Analyzing and developing precise pointing analysis tool to reduce image distortion in Earth Observation satellites

With growing space market and entry of more private companies into the industry, there arecompanies and stakeholders who would like to have a high order of accuracy mission outputrequirements. These requirements vary from mission to mission. This simply means that if acompany wants an Earth observation mission, the main requirement to be fulfilled would be tohave the highest resolution of image possible. In order to achieve this, the satellite carrying the camera payload would be required to bepointed in the right direction with utmost accuracy. For a satellite to be pointed in the rightdirection, the noise generated by the sensors and actuators on-board, which determines theattitude of the satellite and helps in changing it, should be minimized. The aim of this thesisis to design a method which could help in determining the right components to be procuredso that the pointing requirements of the satellite are fulfilled. This objective is achieved bydesigning algorithms in python and MATLAB. The values generated by these algorithms, ultimately describe the type of sensor or actuator to be procured. Finally, the noise generated bysuch individual components act as pointing error source and then PEET is used to translatethese error sources to platform error, to generate a pointing budget and ensure that all pointingrequirements are satisfied.

The effects of peer tutoring on first-grade middle school students' English reading achievement and self-esteem in China

Traditional foreign language teaching pedagogy, such as the grammar-translation and audio-lingual methods, dominate most English language classrooms in China. Those methods provide a good deal of target language input but do not foster a student-centered learning environment. This study examined the effects of a peer tutoring intervention grounded in constructivist learning theory on the English reading achievement and self-esteem of first-grade Chinese middle school students who are accustomed to traditional pedagogy grounded in teacher-centered instruction and behaviorist learning theory. The modified Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory - School Form (CSEI-SF) was used to measure students’ self-esteem. The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests for Flyers (YLE Flyers) was used to assess students' English reading achievement. Eighty-five students who participated in this study were first-grade students in a township middle school (equal to 7th grade students in the United States), with 42 students in the control and 43 students in the experimental condition. No statistical significance was found regarding the impact of this peer tutoring intervention on students’ English reading and self-esteem. Also there was no statistical significance with relation to the moderating effects of students’ initial English reading and self-esteem on this impact. This study revealed that constructivist learning strategies were not as effective in China as they were reported to be in other international settings.

Repositioning the problematic gender formation of a generation of white South African men through performance art

An overview of global statistics on violence, country to country and worldwide, indicates that men are the main perpetrators of violence in our societies. Furthermore, the behavioural traits of risk-taking and self-harm are also associated with men. It is my contention that the formative processes involved in gender identity are at the root of these dysfunctions. In an attempt to present a positive alternative, I focus on a group I name the X- Men: white South African Generation X males. Drawing on Judith Butler‟s theory of performativity and its allowance for agency and resistance, I argue that they are not necessarily trapped by how their gender identities were formed through Apartheid‟s gendered institutions. These included schools, sport and the military. I posit that within the institution of art, self-aware artists may present visual representations of resistance and transformation. Acknowledging art as signifying text, the X-Men situate signs differently in an effort to accomplish a social and intersubjective raising-of-awareness. Additionally, this new identity and its associated positive performance have the potential to undermine certain stereotypical perceptions harboured by the broader society as a result of problematic behaviour associated with men. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.V.A.
