Portrait of a southern Progressive: The political life and times of Governor Pat M. Neff of Texas, 1871-1952

Stanley, Mark 05 1900 (has links)
Pat M. Neff was a product of his political place and time. Born in Texas in 1871, during Reconstruction, he matured and prospered while his native state did the same as it transitioned from Old South to New South. Neff spent most of his life in Waco, a town that combined New South Progressivism with religious conservatism. This duality was reflected in Neff's own personality. On moral or religious issues, he was conservative. On economic and social issues, he was Progressive. He thus was a typical Southern Progressive who de-emphasized social and political change in favor of economic development. For instance, as governor from 1921 to 1925, his work to develop and conserve Texas' water resources brought urbanization and industrialization that made the New South a reality in the state. Neff was a devout Baptist which influenced his politics and philosophy. He was president of Baylor University, a Baptist institution, for fifteen years after leaving the governor s office and he led the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in the 1940s. He combined Progressive and Christian values as he argued for the establishment of the United Nations and advocated forgiveness and brotherhood after World War II. The war's end marked the beginning of the American civil rights movement. Many within the SBC advocated an end to racism and discrimination, others did not. Neff's unwillingness to challenge racial traditions was typical of southern Progressives. The convergence of national politics and southern evangelical religion is evident in the final chapter of Neff's career. His selection of President Harry S. Truman as the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Baylor offended many religious conservatives. Neff overcame the opposition but it damaged his reputation and ultimately forced his resignation, ending his public career. By the time of his death in 1952, Texas had become everything the New South was supposed to be-urbanized and industrialized. Neff's activities were crucial to making that happen.

A grounded theory for active video game design to promote gamer engagement and immersion

Braaf, Adele January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Information Technology)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / Active Video Games (AVGs) are a form of video games that rely on gamer motion as the main source of interaction between the AVG and the player. These AVGs serve a number of purposes, such as medical rehabilitation, education, social development, and motor skill development, among others. Prolonged play of AVGs is not sustainable as gamers lose interest in playing AVGs after the initial period of acquiring them. Therefore, the following research question was posed: “What design factors contribute to an engaged and immersed AVG experience?” The aim was to explore the inhibiting and enhancing factors influencing engagement and immersion among AVG gamers, as well as to develop a theory of AVG design. Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT) was used as the methodology to carry out this study, which adopted an inductive approach towards the research to construct a theory firmly grounded in the data. Play Active Theory (PAT) is the outcome of this process, which explores the engagement and immersion factors related to AVG design as well as the abandonment and replayability of AVGs. PAT was compared to existing engagement and motivation theories as part of the CGT process, and further refined. In closing, the research question was answered and the aims of the study were met. A reflection account of the research journey concludes the thesis.

The legacy of duo-pianists Bill and Pat Medley

Whipple, William Perry, III 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this D.M.A. Essay is to highlight the legacy of duo-pianists, Bill and Pat Medley. To that end, this essay will explore: (a) the early biographical information of the Medleys (developing their musical talents in the Depression and World War II Era), (b) the Medleys' concert touring career, including a section on the logistics of travelling with their own concert grand pianos across the United States and Canada, (c) the Medleys' teaching career which included both secondary and pre-college levels, (d) a collection of comical stories learned through personal interviews with the Medleys that speak to their many years of concertizing, and (e) the Medleys' composing and arranging career, which includes a detailed overview of The Medley Way method book series published by The Hal Leonard Corporation and a detailed review and analysis of twenty-two of their educational solos, which were published by the Alfred Music Company, The FJH Music Company, and The Willis Music Company. Bill Medley stated, "As I look back on our lives and the past sixty years, I see two teenagers striking out on a journey that would take them to unfathomable destinations. It would not be done alone, by any means, but with the help of many, many people..." It is my hope that this essay will shed light on a career that has endured sixty plus years and counting. The Medleys' touring career allowed small town communities to experience the art of classical music, who otherwise would not have experienced such beauty. The Medleys' teaching career passed along a musical lineage from their teachers, including Pierre Luboshutz and Genia Nemenoff, along with a composing and arranging career that continues to serve as a pedagogical essence of quality to this day.

From violent opposition to creative opportunism: humor-driven positive affect and the Mormon cartoons of Calvin Grondahl and Pat Bagley

Cropper, Lynne Gorton 01 May 2014 (has links)
In 1844, Mormon Church leader Joseph Smith and others acted against disparaging media coverage by destroying the printing press of the Nauvoo Expositor . Today, the Church reacts differently to disparaging media such as purchasing full-page ads in the playbills of the controversial Broadway musical, “The Book of Mormon;” telling viewers now that they have seen the musical, they should read the book, because the book is always better. The ads include an offer for a free Book of Mormon. Clearly something has changed. This paper demonstrates that the Mormon cartoon books of Calvin Grondahl and Pat Bagley, published from 1978 to 1987, had a significant impact on the general membership of the Church and were influential in changing the Church's negative, guarded stance to a more positive, transparent one which is manifest in the Church's recent approach to dealing with disparaging media coverage. These cartoon books had short-term and long-term positive affect on the Church's general membership which served to decrease situational stress while increasing creativity in dealing with this stress. Using the humor models put forth by Eric J. Romero and Anthony Pescosolido in their 2008 study and Christopher Robert and James E. Wilbanks in their 2012 study this paper suggests that the psychologically-safe, humor-supportive environment created by the Mormon cartoons books of Grondahl and Bagley helped the general membership of the Church cope with tension caused by negative media content and facilitated risk-taking behaviors that have led to a creative opportunistic approach to disparaging media. Furthermore, this case study of Mormon humor demonstrates the efficacy of the humor models put forth by Romero, Pescosolido, Robert and Wilbanks and expands their findings by showing that the additional humor events spawned by the initial event are multi-faceted and much more complex than was implied in the studies.

Compression analysis as a tool for technical characterization and classification of pharmaceutical powders

Nordström, Josefina January 2008 (has links)
There are today strong incentives for an increased understanding of material properties and manufacturing processes to facilitate the development of new technologies in the pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this thesis was to suggest methods requiring a low sample amount for characterization of technical properties of powders. Compression analysis was used to evaluate the formulation relevance of some compression equations. Using the mechanics of single granules to estimate powder functionality was part of this work. It was concluded that the formability of granular solids and the plasticity of single granules could be determined with compression analysis by using the Kawakita model for single components and binary mixtures of ductile granules. Further on, the fragmentation propensity of solid particles could be estimated from compression analysis by using the Shapiro equation, enabling indicators of both the fragmentation and the deformation propensity of particles to be derived in one single compression test. The interpretations of the compression parameters were only valid if the influence of particle rearrangement was negligible for the overall compression profile. An index indicating the extent of particle rearrangement was developed and a classification system of powders into groups dependent on the incidence of particle rearrangement was suggested as tools to enable rational interpretations of compression parameters. The application of compression analysis was demonstrated by investigating the relevance of the mechanics of granular solids for their tableting abilities. The plasticity of single gran-ules was suggested to influence both the rate of compactibility and the mode of deformation, and consequently the maximal tablet strength. The degree of granule bed deformation was shown to be a potential in line process indicator to describe the tableting forming ability. This thesis contributes to a scheme, suitable in formulation work and process control, to describe manufacturability of powders for an enhanced tablet formulation technology.

Design and Application of Software Sensors in Batch and Fed-batch Cultivations during Recombinant Protein Expression in Escherichia coli

Warth, Benedikt January 2008 (has links)
Software sensors are a potent tool to improve biotechnological real time process monitoring and control. In the current project, algorithms for six partly novel, software sensors were established and tested in a microbial reactor system. Eight batch and two fed-batch runs were carried out with a recombinant Escherichia coli to investigate the suitability of the different software sensor models in diverse cultivation stages. Special respect was given to effects on the sensors after recombinant protein expression was initiated by addition of an inducer molecule. It was an objective to figure out influences of excessive recombinant protein expression on the software sensor signals. Two of the developed algorithms calculated the biomass on-line and estimated furthermore, the specific growth rate by integration of the biomass changes with the time. The principle of the first was the application of a near infrared probe to obtain on-line readings of the optical density. The other algorithm was founded on the titration of ammonia as only available nitrogen source. The other two sensors analyzed for the specific consumption of glucose and the specific production of acetate and are predicted on an in-line HPLC system. The results showed that all software sensors worked as expected and are rather powerful to estimate important state parameters in real time. In some stages, restrictions may occur due to different limitation affects in the models or the physiology of the culture. However, the results were very convincing and suggested the development of further and more advanced software sensor models in the future.

Varieties of Fundamentalism

De Sousa, Rebecca M. 04 January 2007 (has links)
The term “Fundamentalism” used as a comparative category within the academic study of religion has become problematic. Fundamentalism, is not one comprehensive movement but is, in fact, a phenomenon which encompasses a variety of beliefs, practices, and expectations. This thesis will explore the diversity of several different and distinct fundamentalist movements. I will discuss the natures of four Christian movements that have been labeled “fundamentalist” – Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Reconstructionists, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson – on several key points, eschatology, political philosophy, as well as level of social involvement. I will then turn to fundamentalism as it is used as a category to describe a global phenomenon. I will discuss three different scholarly approaches by turning to the work of Bruce Lawrence, Mark Juergensmeyer, and Bruce Lincoln on the Islamic “fundamentalist” group al- Qaeda. Finally I will argue that the category “fundamentalism” can be best understood in terms of a family resemblance.

March's Gendered Madness: An Analysis of Print Media Representations of a Female Division I NCAA Women's Basketball Coach - Pat Summitt

Allen, Cindy Marie 12 June 2006 (has links)
This study explores the extent to which national newspaper coverage of a successful female coach reflects the broader gender ideology of society. This study looks specifically at the New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today's coverage of six Women's Division I national basketball tournaments in which Pat Summitt coached the University of Tennessee in the championship game. The years included for this analysis are 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2004. This rhetorical analysis examines this print coverage to determine if, consistent with previous research on media coverage of the female athlete, Summitt's traditional gender role is privileged over her coaching role. The results suggest that Summitt is characterized in ways that marginalize and trivialize her coaching acomplishments. The findings also suggest that even as women succeed in the male-dominated world of sport, societal pressures require that they be presented as properly gendered heterosexual females.
