Dualistic model of passion and mental health in a sample of Canadian student-athletes

Dukic, Jelena 04 January 2012 (has links)
The incidence of mental health problems in student-athletes has garnered an increased interest and concern among researchers and university administrators; however, limited literature is available on Canadian student-athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore whether role conflict and passion were predictive of mental health constructs, (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress, and satisfaction with life) in a sample of Canadian student-athletes. The final sample consisted of 148 participants (105 females and 43 males) from five universities belonging to the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. Participants completed an online survey comprised of DASS (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale), SWLS (Satisfaction with Life), DMP (Dualistic Model of Passion Scale) and sets of questions about personal characteristics and self-perceived conflict between their academic and athletic roles. Conflict was reported by 70% of males and 55% of females. In addition, 99.32% of surveyed student-athletes were passionate about sport, while 73.65% were passionate about school. Passion for sport and conflict were found to be correlated with mental health variables and statistically significant predictors of depression, anxiety and stress explaining 16%, 14.8% and 21.8% of variance in scores, while passion for school and conflict were significant predictors of satisfaction with life explaining 16.5% of score variance (p<0.05). Finally, males reported higher rate of “severe” depression (17% vs. 10%), anxiety (24% vs. 13%), and stress (17% vs. 15%) than females. These findings reveal relationships between investigated mental health constructs and passion and role conflict in student-athletes while adding to the limited research in a Canadian setting. / Graduate

The General Will and the Problem of Self-Love: An Analysis of Rousseau's Theory of Citizenship

Linz, Jeffrey David 01 December 2011 (has links)
This dissertation offers an interpretation of Rousseau's theory of the general will informed by his treatment of the problem of self-love. The central claim of the dissertation is that standard accounts of the general will have neglected both the role and the problematic character of Rousseau's conception of self-love and its relationship to his theory of the general will. When Rousseau's notion of self-love is understood properly, his theory of the general will is best conceived of as an active phenomenon consisting of an exercise of the self-love of the citizens of a well-formulated republic. In the first four chapters of the dissertation, three prominent readings of the general will are problematized by comparing them to a variety of claims in Rousseau's writings. It is then demonstrated that each interpretation neglects a rich analysis of the problem of self-love, which is central to Rousseau's description of the problem of inequality, the very problem that his theory of the general will sets out to solve. The three interpretations of the general will that are analyzed and critiqued are: (1) a straightforward reading in which any bundle of individual interests are given primacy in the interpretation of the general will and the morality of the law is interpreted as secondary; (2) an ideal reading in which the transcendent idea of justice is given primacy and individual interests are constrained in relation to it; (3) a Neokantian reading in which moral autonomy is emphasized and individual interests are constrained by a rationalistic conception of freedom. Besides pointing out certain textual infelicities involved in these readings, it is shown that they fail to adequately address Rousseau's claim that the general will represents a particular configuration of interest, which he calls the common interest. It is demonstrated that his enigmatic claim requires an analysis of his theory of self-love since for Rousseau interest is ultimately motivated by the more fundamental passion of self-love. In the final chapter, an interpretation of the general will is developed that understands it as an active form of sovereignty best understood as an ongoing phenomenon in which the self-love of the citizen is exercised and civic-virtue maintained. The dissertation concludes with the suggestion that Rousseau has not solved the problem of self-love because his theory of the general will presupposes the cultivation of patriotism in each citizen, a phenomenon most effective when it inflames self-love in relation to foreigners. This antagonism to other citizens and other nations perpetuates a state of war on the international level and inflames the passions that can lead to the types of inequality Rousseau was so careful to describe.

Varför arbetar tjänstepersonal övertid? : En kvantitativ studie på tjänstepersonal som inte erhåller extra övertidsersättning i rekryterings- och bemanningsbranschen / Why do officials work overtime? : A quantitative study of officials without overtime compensation in the staffing and recruitment industry

Brinkhagen, Alice, Strömberg, Julia January 2018 (has links)
Ingen skillnad observerades i övriga prediktorer. / The study aimed to investigate reasons to work overtime among employees without overtime compensation in the staffing and recruitment industry depending on work demands, the place of work in one’s life, internal and external working motivation and harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The study was conducted as a digital survey sent to 16 companies. QPS Nordic measured work demands, the place of work in one’s life and internal and external working motivation. PTWS measured harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The present study showed that work demands predicted overtime hours. No difference was observed in the other predictors. The conclusion of the study was that work demands made employees in the staffing and recruitment industry work overtime hours and that employers should pay attention to this regarding the health implications resulting from working overtime.

The species Passiflora setacea DC known as fruit-of-sleep is native to the cerrado may occur in the caatinga and in areas of transition such as semi-arid and norte-mineiro and has significant potential as rootstock for commercial species of passion fruit. Thus the present study was to evaluate conditions of light, temperature and plant growth regulators in seed germination of P. Setacea. The study was conducted in two stages. The first focuses on various concentrations of different regulators on condition of light and dark. The experimental design was completely randomized with 66 treatments, 5 replicates of 25 seeds per plot in a factorial 3x11x2 (regulators X concentrations X light and dark). The regulators employed were: the gibberellic acid GA3; GA4+7+N-(phenylmethyl) - aminopurina and GA3 plus GA4+7+ N-(phenylmethyl) - aminopurina in the following concentrations: 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 mg L-1 in the presence and absence of light. In the second step, it was evaluated different temperatures, with different regulators, under conditions of light and dark. The experimental design was completely randomized to 56 treatments, 5 replicates of 25 seeds per plot in a factorial 7x4x2 (temperature X regulators X light and dark). The temperatures used were: 20°C, 25°C, 30°C, 35°C, 40°C, 30/20°C and 20/30°C (16 / 8 hours respectively). The regulators used were: 100 mgL-1 GA3, 100 mgL-1 of GA4+7+ N-(phenylmethyl) - aminopurina, the mixture of 100 mgL-1 GA3 + 100 mgL-1 of GA4+7+ N - (phenylmethyl) - aminopurina and distilled water. We calculated the following variables: percentage of germination, rate of synchronization and speed of germination index. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and averages compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. It is concluded that the interaction of GA3 and / or GA4+7+ N-(phenylmethyl) - aminopurina is effective... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
