Enhancing Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) Visualization with Open Source Web-Based SoftwareDeparday, Vivien January 2010 (has links)
Recent advances in information technology such as Web mapping and location-aware mobile devices
have enabled non-experts to create, use and share volumes of spatial data in an increasingly
accessible fashion. Such user-generated spatial data is usually referred to as Volunteered Geographic
Information (VGI). Two of the fundamental challenges associated with the exploitation of VGI relate
to information overload and extraction of meaning. In order to deal with these challenges and
improve the utility of VGI, this thesis investigates the potential of several interactive geovisualization
techniques including filtering, dynamic spatial aggregation, linking and brushing, and tag-based
visualizations. As a preliminary work to explore and structure the new research field of VGI, a
framework of the different types of VGI is elaborated and followed by a review of the challenges and
current solutions related to the utilization of VGI. Based on this review, a web-based prototype is
developed to serve as a platform for the evaluation of selected geovisualization techniques. The
prototype is then used in a series of workshops with rich citizen-generated data related to place-based
community assets. The results of the case study show that the implemented geovisualization
techniques enable users to find relevant subsets of information and to gain new insights on the data.
Based on the potential shown by these results, future research directions are suggested.

The Contribution of Open Frameworks to Life Cycle AssessmentSayan, Bianca January 2011 (has links)
Environmental metrics play a significant role in behavioural change, policy formation, education, and industrial decision-making. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a powerful framework for providing information on environmental impacts, but LCA data is under-utilized, difficult to access, and difficult to understand. Some of the issues that are required to be resolved to increase relevancy and use of LCA are accessibility, validation, reporting and publication, and transparency.
This thesis proposes that many of these issues can be resolved through the application of open frameworks for LCA software and data. The open source software (OSS), open data, open access, and semantic web movements advocate the transparent development of software and data, inviting all interested parties to contribute.
A survey was presented to the LCA community to gauge the community’s interest and receptivity to working within open frameworks, as well as their existing concerns with LCA data. Responses indicated dissatisfaction with existing tools and some interest in open frameworks, though interest in contributing was weak. The responses also pointed out transparency, the expansion of LCA information, and feedback to be desirable areas for improvement.
Software for providing online LCA databases was developed according to open source, open data, and linked data principles and practices. The produced software incorporates features that attempt to resolve issues identified in previous literature in addition to needs defined from the survey responses. The developed software offers improvements over other databases in areas of transparency, data structure flexibility, and ability to facilitate user feedback.
The software was implemented as a proof of concept, as a test-bed for attracting data contributions from LCA practitioners, and as a tool for interested users. The implementation allows users to add LCA data, to search through LCA data, and to use data from the software in separate independent tools..
The research contributes to the LCA field by addressing barriers to improving LCA data and access, and providing a platform on which LCA database tools and data can develop efficiently, collectively, and iteratively.

Diffusion Of Free And Open Source Software As Innovation: A Case Study Of MetuOzaygen, Altay S. 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the diffusion of free and open source software (FOSS) on desktop PCs at Middle East Technical University in Ankara (METU) is investigated within the framework of the diffusion of innovation theory. This thesis aims to propose some policies for the migration to FOSS on desktop PCs at METU. The research is conducted through two similar web-based surveys. The first survey was held during 27-28 September 2003 after the examination of exemption for the IS100 course. The second survey was held between 23 March and 24 May 2004 in the whole of the METU campus. This survey was open to all students and academic and non-academic staff with a METU network account. There were 402 participants in the first survey and 1224 in the second. As expected, Microsoft OS rules the desktop PCs within the METU campus. According to the surveys, there is a rather large PC user base which could potentially migrate to GNU/Linux system. In addition to a large amount of data, it has been found out that a migration to FOSS is welcomed greatly by the users if the process is explained on the basis of public economic gains. However personal migration is still difficult if the user is left alone to install any new OS. Activities which will eventually increase the awareness for FOSS at METU, change in the curriculum of the IS100 course, collaboration among METU FOSS users and creation of a software catalog with possible FOSS equivalent for METU courses are some of the propositions which will eventually help the migration process. Furthermore, different innovation-decision models are discussed based on the research findings.

Awlp: Building A Custom Wireless Access Point Using Open Source SoftwareCakircali, Alptekin 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Almost all commercially available wireless access devices are special embedded systems with proprietary software that do not allow any modifications. Modifications to these systems are only possible by firmware upgrades released by manufacturers. However, release times of these firmware upgrades are unpredictable, and they are usually for bug-fix purposes rather than being feature and capability improvements. Thus, these devices fail to provide the needed flexibility. Ability to provide timely custom solution that is well integrated into existing network infrastructure is the key factor for a successful wireless access service implementation. In this thesis work, the open source software called AWLP is designed, coded, tested,
and released to public as a viable alternative for creating custom wireless access device.

Free And Open Source Software In TurkeyGozukeles, Ibrahim Izlem 01 June 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years, there has been growing interest of governments and firms for Free
and Open Source Software (FOSS). However, FOSS is still a puzzlement for a wide
spectrum of academic disciplines. Social scientists ask why FOSS hackers participate
in FOSS if they do not get any monetary rewards. On the other hand firms ask,
how a firm can earn money from FOSS. In this study, motivations of FOSS hackers
and firms are taken as an interrelated phenomenon. For FOSS hackers, social and
technical aspects of FOSS are essential. On the contrary to FOSS hackers, firms have
profit oriented goals. In this context, conflicting and coinciding interests of FOSS
hackers and firms are investigated through development of FOSS in Turkey. Software
industry in Turkey is not developed enough and FOSS may play a prominent
role in developing its own software industry. This study discusses FOSS both from
the view of hackers and the firms in Turkey. In that respect, social conditions that
make hackers voluntarily contribute, discrepancies between attitudes and behaviors
of the firms and FOSS licenses are explored. According to these facts, possible FOSS
business strategies which may be adopted in Turkey are presented.

Stigmergic collaboration: a theoretical framework for mass collaborationElliott, Mark Alan Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents an application-oriented theoretical framework for generalised and specific collaborative contexts with a special focus on Internet-based mass collaboration. The proposed framework is informed by the author’s many years of collaborative arts practice and the design, building and moderation of a number of online collaborative environments across a wide range of contexts and applications. The thesis provides transdisciplinary architecture for describing the underlying mechanisms that have enabled the emergence of mass collaboration and other activities associated with ‘Web 2.0’ by incorporating a collaboratively developed definition and general framework for collaboration and collective activity, as well as theories of swarm intelligence, stigmergy, and distributed cognition.
