Aplicação das técnicas de dosimetria termoluminescente (TL) e luminescência opticamente estimulada (OSL) na determinação de curvas de isodose em uma simulação de tratamento de câncer pela técnica de radioterapia em arco modulado volumétrico - VMAT / Application of the thermoluminescent (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry techniques to determinate the isodose curves in a cancer treatment planning simulation using volumetric modulated arc therapy - VMAT

Amanda Bravim 11 June 2015 (has links)
The Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is an advance technique of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This progress is due to the continuous gantry rotation with the radiation beam modulation providing lower time of the patient treatment. This research aimed the verification of the isodose curves in a simulation of a vertebra treatment with spinal cord protection using the thermoluminescent (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry techniques and theLiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100), CaSO4:Dy and Al2O3:C dosimeters and LiF:Mg,Ti microdosimeters (TLD-100). The dosimeters were characterized using PMMA plates of 30x30x30 cm3 and different thickness. All irradiations were done using Truebeam STx linear accelerator of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, with 6 MV photons beam. After the dosimeter characterization, they were irradiated according the specific planning simulation and using a PMMA phantom developed to VMAT measurements. This irradiation aimed to verify the isodose curves of the treatment simulation using the two dosimetry techniques. All types of dosimeters showed satisfactory results to determine the dose distribution but analysing the complexity of the isodose curves and the proximity of them, the LiF:Mg,Ti microdosimeter showed the most appropriate for use due to its small dimensions. Regarding the best technique, as both technique showed satisfactory results, the TL technique presents less complex to be used because the most of the radiotherapy departments already have a TL laboratory. The OSL technique requires more care and greater investment in the hospital.

Estudo do comportamento de sinais OSL de BeO e Al2O3:C usando o Modelo OTOR Simplificado e Método dos Mínimos Quadrados / Study of the Behavior of OSL Signals of BeO and Al2O3:C using the Simplified OTOR Model and Least Square Method

The dosimetry of alpha, beta and gamma radiation is important in various applied areas, it is used in radiation protection of patients and professionals who are exposed at this kind of radiation. With dosimetric studies, it is possible to better estimate the absorbed dose, and population risks. Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) techniques are used for these dosimetric applications. Recent studies have shown that some known dosimetric materials as carbon doped aluminum oxide (Al$_2$O$_3$:C) and berilium oxide (BeO) undergo changes in OSL signal behavior related to dose rates and types of radiation. The main objective of this work was to analise the formats of these curves and quantitatively verify whether or not there are changes in OSL signal of the dosimeters irradiated with different types of radiation and dose rates. Under the model of one trap one recombination center (OTOR) the continuous wave OSL (CW-OSL) signals were studied. The OTOR model is the simplest model, but has no analytical solution and the computational solutions are costly by the large number of variables and parameters. In this work, it was necessary to make some simplifications in order to obtain a simple model that could be fitted to the data. The simple-OTOR model shows an exponential decay behavior in the CW-OSL signal description. Another extension approach to the simple-OTOR model was the model with two independent traps and one recombination center, that results in two exponential decays. To obtain the parameters that describe the CW-OSL signal with these models, the least square method (LSM) was used, with parameter refinement by Gauss method. For both the materials the two exponential decay model proved to be superior in quality to the one exponential decay by the analysis of the parameter $\\chi^2$ and the behavior of the residuals. With the fittings, it was possible to verify differences in the behavior of the CW-OSL signal of the samples irradiated in different situations. These differences observed are presented in the decay or initial signal parameters, or in their ratios. Fitted parameters show that OSL signals from Al$_2$O$_3$:C and BeO irradiated with alpha, beta and gamma exhibit significant differences in behavior. The differences verified by the fittings of the CW-OSL signals presented by beta and gamma irradiated dosimeters may in part have been caused by fading effect, which affects in a different way the shapes of the curves and fitted parameters. Gamma irradiation with dose and absorbed dose rate ranges from 22 to 122 mGy and from 0.024 to 1.66Gy/s respectively did not produce significant differences in OSL signals.

New insights into old problems : the application of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of early Egyptian ceramic chronology, with a focus on luminescence dating

Hood, Amber Giles Eve January 2016 (has links)
This thesis takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of ancient Egyptian ceramics by applying scientific dating techniques alongside more traditional methods. It is the first study to apply OSL dating to an Egyptian ceramic assemblage, and it has done so by developing the minimum extraction technique (MET), which has made it possible to use OSL to sample, and thus analyse, ceramics housed in museums. The MET is at present essential to the success of OSL dating of Egyptian ceramics, as the exportation ban on antiquities has prevented OSL analysis of field material. For this thesis, using this new sampling technique, OSL has been applied to several assemblages from the Predynastic to the Early Dynastic period. Ceramics from [ADD IN REVIEW ] have been examined, with three phases being established: late Naqada III, First Intermediate Period, and the mediaeval Islamic period. Absolute dates have been determined for each phase and, where comparison is possible, have been found in good agreement with the historical chronology. A set of vessels from Naqada, Ballas, and the Tomb of Djer at Abydos have been examined using OSL in conjunction with radiocarbon dating. Again, three phases of activity were discerned: late Naqada II, early Naqada III, and the first scientifically determined dates for a burning event in the Tomb of Djer (the New Kingdom). The thesis also demonstrates how OSL can be used as a relative dating technique by analysing a collection of Wavy-Handled ceramics and wine jars from Turah, finding that the OSL results agree well with the established relative chronology. Finally, this thesis has also examined the applicability of cladistic analysis to the study of Egyptian ceramics. Cladistics is a technique borrowed from the biological sciences which offers a complimentary way to examine the evolution of ceramic types and forms, in particular the development of beer and wine jars.

Fundamental and sedimentological controls on luminescence behaviour in quartz and feldspar

King, Georgina January 2012 (has links)
The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics of a suite of quartz and feldspar samples from a range of modern glaciofluvial sediments have been explored to determine the use of OSL as a depositional pathway tracer. Paraglacial and subglacial source material and various glaciofluvial deposits have been analysed from the glacial catchments of Bergsetbreen, Fåbergstølsbreen, and Nigardsbreen as well as the Fåbergstølsgrandane sandur, Jostedalen, Norway. The OSL distribution signatures have been characterised through exploration of sample skewness, kurtosis and overdispersion, and dose distributions of the different depositional settings and source materials are distinct for both quartz and feldspar. Residual ages are greatest for feldspar, indicating significant potential age overestimation where feldspar is used to date glaciofluvial deposits. Sample dose distributions and overdispersion characteristics are driven by source sediment properties, whereas residual ages are controlled by transport and depositional processes. Those transport and depositional processes which result in significant light exposure, also influence dose distributions, and processes that sort sediments least effectively have the highest residual doses. Sample OSL characteristics, transport distance and grain size distributions have been investigated using factor analysis, as a means of predicting sediment source, facies, depositional process and deposit type. Although the depositional processes of the quartz samples can be clearly differentiated based upon OSL characteristics, factor analyses of feldspar and grain size characteristics are inconclusive. The application of quartz OSL to the Norwegian samples was limited by its very poor luminescence sensitivity. Quartz is the preferred mineral for OSL, however, despite the plethora of successful quartz OSL applications, the precise origin of the UV/blue luminescence emission, measured during OSL, remains unclear. The origins of this emission and controls on its intensity were explored using a variety of spectroscopic techniques including photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence, radioluminescence (RL), ionoluminescence (IL) and x-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL). Exciting sample luminescence at a range of energies enables exploration of the different donor centres responsible for the luminescence emission. Cathodoluminescence and RL emission spectra are similar, comprising broad emissions at 1.5, 2.0 and 2.7 eV (detection in the UV part of the spectrum was not possible for these experiments). Ionoluminescence emission spectra were dominated by the ~ 3.3 eV emission, which is a component of the signal conventionally monitored during OSL. This emission depleted as a function of dose, to the benefit of the red emission (1.8-2.0 eV) for all samples throughout IL, and similar observations were made for the 3.4 eV emission observed from the XEOL emission spectra. The XEOL spectra are dominated by an emission at ~ 3.8 eV, not widely reported for quartz, which has tentatively been attributed to peroxy linkages. Differences between the IL and XEOL emission spectra are interpreted as evidence for the presence of multiple excited states.

Determining Hillslope Diffusion Rates in a Boreal Forest: Quaternary Fluvial Terraces in the Nenana River Valley, Central Alaska Range

Walker, Laurel Anne 01 January 2014 (has links)
The subarctic boreal forest biome is predicted to experience higher magnitudes of warming than other biomes due to climate change. The effects of this warming will be pronounced in areas underlain by discontinuous permafrost where melting permafrost and distinct changes in vegetation patterns are expected. To better understand rates of hillslope diffusion in the boreal forest I have used a geomorphic process modeling approach, using data from a sequence of Quaternary fluvial terraces located in the Nenana River valley of central Alaska. I hypothesized that diffusion rates here would be slower when compared to the mid-latitudes, and faster on north versus south-facing slopes. Calculated diffusion rates do support the hypothesis as they fall on the lower end of the global spectrum of documented hillslope diffusion rates. However, a significant difference in diffusion rates is not seen between the predominantly northeast and southwest facing slopes used in this study.

This research of doctor’s grade analyze the depositional and sculptural events, at stream Entupido basin, Passa Quatro Alkalin Complex, Estate of São Paulo, from the study of recent deposits.Beyond the geomorphologycal analysis at referred spacial unit, this research tried to establish the absolute age of some sedimentary units that structure the relief and the mechanism involved in its genesis. / The present research aimed to evaluate the dynamics of the morphogenetic processes of the cuesta relief in the Late Quaternary (Upper Pleistocene-Upper Holocene) and in the current anthropic periods. Based on this evaluation, the denudative sequence was reconstituted in a geological time scale, and the implications of the anthropogenic morphology constitution in the evolution of this compartment in a historical time scale were verified as well. In order to achieve this objective, depositional dating were performed through Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and the Pb-210 method (210Pb). In addition, specific morphostructural, geomorphological and land-use/land-cover mapping were performed. The Cavalheiro Stream basin – Analândia (SP) – was chosen as the study area due to its natural distribution, in the transition of the sandstone-basaltic Cuestas and the Paulista Peripheral Depression and the essentially rural land-use evolution as well. The systemic analysis comparing the colluvium material ages (OSL) with the regional paleoclimatic fluctuations and the morphostructural/anthropogenic features arrangement provided an evolutionary model of the cuestas relief, characterized by the following denudative sequence: 1) First dry phase from 30,770 ± 4,930 to 8,000 ± 1,000 years BP (transition between the Upper Pleistocene and the Lower Holocene, extended until the beginning of the Middle Holocene); 2) First wet phase from 7,420 ± 980 to 4,500 ± 750 years BP (Middle-Upper Holocene); 3) Second dry phase from 3,940 ± 665 to 2,215 ± 250 years BP (Upper Holocene); and 4) Anthropogenic phase, from 1962 to 2013 (historical series of 51 years). Fluvial sediments dating through the 210Pb method was inefficient as a complementary resource to detail the anthropogenic phase in the cuestas due to the predominance of sedimentary covers in the lithopedologic composition of this compartment. However, the quantification of the morphological changes in relation with the systematization of the geoindicators corroborates the anthropogenic action on the cuestas relief formation. The cuestas paleomorphogenetic reconstitution demonstrated that the denudative processes in the Late Quaternary (Upper Pleistocene-Upper Holocene) and in the recent anthropic period display a complex configuration, with a cyclic and polygenic dynamics. / FAPESP: 2012/20513-0

Lichtwellenleiterbasierte Dosisleistungsmessung mittels Radiolumineszenz und Optisch Stimulierter Lumineszenz

Teichmann, Tobias 27 March 2018 (has links) (PDF)
In medicine and technology there is a demand for flexible, miniaturized dose rate measurement systems with high spatial resolution for the application in radiation fields of high dose rates and dose rate gradients. Fiber optic coupled dosimeters can meet these requirements. They consist of a radiation sensitive luminescent material which is connected to a light detector with a flexible light guide. The elimination of the dominant perturbation, which is the stem effect generated by irradiation of the light guide, is one inherent challenge of all fiber optic dosimeters. In the present work such a system is realized, using the luminescence of the two tissue equivalent detector materials beryllium oxide and lithium tetraborate. The main focus is on the investigation of methods of stem elimination, exploiting the temporal characteristics of the luminescent materials, as well as the time structure of the irradiation or a modulated optical stimulation. For this purpose, capable FPGA-based read out electronics are employed, which enable real time measurements with 10 ns sampling. Different methods of analysis process the time stamp raw data and generate a stem-free, dose rate proportional detector response.
