Does the Stria Terminalis Carry Information Concerning Feeding and Body Weight Regulation from the Posterodorsal Amygdala to the Hypothalamus?

Rollins, Bethany Layla 10 August 2005 (has links)
Previous research has demonstrated body weight gain in rats after lesions to the posterodorsal amygdala. Likewise, a recent study also found increased body weight as a result of knife-cuts of the stria terminalis, just as it exits the amygdala. In the present study, these findings were extended and previous studies replicated by producing 1) lesions in the stria terminalis as it travels dorsally through the brain, 2) coronal knife-cuts anterior to the ventromedial hypothalamus, and 3) axon-sparing lesions of the posterodorsal amygdala using ibotenic acid. Both lesions of the dorsal stria terminalis and coronal knife-cuts anterior to the ventromedial hypothalamus resulted in significant weight gain in female rats as compared to controls. The failure of previous research to find effects after these treatments is attributed to the use of male animals. In addition, examination of anterograde degeneration using an amino-cupric-silver stain in two rats with knife-cuts revealed degenerating terminals in the shell of the VMH and the premammillary nuclei, indicating that the dorsal component of the stria terminalis had been severed. The results of ibotenic acid lesions of the posterodorsal amygdala are unable to be reported due to the inability to histologically verify the lesions. This may have been cause by acid seepage into the lateral ventricles. While the amygdala can not be confirmed as the origin of information concerning body weight regulation and food intake, the stria terminalis does seem to carry this information, exerting an inhibitory influence on the ventromedial hypothalamus.

Inheritance of Pisatin Demethylase in the Fusaria

Milani, Nicholas Anthony January 2010 (has links)
Upon recognition of the pathogen, plants initiate defense responses that can include the production of antimicrobial compounds such as phytoalexins. Nectria haematococca mating population VI (MPVI) is a filamentous ascomycete that contains a cluster of genes known as the pea pathogenicity (PEP) cluster in which the pisatin demethylase (PDA) gene resides. PDA is responsible for the detoxification of the phytoalexin, pisatin, produced by the pea plant (Pisum sativum). Thus, PDA allows the fungus to colonize and become a pea pathogen. It has been proposed that the evolutionary origin of PDA and the PEP cluster is explained by a horizontal gene transfer (HGT) event. The observations supporting this hypothesis include the location of the PEP cluster on a conditionally dispensable (CD) chromosome, the phylogenetically discontinuous distribution of the cluster among closely related species, and bias in GC content and codon usage. This study used a three-pronged approach to test the hypothesis that PDA and the PEP cluster were inherited via HGT. Percent identities of conserved genes, along with GC content analysis and phylogenetics support vertical inheritance.

Investigating the Applicability of Information Foraging Theory to Mobile Web Browsing

Lambros, Stelios 27 June 2005 (has links)
Major research studies have provided support for information scent based usability evaluation and have increased its parent theory's (Information Foraging theory) credibility in the HCI community. These studies have, directly and indirectly, found significant correlations between good information scent and good usability. We would like to investigate its application to less-studied platforms, such as web pages on PDAs and cell phones. The theory itself is not device specific and it implicitly assumes that information scent's importance is universal. However, all studies on the practical application of Information Foraging theory have been conducted with desktop computers. We would like to examine what role information scent plays in interfaces on mobile devices that are limited in usable screen space. For this project, we performed a controlled study with 28 participants on the BBC News web site and its PDA-optimized version. Various usability and information scent related indicators were measured and compared across devices. Contrary to our expectations, we did not find any statistically significant differences between the information scent indicators of the Desktop and PDA sessions and the paths across the devices were highly correlated. / Master of Science

Protein Contact Prediction Based on Protein Sequences

Lin, Dong-Jian 06 September 2011 (has links)
The biological function of a protein is mainly maintained by its three-dimensional structure. Protein folds support the three-dimensional structure of a protein, and then the inter-residue contacts in the protein impact the formation of protein folds and the stability of its protein structure. Therefore, the protein contact plays a critical role in building protein structures and analyzing biological functions. In this thesis, we propose a methodology to predict the residue-residue contacts of a target protein and develop a new measurement to evaluate the accuracy of prediction. With three prediction tools, the support vector machine (SVM), the k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN), and the penalized discriminant analysis (PDA), we compare these classifiers based on the self-testing of the training set, which are derived from representative protein chains from PDB (PDB-REPRDB), and apply the best (SVM) to predict a testing set of 173 protein chains derived from previous study. The experimental results show that the accuracy of our prediction achieves 24.84%,15.68%, and 8.23% for three categories of different contacts, which greatly improves the result of random exploration (5.31%, 3.33%, and 1.12%, respectively).

Ad-Hoc Sharing for Palm Devices

Perez Priego, Juan Gabriel 20 May 2005 (has links)
The current generation of Palm PDA devices is designed to share information records primarily with a base desktop system, or a server. Therefore, their built- in features for sharing data during ad-hoc collaboration among groups of mobile users are inadequate. In this thesis, we describe a new framework that addresses this problem by allowing users to transparently share the record databases of common applications during spontaneous collaborative sessions. The framework also allows users to define custom sharing policies for each application/user pair. These policies determine the manner in which records are exchanged and update, thereby automating the process of handling conflicts and preserving user privacy preferences. We also present implementation results, in which we have used the framework to create shared versions of common applications, such as Calendar and Memo. Our experimental results show that the programming effort involved is minimal and the user interaction with the application is, essentially, the same as in the original application.

GPS jutiklio naudojimo sportininko treniruotėje tyrimas / Research on using GPS receiver in sports workout

Peleckis, Romas 02 June 2006 (has links)
GPS technologies are more and more useful in sports today. Trainers can view athletic workout. There are many types of equipment that show how fast does sportsman move. So it’s very important to know if their parameters are enough accurate. That’s why these data must be analyzed. The main object about viewing athlete’s results is to get distance and moving speed. These two parameters can be shown from GPS data. To get distance from GPS parameters we need to use mathematical methods and carry out tests in various places. GPS speed parameter must be checked with standard and accurate device. This will be done with real bicycle speed. The analysis of athletic training methods must be also made.

Servicios Web en Dispositivos Móviles para el Soporte de Aplicaciones Colaborativas

Carrasco Hidalgo, Víctor Danilo January 2007 (has links)
