries of public elementary schools in Taoyuan County and applied the modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to evaluate practical usage of this system. The methodology was based on survey and interview. The survey was administered to directors of 188 public elementary school libraries in Taoyuan County to understand users’ perceptions and usage intentions. The interview was conducted to explore factors behind user attitude, which could make up the insufficiency of survey data and increase the value of research findings. Results showed that the “National Reading Promotion and Library Management System Website” has significantly enhanced the percentage of library automation among elementary school libraries. However, the huge number of users of the system and their concentration of usage of the system in certain hours have resulted in a reduction of system connection quality, affecting the normal functioning of the system. Besides, insufficient education training and poor service quality of the system provider have also lowered user satisfaction with the system. With regard to “reading promotion”, the system’s functions are not conformed to the practical situations of reading promotion among elementary schools. As a result, the utility of these functions is low among most schools. Therefore, this study suggested that the authority concerned enhance user satisfaction and achieve the goals of the system by improving system connection quality, education training, and service quality first.

Saorín Pérez, Tomás 09 March 2006 (has links)
The role of information technology as a critical agent of change in public library information services, in the environment of infornation society, is studied, considering the redefinition of libraries social functions and services. First of all, it's presents a terminological survey of modern libraries trends (digital library, electronic library, virtual library, hybrid library). Hybrid library is selected as a valid conceptual framework for this work: library services in digital context. Library automation and technologies concepts and applications are reviewed, focusing in library systems, which match into a classic model of library automation. Information retrieval and public information features (Opac) are studied in-depth, in order to compare it with recent development in the information market for libraries and significant digital ibraries projects. The strategic role of information technologies management is presented as a requirement for understanding the complex interrelation between services and technologies. It's also analysed the two technological context that have a greater potential of influence in library systems: In one hand the Groupware and Workflow, and in the aher hand internet virtual communities and portals. Also is described the different points of view about digital information systems architecture, introducing the concept of Net-Library, as an organizational view of libraries in interaction inside an infomation and social environment. A new conceptual framework of library systems is defined, with extended functionalities derived of social and technological changes about information services, denominated Extended Library System. It's structured in two leve ls: application and product. The first level describes the modules of an library management and infonnation system application. The second one is dedicated to fue public information project requirements of a library portal. Finally it presents structured indicators to evaluate extended automation, as well as elements to model hybrid libraries information technologies project

Tonding, Fabiana John January 2018 (has links)
Library services platforms (LSP) are the new genre of library management systems. They manage all type of materials that belong to the libraries collections today - printed, electronic and digital. These systems are being used by libraries all over the world since 2012, but not yet in Brazil. The new systems are provided through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model and multi-tenant architecture. This new disruptive technology changes the current workflow processes involving the library and the information technology areas. The adoption of a modern, new and recent system requires a clear vision about its benefits to justify the decision and the necessary financial support to the institution managers. Many earlier studies have found relations between the information system success and the end users satisfaction. The aim of this research is to study the adoption of a library services platform phenomenon based on the perceptions and evaluations of its end users, through a qualitative approach and applying a case study method. The data collection was performed through documental research and interviews with the staff of the University of Surrey Library (Guilford, England), which uses the Alma library services platform The interview script followed the model of antecendents of end users satisfaction formation proposed by Au, Ngai e Cheng (2008) and seeks to confirm the main and determinant constructs of the library staff users´ satisfaction or dissatisfaction regarding the management system used. The research concludes that the system quality is the highest satisfaction construct among LSP users, while system support quality can be improved. It demonstrates that equitable work performance fulfillment is relevant for the users, and despite their inputs and efforts, the benefits are considered valuable. The respondents´ narratives highlight that the library services platform implementation changes the usual way of doing things, establishes new and improved workflows and creates interfaces between departments and activities. This processs affects the organizational status quo and permeates interpersonal relations in the workplace, which requires a strong motivational strategy.
