In considering the environment of a public library as a living organism, constantly changing, which changes and turns towards the development of society, hybrid spaces are considered, where traditional and digital technologies are complementary. In this context, the application of information management strategies in hybrid library provides to its organizational structures the development of public policies favorable to the development of communities, in that it contributes to the smooth functioning of the institution. The problem of this research was linked to the potential that the hybrid libraries provide to society. From this perception, a link between hybrid environments, informational management and development process of communities was established through public libraries. The objective was to verify how the hybrid libraries, through their public policies, technologies and organizational structures can offer development strategies of communities in which are inserted. The research was characterized by a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory nature, and the Multiple Case Study method was used to compare the contexts of the hybrid libraries in the United Kingdom and Brazil. Content Analysis was a strategic tool used to establish the basic categories for data exploration, through a literature review in the Information Science literature about the similarities and differences between the concept of "hybridity" and the structural environment of the public library. Some similarities between the UK and Brazilian libraries are closely linked to the proposition that the role of these libraries is to move actions to create reading and writing opportunities for all groups of their user population. However, the great difference is the fact that the first have a strong theoretical basis in the literature for the development of their practices, which reflects in the multiple actions that concretize the sense of hybridity in these institutions. Therefore, it is believed that the application of the management of hybrid information in cultural equipments is essential for the promotion of access and service to the general needs of the target audience. It is through the hybridity of information, tools, services and processes that the communities are developed. Thus, the concept of hybrid libraries must be one of the potential activities of public libraries in the development of their communities. / FAPESP: 2015/09749-0

Strategies for the development of hybrid collections in academic libraries in Mozambique : a study of three academic librariesChiconela, Acuceno Joao, Chissano, Helena Amarilda January 2021 (has links)
Mozambique academic libraries are quite vulnerable in hybrid collection development for various reasons. In the process of collection development, physical collections have dominated the Mozambican libraries’ scene because they can acquire printed materials relatively easily. Digital materials, on the other hand, have caused difficulties due to the costs of subscribing to databases and poor technological infrastructure generated by insufficient resources. This work aims to understand the strategies followed by the libraries of Mozambican higher education institutions for the development of their hybrid collections, and to highlight the acquisition patterns, trends of integration of the collections and general challenges they face in this area. To answer the research questions, we have conducted the literature review and collected empirical data from university library documents and through semi-structured interviews with librarians responsible for collection development in three universities. The research adopted a qualitative study method and investigated three university libraries in Mozambique. As a result, we have identified collection development strategies used for the development of hybrid collections. These are partly overlapping as they must help to solve similar problems, and some strategies are specific to a university, because of different conditions and opportunities. It was also realized that, despite the efforts of those university libraries, there is a general weakness in state funding. The influence of external investment proved to be a great positive differential in the working areas of the affected libraries. It was also found out that university libraries participate and use the potential of the Mozambican library consortium AMOBAP unequally and the integration of institutional repositories is not on the same stage among the libraries.

The role of information technology as a critical agent of change in public library information services, in the environment of infornation society, is studied, considering the redefinition of libraries social functions and services. First of all, it's presents a terminological survey of modern libraries trends (digital library, electronic library, virtual library, hybrid library). Hybrid library is selected as a valid conceptual framework for this work: library services in digital context. Library automation and technologies concepts and applications are reviewed, focusing in library systems, which match into a classic model of library automation. Information retrieval and public information features (Opac) are studied in-depth, in order to compare it with recent development in the information market for libraries and significant digital ibraries projects. The strategic role of information technologies management is presented as a requirement for understanding the complex interrelation between services and technologies. It's also analysed the two technological context that have a greater potential of influence in library systems: In one hand the Groupware and Workflow, and in the aher hand internet virtual communities and portals. Also is described the different points of view about digital information systems architecture, introducing the concept of Net-Library, as an organizational view of libraries in interaction inside an infomation and social environment. A new conceptual framework of library systems is defined, with extended functionalities derived of social and technological changes about information services, denominated Extended Library System. It's structured in two leve ls: application and product. The first level describes the modules of an library management and infonnation system application. The second one is dedicated to fue public information project requirements of a library portal. Finally it presents structured indicators to evaluate extended automation, as well as elements to model hybrid libraries information technologies project

Previous issue date: 2006-12-20 / The purpose of this Master s Dissertation is to study virtual libraries from a historical and
descriptive standpoint, with emphasis on a recurrent conceptual setting within the context
of cyberculture, taken as a time category corresponding to the contemporary phase of
mediatic civilization. The empirical factors and aspects of the object of research have been
delimited since at least 1994. Based on a research methodology founded upon a review of
the literature, this work involves a study of traditional, real time and hybrid libraries. The
subject of this research, marked by theoretical and practical aspects, encompasses general
and specific implications concerning the emergence of virtual libraries, involving,
simultaneously, the hypotheses that the emergence of virtual libraries may not show a
correlation with traditional libraries and that the development of the former is due to the
development of the latter or even to a process motivated by the typicity of the post-modern
culture. The attainment of the objectives of this research presupposes an understanding of
the social, historical and cultural statute of libraries in general and of the
sociotechnological aspects of cyberculture and cyberspace; a study of the influence of postmodern
culture on the development or the obliteration, oblivion or pulverization of
traditional libraries; identification of the modus operandi of the process of acculturation in
cyberspace; and an understanding of the change in the esthetics of information in the
cybercultural environment. Similarly, this study aims to analyze the various models of
organization of information, focusing on its access, within the ambit of in loco, real time
and hybrid libraries, which, in this context, implies a critical survey of the technologies
destined for the development of bibliotheconomic services. Based on this demarcation of
theoretical and methodological principles, the development and consolidation of the
horizons of this Dissertation encompass, fundamentally, its entire belongingness to the area
das bibliotecas em geral e dos aspectos sociotecnológicos da cibercultura e do cyberspace;
