E-technology and the emergent e-environment: Implications for organizational form and function

Tassabehji, Rana, Wallace, James, Cornelius, Nelarine January 2007 (has links)
No / The advent of the Internet and e-commerce in the mid-to-late 20th century, has been instrumental in changing the landscape of the business environment. This has led to new management approaches and practices, mediated by advances in technology that are revolutionizing the workplace and continue to impact organizational structures and strategies. In this paper, we develop a taxonomy for IT and organizational theory from which we identify a pressing need for a conceptualisation of this rapid development in technology and its impact on organizational form. We introduce the concept of the e-environment to define the new and problem domain in which organizations are now operating as a consequence, particularly, of new technologies and the Internet. We explain how as the complexity of the technology increases, the ability to manage and appropriately exploit this e-environment under a traditional organizational form becomes more difficult. Currently, organizations are in the process of re-structuring to address this issue and facilitate continued strategic technological take-up to remain competitive. We posit the need for developing suitable organizational forms comprising both functional and technological specialists. We argue that the resulting forms are best explained by an extended model that can be seen as a composite of the existing forms. Finally, we present an executive reporting structure that will provide long-term top-level support for organizational decision making to manage the dynamic domain that is the e-environment. Deconstructing Complexity: Configurations of Institutional Complexity and Structural Hybridity

Raynard, Mia January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This article unpacks the notion of institutional complexity and highlights the distinct sets of challenges confronting hybrid structural arrangements. The framework identifies three factors that contribute to the experience of complexity - namely, the extent to which the prescriptive demands of logics are incompatible, whether there is a settled or widely accepted prioritization of logics within the field, and the degree to which the jurisdictions of the logics overlap. The central thesis is that these "components" of complexity variously combine to produce four distinct institutional landscapes, each with differing implications for the challenges organizations face and for how they might respond. The article explores the situational relevance of an array of hybridizing responses and discusses their implications for organizational legitimacy and performance. It concludes by specifying the boundary conditions of the framework and highlighting fruitful directions for future scholarship.

Efficient Organization of Collective Data-Processing

Cukrowski, Jacek, Fischer, Manfred M. 11 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The paper examines the application of the concept of economic efficiency to organizational issues of collective information processing in decision making. Information processing is modeled in the framework of the dynamic parallel-processing model of associative computation with an endogenous set-up cost of the processors. The model is extended to include the specific features of collective information processing in the team of decision makers which could cause an error in data analysis. In such a model, the conditions for efficient organization of information processing are defined and the architecture of the efficient structures is considered. We show that specific features of collective decision making procedures require a broader framework for judging organizational efficiency than has traditionally been adopted. In particular, and contrary to the results presented in economic literature, we show that in human data processing (unlike in computer systems), there is no unique architecture for efficient information processing structures, but a number of various efficient forms can be observed. The results indicate that technological progress resulting in faster data processing (ceteris paribus) will lead to more regular information processing structures. However, if the relative cost of the delay in data analysis increases significantly, less regular structures could be efficient. No. of bitstreams: 1 2016 - Vanessa Faria Silva.pdf: 2965070 bytes, checksum: 0a53eb4e828e839fea364ac45122dc0a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-29 / CAPES / The financing of cultural projects for a long time, was characterized by reliance on public announcements and private companies. In this scenario, a limited number of projects received financial support, due to factors such as scarcity of resources and lack of appreciation of the cultural sector. However, from technological innovations and enhancement of the Creative Economy, occurred in recent years, changes in the funding dynamics of projects in this area, through crowdfunding platforms. Thus, the creative economy projects now have, in addition to traditional sources of financing, the online crowdfunding platforms as an alternative to request funding. Considering the important role that these platforms are playing in the dynamics of the Creative Economy project financing, and function-dependent manner to advances in Information and Communication Technologies, the present study aimed to analyze the organizational form of crowdfunding platforms available for financing Creative Economy projects in Brazil. For this qualitative research was conducted through the document content analysis and semi-open interviews and other data collected on the Internet. Finally, after analysis of the collected data, it was possible to consider that initially the platforms have a horizontal organizational form, and as they grow adopt vertical organizational models.

Neumann, Detlef, Meyer, Jelka 29 July 2016 (has links) (PDF)

Olsson, Dan January 2020 (has links)
The thesis illustrates the emergence and development of the types of symbolic capital, networks and fields used by the rulers of Easter Island in their exercise of power, and what possible consequences they may have for their habitus. There is no concrete conclusion, but it is possible to see reasonable course of events, where the archaeological finds form the milestones, and it is possible to trace the formation and expansion of a field, created from material assets, inventions, social thoughts and actions. There are signs of variation, or different phases, in the field, over time. The rulers seem to have tried to control the field by, for example, building monuments, such as ahu and statues, or in other words, the authorities of Easter Island managed to create different types of assets. In addition, various organizational forms, sacred places and buildings, taboos and traditions have been used in the form of ceremonies, rituals and sacrifices of various kinds. This symbolic capital has been used by the rulers to steer residents' work and striving in the desired direction, and to create a habitus that everyone feels involved in. This habitus has probably changed when new businesses entered the market.
