Espaço doméstico, devoção e arte:  a construção histórica do acervo de oratórios brasileiro, séculos XVIII e XIX / Domestic space, devotion and art: the historical making of the heritage of the Brazilian oratories, 18th and 19th Centuries

Silveli Maria de Toledo Russo 18 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis studies the artistic production of the domestic oratories made in Brazil, especially in the 18th and 19yh centuries that have been kept now in public or private Brazilian museums. The thesis also tries to understand the dynamics of its course within the domestic context having São Paulo, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as illustrative scenery. Concerning this approach, it is of utmost importance to observe such religious artifacts in their two distinct functional universes, respectively those of a devotional feature, when they are commonly intended to the act of praying, and those of a liturgical aspect when they were specially prepared for directing the official celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, based upon information provided by a set of pertinent evidence, textual sources and before the collection of oratories that were chosen to be used for the analysis, a very close understanding of the artistic work performed towards this production, as well as the ways of organizing the spaces in a home within the context of the religious experiences of Catholicism, confirming the hypothesis that such artifacts were seen as the protagonists of the complex human and material relations that were establish there.

This dissertation analyzes the oratory of students of the first semester of the Bachelor of Arts, at Universidade Federal de Pelotas, based on the questioning: which positions of subject are taken in class in a moment of evaluation in which the youths are summoned to speak?, and based on those positions taken, how are the pupils subjectivized and build certain identity speeches for themselves? Besides that, this study aims to analyze such oratory, in a sense of understanding them as a pedagogical activity which allows the occupation of certain subject positions – the process of identity constitution – and understand the classroom as a privileged place where complex speeches circulate, and, therefore, they constitute social subjects. For analysis purposes, the theoretical framework is supported by the Cultural Studies (CS) and by the Transdisciplinary Applied Linguistics (TAL), specifically regarding identity issues. From the perspective of Cultural Studies, it is possible to analyze the representations and identity based on the speeches, since language is understood as a constructor of identity. The Transdisciplinary Applied Linguistics, in turn, meets the identity issues, as regards the social subject to be built by the senses produced from the uses and social, political and economic implications. The main theoretical assumptions, which understand the language as constitutor of meanings, were based on authors such as Fabrício (2006), Hall (1997a), Moita-Lopes (2001, 2006a), among others. Regarding discussions that involve the questions of identity and representation, authors like Hall (1997b, 2000, 2011), Silva (1995b, 2000a, 2000b), Woodward (2000), among others were used. Therefore, as a principle, the fact that the language serves as a mechanism which plays a key role in the construction and movement of meaning, this research aims to understand the classroom as a place in which there is, besides the process teaching/learning, the production of identity. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the students are subjectivized and build identities, occupying positions of subject in the classroom. The positions, for example, a subject concerned with issues that include respect, dignity and equality, as well as a critical subject, politically aware and knowledgeable were filled not only at the time of speaking, but also in the discussion after each presentation, in which students were positioned and constituted while social subjects that were meaningful to themselves and to the world.

Diplomacy Rhetoric and the Human Rights Appeals of Jeane J. Kirkpatrick and Vernon A. Walters

Rogina, Sergio A. (Sergio Armando) 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis investigates the extent to which Ambassador Kirkpatrick's and Ambassador Walters' United Nations discourses on human rights reflects the rhetorical themes of "prophetic dualism" and "technocratic realism." A metaphoric analysis of six speeches reveals that both Kirkpatrick's and Walters' arguments were framed through an ideological division between Democracy and Communism. The presence of "prophetic dualism" in Kirkpatrick's and Walters' discourses is explained as an extension of President Reagan's bipolar rhetoric on world affairs. The presence of "technocratic realism" in Walters' discourse is described as resulting from a unique set of political and rhetorical factors. The exacting nature of "prophetic dualism" may make it ill suited as a method of argument in the realm of diplomacy.

Analýza řečnického profilu Davida Ratha prezentovaného českými audiovizuálními médii / Analysis of the speech profile of David Rath presented by Czech audiovisual media

Švejkovský, Jakub January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze the rhetorical profile of one of the most prominent Czech rhetors after the Velvet revolution, physician and politician David Rath. In the theoretical part, the author comprehensively processes the history of public speaking based on the ancient but still current rhetorical tradition of ancient Greece and Rome. Furthermore, the work describes all the specifics defining both the interpersonal communication itself, as well as its individual aspects - specifically, verbal, nonverbal and psychological components, along with persuasive and manipulative techniques. The practical part is co-created by two key aspects - the career and political profile of David Rath and the analysis of his speech. The theoretical basis in combination with the knowledge of the life story of the central speaker forms the basis and context for the analysis of Rath's rhetoric. On carefully selected speeches, the author then examines in detail how the observed rhetor can adapt to various situations across the communication spectrum. The researched findings can then be used for further analyses of a similar focus.

A consideration of the qualities which contribute to the effectiveness of the speeches of Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Givan, Joanna 01 January 1944 (has links)
This study proposes to analyze the qualities of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's speeches as determined through a general survey of his speeches and a particular study of those of 1941. As President Roosevelt is considered an effective speaker of the day, a consideration of those qualities of composition, delivery and audience reaction which have contributed to the effectiveness of his speeches should have value. The year 1941 was selected because it was decisive year in the destiny of our country and as such affected his speeches.

Sociálně pedagogická práce v salesiánských střediscích mládeže / Social pedagogical work at Salesian Youth Centres

Opatrná, Kateřina January 2011 (has links)
Annotation: The presented work deals with the contemporary Salesian education on the background of pedagogical principles of the preventive system of Don Bosco, which was formulated as a response to concrete historical conditions of life and needs of young boys in Turine in the second half of the 19th century and was based on a personal experience of a young priest and tutor John Bosco. The goal of the work is to ascertain through an analysis of the contemporary Salesisan education and concrete activities of Czech Salesian Youth Centres, whether and in what extant the Salesian activities can be considered as a social pedagogical work. The work is divided into five parts. Part One is focused on the historical context of the origin of the Salesian movement, whereas Part Two on the preventive system, as was applied by Don Bosco in his work. Part three is dedicated to the contemporary Salesian education and Part Four describes the functions, methods and forms of work in Czech Salesian Youth Centres. In Part Five I examine through the analysis of the contemporary Salesian education and activities of selected Czech Salesian Youth Centres, whether and in which extant the Salesian activities reflect and fulfil social pedagogical aspects of youth work. Key words: Social pedagogical work; Bosco Giovanni; Salesians of...

Influence of the Presidential Inaugural Address on Audience Perceptions of Candidate Image and the State of the Nation

Rush, Kyle Alexander 11 September 2017 (has links)
This study asks whether and how the presidential inaugural address influences American audiences. The current study explores how the 2017 Presidential Inaugural Address of Donald Trump influences audiences. Two areas were studied: Candidate image and the state of the nation. I hypothesized that participants who watched the address would have different attitudes regarding candidate image and the state of the nation compared to non-viewers. I also hypothesized that viewers of the address who voted for Donald Trump would respond differently to candidate image and the state of the nation when compared with those who did not vote for Trump. With one exception, none of the findings was significant. That is, attitudes of inaugural address viewers and non-viewers were similar, and attitudes of those who voted for the president and those who did not vote for the president were also similar. The exception was noted between those who voted for the candidate and oppositional voters: Those who voted for Donald Trump reported the nation is headed "in the right direction" while dissenters disagreed.

Integrative complexity in South African Parliamentary debate : the normative basis for variability.

Soderlund, John G. January 1999 (has links)
All 1996 parliamentary speeches of two members from each of three parties represented in the South African parliament were coded for the extent to which they demonstrated integrative complexity, a measure of the level of differentiation and integration which a decision-maker demonstrates in justifying his or her position. Each of the selected debates was also categorised according to the manner in which the speaker was aligned in relation to other parties taking part in the debate and the extent to which the matter had been aired in parliament previously. The relationship between the level of integrative complexity shown in the speeches was assessed in relation to the alignment of the speaker with other parties, the extent to which the debate had been rehearsed and the position f the speaker on the left-right political spectrum. The results of the study indicated a strong relationship between the relationship of the speaker to the ruling ANC in the debate, with speakers showing significantly lower integrative complexity when opposing the ANC than when they were in agreement with the ANC. The extent to which the debate had been rehearsed bore a relationship to integrative complexity which only approached significance and the political affiliation of the speaker yielded a non-significant relationship to integrative complexity. The results of the study are discussed with reference to existing theoretical understandings of and research into integrative complexity. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.
